" I missed your text wishing me a happy birthday. Did you think I stopped reading them?" -Gilda
Crap.
He did not forget her birthday - he had drilled that date on the inside of his skull (theoretically) as one of the most important dates there were, right next to their anniversary.
He was a man who cared about these things.
He did, however, fumble the ball when it came to technology. It wasn't exactly a secret - he had a flip phone, and before that, a pager. He wasn't stupid, he just didn't hold his technical skills in very high regard.
So he forgot his phone was there sometimes.
He checked his pocket for the damn thing. It was there after all, blinking up at him.
Darn, and double darn.
"I hope you'll forgive me for not checking that thing. I had a very good reason to be busy, though, I promise."
In old TV shows, it kind of looks like this. He comes home to his wife at the end of the day, does his best to kiss her hello and goodbye and goodnight, if he can - they're a regular couple of loved-up newlywed love birds, and Harvey is happy with that.
After all, his job is soul-crushing. He loves it, and it loves him, so he appreciates being able to lean on the woman he loves.
He had the window rolled down in his car, which was a little unusual, but for good reason. He was grinning as he popped open the door and took out a soft sort of - duffel bag with mesh sides, and the critter inside eagerly pawed at the top where Harvey carefully unzipped it.
Out plopped a little spotted puppy. Old enough to be away from Mom with no problems, and medically sound, but definitely a puppy - with big ears, big paws, and a perpetually waggling tail.
"Someone a few blocks over had an unexpected delivery - so she's -" already in love with Harvey, popping up to tackle his leather shoe "-an adoptee. No name yet, and no idea what breed she is, but... I thought our house could use a little more life in it."
While they were working on having that baby. When did it get to be like this? It was supposed to be easier than --- it wasn't for lack of trying, for God's sake!
There were alternatives, wonderful alternatives, but now it was a matter of not being able to -
It didn't matter right now. Especially since she - the dog, not his wife - was jovially peeing on his leg.
"The car ride must've been just a little too long, huh?"
They were going to have to invest in more cleaning supplies. And a collar. And ---
gosh i realize that i wasn’t following you so i had to fix that but i want to see the puppy 🥺.
