Star Boy Productions @ The Purcell Room (Southbank Centre) Review
That feeling of getting over the towering walls of the British border, of arriving to that mystical place everyone back home talks and dreams about and entering the strange new world of tea breaks, advanced public transport systems and a functional minimum wage; it’s amazing.

MUSIC: AMAZING RADIO & SOUTHBANK CENTRE PRESENTS
On Tuesday evening, Amazing Radio’s Ruth Barnes presented three of her favourite up-and-coming musicians at the Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room – and I (via Hoxton Radio) was lucky enough to grab a couple of seats!
First up (and appropriately so, considering it was St Patrick’s Day) was Dublin’s Patrick O’Laoghaire – aka I Have A Tribe. I knew his track Yellow Raincoats (also the title of his 2014 EP) and that he’d toured Europe with Anna Calvi, and was intrigued to hear more of his ‘folk-tinged melancholia’. He began with a couple of songs on guitar (chords and voice reminiscent of Jeff Buckley), and then settled at the piano for the remainder of his set. Touring with Irish band Slow Skies apparently gave Patrick the encouragement to go solo and start I Have A Tribe, and on Tuesday he certainly seemed confident – incredible voice, beautiful music, and (almost too) honest lyrics.
After a short beer interval, Madam (aka Sukie Smith) took to the stage for a bit of witch folk. Compared by The Independent to PJ Harvey, Portishead and the Velvet Underground, I was reminded more of Mazzy Star during the set, and enjoyed the use of a saw in one of the songs. Sukie played Rachel Branning in Eastenders, and clearly had a lot of fans in the audience – the man next to me, for starters.
Headlining the night was Hannah Lou Clark – a staple favourite of my Hoxton Radio show (and the reason, alongside Ruth Barnes, that I wanted to go to the event). Hannah was accompanied by her sister and band (including a Connan Mockasin lookalike on drums). I was most looking forward to the song Kids In Heat (“we’re just kids in heat, wait until we find our feet”), but actually, the song I enjoyed most was Silent Type – SO good! It kicks off with just a drum machine, and slowly builds – very satisfying to hear live. Hannah was definitely my favourite act of the night – she’s only released an EP so far (Silent Type), but based on how good that is, as well as Tuesday’s performance, I think her debut album will be very good indeed.

Meow Meow ‘s Apocalypse Meow: A Crisis is Born – and much of its audience – was as camp as a mass of pink tulle. The audience, bubbling with gentle, knowing anticipation, greeted each other with kisses and “dahlings” all over the theatre.
