Harry jumps when someone slides down next to him and puts their hand in his. For a moment, he expects for it to be Hermione, but this hand is smaller — softer. Hermione’s is littered with roughness from where she clutches her wand and her thumb and pointer are calloused from turning pages. This hand seems as though it’s never lifted a finger before and it’s that thought that causes Harry to think Pureblood before he looks up and sees her face.

Daphne Greengrass is holding his hand, sitting next to him and whispering soothing words as though this were an everyday occurrence. Harry must not on his game and his guard is definitely down because he doesn’t realize what is happening until she’s kissing his palm. It’s almost as though her lips break him from his stupor because his eyebrows knit into a half-hearted glare and he pulls his hand out of her grasp.

      His fingers turn cold.

               “You can’t fix it. It is over — over. That’s what they say. Haven’t you heard?”
