Please introduce yourself and your work to those who might not know who you are yet! Hi folks! My name is Joanna, an illustrator and comic artist from Poland, currently freelancing her way through life. My works tend to be weird and colorful, you may have seen them circulating on Tumblr. Why did you decide to post your artwork on Tumblr? There was a time when artists from Deviantart were migrating here one by one, I got interested… and ended with my own art account. It’s a nice way to keep an eye on what other artists do and - probably most of all - to get a handful of everyday inspiration.
Do you have any particular artists who inspire you? Oh man, too many!! To name a few: Brendan McCarthy, Suehiro Maruo, Takato Yamamoto, Moebius, Philipe Druillet, Jakub Rebelka, Antonio Lopez, Bob Peak, Hanuka brothers, Quay brothers… and some people you may know from tumblr: Angie Wang, Uno Moralez… there are a lot more, though. Amazing creators!
When did you start to create art? At a very very young age. You should have seen those kickass dragons and peculiar hybrids created back then!
Has your style changed a lot as the years go by? If yes please tell us how Sure, that’s a process every artist experience - the style’s always in motion. It’s hard to tell how it changed… I guess there was a time I was really anime-driven, trying to imitate favourite creators style - it was in mid/high school. But since it was art-profile school I also learned the basics of painting, drawing, sculpting etc. This came with studying art history. It naturally had some effect on my art style as well. After high school I continued my education as a graphic art student… All of it got me interested in various visual issues, but the thing is, the comic style wasn’t welcomed by the teachers, neither in the school, nor in the Academy. You know, the old school, traditional way of teaching… So the works you see now are a result of the years of traditional practice and more comic art style I kept drawing and developing for myself throughout these years.
And last but not least.. Who did you want to become when you were little? Did you dream of the life as an artist or did you want to become an astronaut? Well… at first, an archeologist, I guess? I decided to be a comic artist around age 9 or 10. I only had a little change of mind around high school when I decided that designing clothes was more fun, but it got stuck in my head only for year and a half. I got back to my original idea, because drawing is the only thing that I have been working on for so many years and the only one that makes me truly happy.
