Since we're now at the bit in Dracula where Renfield has made his way to Purfleet chapel (a real-life place), I thought I'd show you folks what it looks like today. Dracula's house, Carfax, is gone, but the chapel is still (barely) standing:

There is currently a proposal going through planning permission to tear the place down and build a housing estate there, but it seems to be stuck in development hell at the moment, partly due to the archaeogical interest of the site.

On Thursday, I took the train to Purfleet and walked along the Thames past Rainham Marshes to Rainhaim. The wetlands feature in my latest fic, A Thing With Peas. The third and final chapter is in the works.

Hellsing Manor Location

Upon doing some research, I found this really cool Reddit thread that goes into great detail about where the Hellsing Manor would theoretically be located in the real world. Figured you guys might be interested.

Synopsis

The manor is located in Finchley

Closer to both Westminster and London with easy access to the M1 and M25 motorways and “reasonably quick access to several other motorways (the M3, M4, M40, M11)”

“Finchley was from 1904 to 2007 home of Inglis Barracks, a substantial military installation that was also once the base for the Middlesex Regiment.”

There is a mansion in Finchley that is right across the road from the Inglis Barracks

The mansion is called “The Nether Court” (I can’t make this up)

“It is also located just five miles up the road from Hampstead, in the rough vicinity where Dracula's victim Lucy Westenra lived, died, and later preyed on young children in her unlife.”

Purfleet

Dracula is now out in the countryside, but within a relatively short train ride of London. The city was much smaller then; a lot of the suburbs had yet to be built, although the villages that formed their nucleus were definitely there. Purfleet has a nice museum, BTW, with a section dedicated to the vampire.
