How did you become a vampire? Were you born a count or did that come later?
It was but the closing of the eyes to one life and the opening of them to another. It came in one moment and was done.
I became Count when I set myself by the Borgo Pass, because I had need to be known as noble. Voivode Vlad was long dead, and I was not so unwise as to wear a name so known in the land, where even the dogs might remember it. So, for a time, I took such names and titles as served me best. When it was safe to take again the name of Dracula, I took it. But Voivode has long since passed from use, and was no longer fit for a man who must be believed in by the living. Count, though, is a name that still speaks power. It marks me to all as noble, as master, as one of power. Is it not so?
How bad would it be for it to rot in you? Would it only cause extreme pain?
Nothing can cause me extreme pain.
Yet it is unpleasant even to have the feeling of it within me for a little while, and I cannot imagine how intolerable it would be to have it remain there until it should decompose.
