It was much too quiet, Evette kept her guard up as she walked with her sword at her side. Her hand never left the grip not since the sun went down. Patrol was boring when doing it alone but she was on edge. Something was there if it was something undead, she was ready to take it down.
Evette walked down the stairs of her home. She saw her grandmother backing up her bag, preparing for her teaching job at the University. Evette bit her lip and walked up to her.
"Grandma, can I talk to you?" Evette asked quietly. Her grandmother stopped what she was doing and smiled at Evette.
"Of course Baby Girl," she lightly pinched her cheek, "What you need?"
Evette couldn't help but smile at her nickname. She messed with her fingers in front of her looking to the ground, "Well um you know I'm part of the Night Watch and all that. Well Lucian asked me...h-he asked me if I wanted to come live with him," she mumbled.
"Did he now? Well ain't he sweet, that's good. When are you leaving then?" Her grandmother asked sweetly.
Evette shoulder's slumped and she looked at her, "What? You...you aren't going to ask me not to? O-Or anything like that?"
Evette's grandmother tilted her head, "Why would I do that? Baby Girl, you go on move out. You're 17 now I was expecting it to happen sooner of later."
"You don't even sound like you'll miss me. Grandma I don't want to leave you alone here in this big house."
Evette's grandmother shook her head and sighed. She looked into Evette's eyes and put her hands on her shoulders, "Baby Girl, you have to let your grandpa go."
Evette blinked, "Wh-what do you mean? What does this have to do with Grandpa?"
"Everything Baby Girl," she lightly shook her, "You didn't ask anyone to be a summoner. You ran out and you did it. You had no idea about anything with magic but you still managed it. Two years later you're high ranking. Now why?"
Evette shook her head and shrugged.
"Because you did that for you. Baby girl I ain't gonna stand here and tell you what you did," she stood up straight, "You should know."
"Grandma, how does grandpa come into all of this?"
Her grandmother sighed and pointed to the couch, "Right there you were born, in the very seat. Now honey you have lived in this house your whole life. You even got your own room at that Institute and you still come back here. Why?"
"B-Because this is my home grandma. Why wouldn't I come back?"
"Right there, you see right there. That shows me you ain't let him go yet. You don't keep coming back to this house because it's your home. You come back because this is where he lived too," her face grew with concern. "Heaven knows you shouldn't have seen him go out through sufferin' but you did. You should have seen him peaceful and still, but you didn't. I wish that you hadn't. But he is gone now, I know it hurt but you have to move on."
Evette looked down recalling the day in her mind. She exhaled knowing where her grandmother was going.
"Grandma I-
"Don't you give me that, 'I'm sorry' mess. Don't be sorry for lovin' him. That man had the strongest source of love I had ever seen. You're so much like him," she cupped Evette's cheek, "I see it everyday. You grow stronger and smarter each day. Just as fast as he did."
Evette smiled and closed her eyes, her grandmother's words sparked her heart.
"You got to let him go, live your life," she spoke proudly, "You're already doing it. Don't let a ghost stop you from doing the best you can. Understand?"
Evette nodded, "Yes grandma, I understand."
She smiled, "Baby Girl, you go out there protect your city how you want to. This city don't know what it needs. Lucian, he'll teach you though. He needs you too, a lot of people do."
Evette smiled wider and nodded, "You're right grandma."
"This is not a surprise," she chuckled turning Evette around, "Now go and pack your things. Stop worrying about me," she laughed.
"Okay, okay," she was halfway up the stairs when she stopped. Evette ran back down and hugged her grandmother, "Thank you Grandma, I love you."
