This is a multitrack recording of Peruvian musician Tito La Rosa playing two of the Chavín pututus made during an approved archaeoacoustics research session in the Museo Nacional Chavín, September 2008. (Kolar, "The Code of the Conch")
The conch is a marine animal in the mollusk family. They are basically large sea snails. By cutting a hole in the coiled spire of the hollow conch shell, it can be used as a wind instrument called a conch horn or trumpet.
These conch horns were widely used in ancient societies. Not only have ancient conch horns been found at archaeological sites, but they are present in ancient artworks and mythologies. The Greek fish-tailed god Triton used the horn to control the waves of the ocean. The Bhagavad Gita, the ancient Hindu "Song of God", describes battles in which Lord Krishna and Prince Arjuna blew conch shell horns during the charge. Conch shell horns were used by Mayan priests and Tibetan Monks. They were so important in religious ceremony that they were imported by landlocked societies, such as the pre-incan Chavín people, who were seperated from the ocean by the Andean mountains. The Chavín called these horns pututus. (Fagan, Ancient Lives)
A "Sound-Based" Oracle
The Chavín had a subterranean maze-like complex of shrines and water channels where they practiced rituals in which humans were transformed into jaguars. The shaman priests who conducted the rituals used hallucinogenic plants to induce trance, though the trance state was also achieved through the intense acoustic sensations caused by the blowing of multiple conch horns echoing through the stone chambers of the complex, and the dancing light and shadow from the torches.
According to the Stanford Archaeological Acoustics researchers, who recreated the acoustic experience using the shell trumpets found in the complex in their original context, the effect was disorienting and confusing -- the trumpet's drone sounded as if it came from multiple directions simultaneously as it bounced off of the chamber walls, and through the corridors and ventilator shafts. (Fagan, Ancient Lives)
There is even some evidence that the complex was designed with acoustic principles in mind. Read more about this in Miriam Kolar's essay "The Code of the Conch" here: http://nautil.us/issue/6/secret-codes/the-code-of-the-conch.
