#knowyourroots Went to the Sugar Museum to get a glimpse of #familyhistory Overtures of colonialism cast a shadow upon this part of my family, such as the separation of migrant workers into camps to discourage cooperation. My family stayed in Ah Fong, Spanish A, and Spanish B. Despite this separation the various cultures blended together, creating a beautiful sense of community and creating something new. My grandfather worked in the bagasse building in #puunene (at Puunene, Hawaii) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvC-NSYhR-J/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=6nkixkh1kps3
Demi-God Maui ✨ According to legend, days were short in early times and people never had enough daylight to complete their tasks. Without adequate sunlight, crops took longer to grow. When his mother complained about this situation, the demi-god Maui decided to correct it by making the Sun 🌞 called La, slow his journey across the sky. To accomplish this, Maui climbed up Mount Haleakalā 🌋 the house of the sun, with a special net which some say was woven with his grandmothers hair. As La began to rise over the rim of the crater, Maui snared him. The mighty sun struggled desperately in the net and was unable to escape. Finally, he agreed to travel more slowly across the sky for half the year. This is why the Island of Maui (which bears the demi-god’s name has the abundant sunlight necessary for sugarcane cultivation. Some say the islands 🌴 shape references Maui’s head, neck, and, body. #maui #hawaii #magic #travel #learn #beauty #puunene #myths #legends #haleakala #wanderlust #boho #gypsy #grateful #earth (at Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum)

An image of an old rusty broken down fence in the middle of nowhere in an old cane camp on Maui where workers from many countries worked, lived & ate. Brings to mind the debate on "quiet titles" here locally and borders globally.
