Quantic Universe Bible (2011) - Ladybug affiliated characters and teams

The Quantic Universe (the larger universe that Miraculous is a part of) lore bible from 2011 has been uploaded on Artbook Wiki. I skimmed it for details relevant to old Miraculous lore. Being dated January 2011 makes it the oldest leaked lore bible as of December 2025. Thank you to Sand for sharing!

New info (as far as I'm aware):

Felix in this bible is referred to as Felix Richard. Also of note is that Richard Sphinx (in the Korean artbook) is named Sylvain Sphinx here.

The criminal organisation that le Papillon (Richard/Sylvain Sphinx) runs is called La Pègre, literally "the (criminal) underworld". In the Korean artbook, it was transliterated as "Perg", making the original name unclear.

The Buggets are known as les Bestioles in French, (referring to insects and bugs), and were a team of Ladybug + three girls who had also received bug-themed jewels and followed her lead. Ladybug is considered their leader. Killer Bee and Dragonfly (who in this lore bible is called Libellule, the French word for the Ordonata order) remained, but Fourmi Noire (Black Ant) was eventually replaced by Green Hopper, a grasshopper heroine.

There is an extensive lore with the US government about the Ladybug and Cat jewels that ties into the wider Quantic Universe, I'm not gonna dive into it just yet, beyond addressing that the "previous Ladybug fell in love with the Black Cat holder" thing dates back to this continuity. They escaped to France together, removing the jewels from the hands of the US government, who had initially gained them in exchange for financially support to Mao Zedong after the famine of the Great Leap Forward.

(If that sentence made you raise your eyebrows, this is basically what the entire first half of the document feels like. It ties in greatly with a lot of real world history.)

There's also some fun references to concepts that were later used as akumas!

(Also I consider myself fluent but haven't used French in a while and I'm not a native speaker, please let me know if I screwed up somewhere. I did this in like two hours lol.)

Ladybug (Marinette C.)

(Note: no full last name given, unlike other characters)

She is a high schooler who has the earrings of the Ladybug, which grants good luck with the condition that she uses them altruistically. Due to having the earrings, which are the most powerful artefacts in the Quantic universe, she is also the most powerful character in the entire Quantic Universe. The two earrings are also given the names 运 and 气 (the Chinese characters that together mean "luck", among other symbolic things).

Due to the 5th Law of the Quantic Universe, should she use her luck powers selfishly, it will eventually turn catastrophic due to taking chances away from others. On the other hand, if she uses her powers altruistically, it will benefit everyone. She has no control over her powers and she never knows when they'll activate or how. The power always activates in an unexpected way, so she can completely fail at something on the surface but cause a domino effect that ends up helping her.

Her luck powers will also activate on a direct threat to her life, allowing her a better survival instinct, like a sixth sense for noticing dangerous routes while crossing rooftops, or easily dodging attacks from enemies. Physically, she suffers higher stress levels and a burning sensation that intensifies with the level of danger. Her reflexes and sense of balance, already sharpened by daily gymnastics training, are considerably improved. She also has a solid foundation in kung fu as taught by her uncle.

Chat Noir (Felix Richard)

He is a high schooler who has the ring of the Black Cat, which grants bad luck to anyone the holder touches. He cannot remove the ring from his hand and looks for a way to remove his curse.

Le Papillon (Sylvain Sphinx)

(Note: As stated above, he is called 'Richard Sphinx' in the Korean artbook instead.)

A mutant who is the boss and leader of "la Pègre" (lit. "the (criminal) underworld"), based in Paris, France. His power allows him to calculate all the probabilities that can occur from a given event. These probabilities take the form of colourful branches of light that grow from his shoulders to draw the wings of a butterfly.

His sense of strategy is unparalleled and he is a formidable fighter, capable of predicting his opponent's movements. He's undefeated in games of chess or poker. He never allows his emotions to show. When he does, it's only to manipulate his enemy. He is invulnerable to mental manipulation. It's impossible to tell if he's lying or not. Seductive, calm, and determined, le Papillon will not let anything get in his way.

La Pègre

A criminal organisation run by Le Papillon, with his lieutenants Belote, Rebelote, and Dix de Der. On occasion recruits other supervillains for missions. It works to unify all the mafias in the world: the Triads, Mafia, Yakuza, etc.

(Note: The names of the lieutenants Belote, Rebelote, and Dix de der, are references to the card game "belote", of which there is a French variant. These lieutenant characters have never appeared elsewhere to my knowledge.)

Members:

Belote & Rebelote: Twin brothers and le Papillon's lieutenants. They are effectively the same person in two bodies simultaneously.

Dix de der: A telepathic mutant capable of mind reading. She loves having the last word. One of le Papillon's lieutenants.

Le Mime: A mutant whose civilian identity is Jacques Haprèle, father of Mylene Haprèle. Occasional member of Pègre. He is a mime so skilled that he is capable of reproducing the effects of what he mimes. The illusion remains as long as he is silent. It is effectively a vow of silence.

Monsieur Pigeon: Civilian name Xavier Ramier. A were-pigeon who wants Paris to belong to the pigeons. He is capable of communicating with birds. He is armed with a gun that contains concentrated bird excrement capable of dissolving even metal. He is a member of The Vermins, a French-based team composed of were-type villains. (Note: he is not listed as a member of la Pègre in this bible, but he is a part of le Papillon's villain lineup in other materials like the Korean artbook, where the thing about weaponising bird excrement remains but his power set is linked to a kwami instead.)

Notable reused concepts:

Befena (la Befana): Civilian identity Epifania Calzino, based in Rome, Italy. Creates candies that grant side effects or temporary superpowers, cease when digested.

Les Bestioles (the Buggets, as in they're all based on bugs): Three other girls who were given magical jewels and have decided to follow Ladybug. Together the team composes of Ladybug, Killer Bee (granted the artifact jewel of the bee, who also operates in the United States as part of the Heroes of the Ghetto team), Libellule (granted the artifact jewel of the odonata (of which includes dragonflies)), and Fourmi Noire (granted the artifact jewel of the ant). Killer Bee and Libellule are also shown in the Buggets concept artwork, with Libellule named Dragonfly. Fourmi Noire does not appear in the concept artwork and is instead replaced by Green Hopper, a grasshopper based heroine.

Oni-chan: Based in Tokyo, Japan. Holds a mask effigy of a Japanese oni, which grants superhuman power and agility. Also specialises in the katana.

Several New York heroes (Knightmare (Knightowl), Uncanny Valley, etc.), including those featured in the 2018 comics (Ghetto Blaster etc.). Gavroche is also here but I'm not familiar with his lore.

Do you think you would be dissecting the show had the writers went with the original premise ( the anime ) with Felix and Marinette as the main characters? I’ve been seeing some *discussions* on TikTok , with a preference to the nonexistent original concept . Many argue that Felix would make for a more compelling deuteragonist . thoughts ? ( and prayers . I can’t overstate my excitement for your upcoming fanfic )

Well, I can't say anything for whether I would be dissecting the show, since it was this specific clusterfuck that hooked me back into the show. But I'm sure the show would still be a clusterfuck.

Something that every discussion on whether the pv premise or the canon premise is better misses, is that ideas are worth fuckall in writing. It's the execution that matters.

There's actually a very funny anecdote by Jim Butcher (of Dresden Files fame) about exactly this topic. He got into an internet argument with someone who claimed that no matter how bad your writing is, a good idea could still carry it. Jim Butcher argued that with the right execution any idea could be made good, and he challanged to commenter to give him not one, but two bad ideas for him to write. He got "lost roman legion" and "pokemon" and that's how Codex Alera was born.

That pretty much reflects my thoughts on the matter. The quality of the premise matter little compared to the skill of the writers. So unless the show would've gotten different writers, the show would've still had massive fumbles to it.

The only reason people like the pv version better is that it's non-existent and so they can compare the version they came up with in their head to the show. Obviously their own version will always win in such a comparision.

That being said, if we go on idea alone, I disagree that Felix would be a stronger character than Adrien.

Adrien is already a very strong character in his concept. He has very compelling conflict baked into his premise (supervillain father vs superhero son) as well as inbuilt character arc and theme (forced to be perfect as a civilian + hero of destruction = character arc about breaking free by destroying the perfection imposed on him).

The duality of Perfect Adrien Agreste and Goofball Chat Noir also give instant depth and complexity to his character in a way that contributes to the inherent conflict, character arc and themes attached to him. He's a character that gives a lot to work with from conception.

Felix, by comparision, doesn't have as much going for him. He has an inherent conflict against Ladybug (-ish, it's kinda a weak conflict unless they explain why he simply can't ask for a kiss to break the curse. Like maybe he has to make Ladybug fall in love with him.) and in general his personality can generate a lot of good conflict in an episodic format. He also has a built-in character arc in the form of going from a jerk to a better person.

However, he's missing specificity in his character arc, inherent themes or the instant complexity Adrien has. He's not a bad character at all, but his concept isn't as strong as Adrien's.

The only thing he has over Adrien is that he has an active goal he would be working towards from the get go. Giving the characters goals they're working towards is really an underrated part in making them compelling.

Honestly, this entire discussion would make much more sense for Marinette rather than Adrien.

Brigitte is an infinitely better protagonist than Marinette. Her grandfather is the guardian, giving her an inherent connection to the plot. She's in fact the one who sets the plot in motion and everything after is her cleaning up the mess she created (a la Cardcaptor Sakura). Felix's motivation centers on her without making his character revolve around her. She's the main character here, unlike Marinette.

You can still write with her all the normal teenage life elements that they do with Marinette. But you could also write her chosen one elements without forcing them in.

If the discussion was really about which version of the character was better, then there's much more to say about Marinette being replaced rather than Adrien. But I suspect a lot of the discussion originates in people simply not liking Adrien's character and wanting to see him replaced.

Astruc said that PV Félix would cause "bad chemistry" with Marinette, but when you sit down to think about it, she has way more of a reason to obsess over him than she does canon Adrien. He wears a cursed ring that attracts disaster... and she doesn't even need a curse for disaster to find her. Marinette would definitely see PV Félix as a kindred spirit, especially at the point she was at in Origins.
