There's something about old webcomics from the late 90s/early 2000s either going through major art style changes or barely improving their art style at all, especially when the webcomic has the same cartoonist since the beginning of the webcomic's lifespan.

I have a few examples of what I'm talking about:

First, we have Penny Arcade. This webcomic and its art styles have all been created and used by the same cartoonist, Mike Krahulik. No different cartoonist, no different artist-ANYTHING, just the same guy. Here are a few examples of the webcomic's art style changing throughout the years

Now, I'm aware that a lot of people don't really like the modern PA art style. Still, if they really paid attention to the evolution of Krahulik's art style in these comics, then people should've been aware that it's gonna get more exaggerated as the years go on lmfao.

Here's another webcomic that also experienced major art style changes: PvP.

Now, although the art style of PvP didn't change a lot (and drastically) like Penny Arcade, there might be someone out there who isn't familiar with this webcomic who probably thought the comic had changed cartoonists or something, but nope! Both images above are drawn by the same guy, Scott Kurtz.

Now that I'm done talking about those 2 webcomics, I wanna talk about webcomics that went through little to no art style changes at all.

I think the prime example of a webcomic not going through any art style changes definitely has to be Sluggy Freelance.

It surprises me to see how this comic, during its 28-year run, has not gone through any art style changes at all. I mean, hell, Pete Abrams still uses the Comic Sans font to this day. For a comic that used to be uploaded to its website daily, you'd think Abrams would be more experimental and do something different since he had the privilege to draw comics every day, but no. Listen, I may sound a bit aggressive over this, but I'm actually not. I love Sluggy Freelance and its art just the way it is, but because of how stagnant the art has been while the comic is about to turn 30 years old in a few years, it definitely makes you question things about what Abrams was doing throughout those years.

And finally, I'll mention MegaTokyo. I'm not really into this webcomic and I have no intentions of reading it anytime soon, but when it comes to its art style, I definitely wanna say something about it at least.

Okay, so yes, there's definitely a lot of improvement here when it comes to this webcomic, but at the same time, the current art style still gives off those "drawings that look like a 12-year-old weeb drew" vibes. While the artist (and creator,) Fred Gallagher, can go off on panels like these

Damn, can you imagine that this comic first started out as 2 dudes trying to get into an E3 event.

There are still a lot of issues with his art style to this day, like the iffy facial anatomy or the fact that he never inks his comics (which can leave a few pages to be very messy, chaotic, and incoherent, especially when it's unintentional.) I really hope Gallagher drops the 2000s anime art style because I feel like that's what's holding him back from actually making his art look good. While, yes, the 2000s anime art style is what gave this webcomic its identity... It's not 2000 anymore.
