NEW SPREADSHEETS ARE UP

hello PWHL fans, I return with my penalty spreadsheets, updated for Season 3. If you want more, I will keep these updated and continue adding data/visualizations to them on my website, which is here.

As of the end of the Sirens Frost game this afternoon, here's some fun data:

The rivalry heat map again showing that Sirens/Victoire is not just in my mind but also on the ice, although this is surely influenced by all of those game misconducts handed out for the fight in DC. (This is showing number of penalties in each matchup). Sirens remain the most penalized team with 52 penalties on the season, but also the most fouled against team, with 61 penalties taken against us.

I've classified each penalty according to their type in the rulebook (more info on the website), and here's a breakdown of penalty types by team. Restraining infractions remain the most common, followed by physical infractions.

If you're curious about the way this breaks down as far as severity goes- minors are 2min pens, majors are 5min pens, misconduct is anything more than 10mins. Minors obvs most common, those misconducts are coming primarily from that fight again I believe.

Here are your top ten most penalized players, both by number of penalties and number of PIMs. No comment.

If you're curious what the top 5 most common penalties in the league are, I can help! Minnesota loves tripping, Ottawa hooking, Toronto interference, Montreal roughing, and Ottawa and Toronto tie for the lead in holding.

Last but not least, we see a relatively even split as far as proportions of penalties taken- Minnesota, Boston, and Vancouver are the goody two shoes of the league, while New York, Ottawa, and Toronto take the Problem Child end of the spectrum.

after making a couple different posts about the clair/claire/clara nexus and the preponderance of jess- names, and after @pwhl-mybeloved acted as the green goblin mask, i made a big ol spreadsheet to analyze the names in the finalized rosters of the pwhl!

of the 206 players, the most common name overall was Anna with 6 (Meixner, Segedi, Kjellbin, Wilgren, Shokhina, Bargman)

when combining spellings of a name that are pronounced the same, the Annas still rule the pack! but with 5 uses, we have Sarah/Sara, Clair/Claire, Hannah/Hanna, and Abbey/Abby

lumping together names of the same origin, the winner is....Anna! And her shared-origin names Anne (cherkowski), Ann (as in ann-renée desbiens and kelly-ann nadeau), Aneta (tejralova), Hannah (Miller, Bilka, Brandt, Murphy), and Hanna (Baskin). that is 15 if you don't wish to count! in a distant second place is catherine/katherine/kaitlin/kaitlyn/kati/katy/katie/katerina which has 8 uses with no repeated variations

128 of the 155 unique names were used only once. the team with the most single-case spellings is a tie between boston and ottawa, with 17 each. but!!! if we look at pronunciation, things change. this was my "if i say the first name out loud, is there more than one active player who i could be talking about" test. ottawa remains a special snowflake, but seattle joins them with 14 unique pronunciations.

my beloved toronto sceptres lost this category by both spelling and pronunciation- 13 unique spellings and only 7 unique pronunciations. thank you allie, blayre, daryl, elaine, kiara, raygan, and renata for putting in the effort

happy game day! before boston and montreal command all our attention with chaos, here's some more pwhl name facts! under a cut so as not to infodump to the unwilling

today is about Categories and requires three caveats: first, names do not have genders they have gender associations. statistics are greatly limited by a binary sex categorization system. second, because canada did not start publishing aggregated national data on names until recently (it was by province), all these stats are taken from the US social security administration data. variation may occur. third, this was strictly a one-for-one search and i didn't account for the very real factors like "alex carpenter is an alexandra and probably a lot of her ten thousand peers of 1994 also go by alex" so once again, perceptions might be skewed.

first, we have Boy Names On Girls: names that were given to far more boys than girls in the year the athlete was born.

jesse compher (1999) was one of 305 girl jesses to 5,004 boy jesses.

daryl watts (1998) had 292 boy daryls alongside but for girls daryl ranked below the top 1000 names.

micah zandee-hart (1997) was one of 369 girl micahs and 1570 boy micahs.

dayle ross (2003) has a spelling that was not ranked for either boys or girls, although there were 408 boy dales.

then rory guilday (2002) had 258 boy rorys and a ? number of girl rorys as it was unranked

next, we have "hey that's a last name!" names: Taylor, Madison, Lee, Casey, Kendall, Kelly, Riley, Shay, and Hadley

then the unisex names- given in more equal proportion to boys and girls in the year of birth. i used nameberry's cutoff here- if the name was given to over ten percent of the minority, it's here

Ashton Bell (1999) was one of the 1028 boys and 925 girls given that name that year in a 53/47% split

Casey O'Brien (2001) was one of 1555 boys and 1283 girls given that name that year in a 55/45% split

Jamie Lee Rattray (1992) was one of 1159 boys and 4702 girls given that name that year in a 20/80% split

Jaime Bourbonnais (1998) was one of 1294 boys and 434 girls (although i imagine many of the boys were properly the spanish HIGH-me) in a 75/25% split

Skylar Irving (2002) was one of 680 boys and 2391 girls, a 22/78% split

Lee Stecklein (1994) was one of 917 boys and fewer than 186 girls (name was not ranked in the top thousand) which is at least an 84/16% split

Kendall Coyne Schofield (1992) was one of 787 boys and 746 girls, a very close split at 51/49%

Kendall Cooper (2002) was one of 524 boys and 1583 girls- ten years was enough for the name to start skewing more girl to the tune of 25/75%

Riley Brengman (2002) was one of 3959 boys and 3906 girls, another very close split at 50.3/49.7%

Sidney Morin (1995) was one of 412 boys and 883 girls, a 32/68% split. the spelling sydney was exclusively girl that year

Peyton Anderson (2001) was one of 2118 boys and 1885 girls, a 53/47% split

Peyton Hemp (2003) was one of 1768 boys and 1700 girls, a 51/49% split

honorable mention to Taylors Girard and House (1998) and Taylor Heise (2000) who were in the clear majority of girl Taylors (by a margin of over 10k) but had a significant minority of boy Taylors (about 3,000) in their years

that's it for this round! is this interesting to anyone besides me? are there other analyses of player names y'all are interested in? i've considered looking at surnames and doing nouns (knight! nurse! house!) and adjectives (fast! brown!) or breaking down by origin (czech, irish, english, french) and there are some first names i could break down by origin too. i can look at most popular initials, name length, syllable count...the possibilities abound

i'm back with more name data and this time i got charts

this post is all about initials, which can tell you a lot first of all (rimshot). after the absolute Anna sweep of the most common names, I expected A to be the clear winner. i was half right! A names tied with M names for most frequent at 25 each, or 12.2% of the 205 names. But that's still not even a quarter of the names! Here in bar chart form is the distribution

We have our clear standouts M and A, but K can certainly hold its own! The Kaley etc and Katy etc groupings really tip the scales there. We also have four letters represented by only one player: F as in Fanuza Kadirova, I as in Izzy Daniel, V as in Vanessa Upson, and Z as in Zoe Boyd.

Next is this fairly illegible pie chart of each letter- turns out there is a reason we don't cut pie into twenty one pieces!

To clear things up a little, I eliminated any initial used fewer than ten times, leaving A, C, E, J, K, L, M, and S which represented a combined 144 of 205 names.

Isn't that pretty?

A final stat- the five most common initials (A, M, K, S, and either E or J) account for 106 players, or over half the league. If you share a letter, you probably really share it! Thank goodness we have last names, eh?
