While I agree with most of it, I have to add something because something does bother me. Just because someone wants to cosplay a certain character, does not mean they are agreeing with everything that character does. Everyone has their own views about it, ofcourse. But, as example, I cosplayed Judge Frollo from the Hunchback of the Notredame, does not mean I agree with his views, and I do certainly not want to burn down half of Paris because of a 'boner' (so to speak).
Then that could just be me having a different idea of what cosplay is. I always thought people cosplay characters they have a certain connection with or look up to, so they can be them for a day, and then that way meet new people with the same interests. (That or the character happened to be popular) Hence why I think cosplaying these certain characters is a bit.... hm. And again, liking a villain characters is one thing, when Loki was a thing eeeeveryone wanted to cosplay him. Characters like I-forgot-the-freaky-deaky-murderer’s name however, again, is a character that is real, that is recent. The best way I can explain it is this guy reminds me of Marc Dutroux. You wouldn’t cosplay Marc Dutroix. So I don’t get why people would want to cosplay freaky deaky murder guy. Because he’s fictional? Because he’s pretty? To me it doesn’t make that much of a difference. You wouldn’t want to ever get into contact with a guy like that, let alone look like one. Same with the guy who’s named after a butt (the kidnapee, if you will). Why would you wanna cosplay him unless being beaten and humiliated and held captive by a PSYCHO is your... I dunno, kink?
This is my thought process behind the cosplayers, as far as I’m concerned, they’re romanticizing it just as much as the others, but that might just be me because I might have a different idea of cosplay... apparently :/
