Paul Robeson, center in the top photo, flanked by detectives, leaves the rally sponsored by the National Council of American-Soviet friendship at the Pythian Temple, November 13, 1956. Before going into the rally, where he was a principal speaker, Robeson passed through picket lines formed by some 200 persons protesting Russian intervention in Hungary. A few of the pickets tossed tomatoes and eggs at others entering the rally. About 250 uniformed policemen and 30 detectives were on hand.
