Sony has announced their latest full frame e-mount lens: the FE PZ 28-135mm F4 G OSS. The mouthful of a lens seems very impressive on paper, and is filled with features to delight photographers and videographers alike. The 28-135mm is designed to work best with full frame mirrorless cameras like the Sony A7 series, while also working on APS-C sized models and Super 35mm Sensor cameras like the NEX-FS700 and the new FS7.
The lens features a new Smooth Optics Design, included to counteract the effects of lens breathing, focus shifting and movements of the optical axis while zooming. On the lens body you'll find three control rings for adjusting zoom, focus and aperture settings on the fly, with the zoom operation also able to be controlled by a smooth and silent SSM (super sonic wave motor) power zoom dial with eight different zoom speeds. The focus dial also has a speed crank on it (the little knob thing sticking out) which is used for better tactile control when racking focus.
The 28-135mm also features Sony's OSS (Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization) negating up to four stops of hand shake for stills. The glass elements are coated in Sony's Nano AR system designed to minimize ghosting and flare, while three ED and five (!!) aspherical elements will help control distortion, sharpness and chromatic aberrations. Furthermore, a circular 9-blade diaphragm for the aperture will ensure that bokeh should be smooth and creamy, especially when using the telephoto end of the lens. As a final bonus, the lens features dust and moisture resistant construction, ensuring this lens a professional classification that will make it versatile in almost any conditions you're sure to encounter.
