Yoru and Akira! Based on the book Chinmoku 沈黙 (Silence) by Endō Shūsaku.

Akira is Black, goth and Christian. I genuinely took so long just to draw her body right....

Design details and ramblings here:

Yoru started wearing her hair in a ponytail to match Akira! They also share the same sword. Akira is 200cm while Yoru is 175cm. That makes the ōdachi look normal when Akira is holding it... The whole sword measures at 220 cm. I also made Akira's dress look like a hakama, like the one Yoru's wearing.

They originated from Q Corp, having left due to religious extermination. Akira is a member of the Pinky, 地猖 Dichāng Star, her real name being 孔明 Kǒng Míng, but she normally goes by 明 Akira instead. Yoru is not yet recognised as a member, only a sword carrier and apprentice of Akira.

I had written more lore here but I cut it out because it's still too unpolished rn... Sowwy.

Some really funny facts I remembered. Akira is related to Kong Qiu I guess, It’s not a coincidence that she’s also just as tall. Her real name is Kong Ming, so she probably originated from the Kong Family too.

From how the story of Chinmoku plays out, with the massacre of the Kong family and the persecution of Kakure Kirishitan (hiding Christians) it paints a clear picture that Kong Ming fled to Q Corp and changed her name to Akira.

There should be more Kong family survivors too, who joined the Pinky afterwards. I will try to write about them as we go through Yoru’s Canto, because otherwise it would be a waste of such good designs.

明 means bright :) and Q Corp’s singularity can only work in the dark. Idk what this implies but it’s cool.

Been researching some Japanese things to write about Q Corp. Citing Redditor Valenwover for the theory that Q Corp is based on Japanese culture, and how the Pinky finger hosts a meeting there, I have plenty of theories.

First of all, the shrines manufactures blades using X Corp’s ultra hard ores. They probably treat it like a thing to worship, like how Shinto religions have multiple gods in their pantheons, each sword is like a deity to them. I know I’m straight up making things up but I need it for a character 😭

Q Corp supplies weapons straight to H Corp, who in turn provides militia in Heishou beasts. They mentioned the X Corp in this CG.. they stood out to me because why tf are Excavators doing here? It would make sense if they were allied through Q Corp.

Anyway, Yoru was once a shrine maiden in one of the big shrines/smelting factory in Q Corp. His work entails cleaning the overground place while people smelt and create tons of char smokes above ground. Because Shinto.. revolves a lot around cleaning and purifying. He also needs to do quality checks on the swords they produce, and thoroughly tests it out before it can be submitted to clients. It’s a profession he reveres.

I remember reading that the talismans don’t work well unless it’s in a dark environment. So imagine Q Corp is always covered in factory smokes. And Yoru constantly needs to make sure everything is clean. Wouldn’t be surprised that he developed a deep compulsion with it.

About his source, Chinmoku (Silence) is about Christians in Japan who were slaughtered and tortured if they don’t give up their beliefs. Much like the burning of Buddhist temples, there were so many instances of religious suppression in Japan that I think could paint a unique cruelty to Q Corp. and explain why Yoru is so afraid of being unclean.
