Linux workstation died
My trusted "Linux Monster" died today. Rebooted, and froze on the POST. Seems to be the memory that packed up, but my real problem is the only "backup" sticks I have are pc2-4200 and my mobo refuses them. So I'm without workstation!
The current, now dead RAM is OCZ PC2-6400 8GB PLATINUM QUAD luckily it's posh enough to have a lifetime guarantee and I'll get replacements. I was always a little bit suspicious at these sticks since their default voltage is 2.1V (the standard DDR2 voltage is 1.8!) and I think it was always these sticks that prevented me passing over 4.2Ghz on air.
The current config is otherwise pretty awesome, even if now slightly dated:
Gigabyte GA-EP45-Extreme, comes with it's kilogram of copper heatsink.
Intel Q9650 -- best CPU of that generation, runs at 4Ghz (stock 3ghz) on stock voltage -- these days it runs at 3.8, slightly undervolted.
Couple of spinpoint F3s.
That thing can build a complete distro, from the toolchain to webkit in less than an hour.
Anyway, ordered 4G "temporary" ram, until OCZ sends me replacement sticks..
To be Continued
