♕The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert♕

♕April 20th, 1992♕

♕Wembley Stadium♕

♕After the passing of their front-man Freddie Mercury due to complications of AIDS on November 24th, 1991, the other members of Queen, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon, came together with their Manager, Jim "Miami" Beach, to celebrate the life and legacy of the one of a kind Freddie Mercury. Not only did they want this concert to share the legacy of their late friend but also wanted to spread awareness of the disease AIDs, and wants to raise money for research on this Illness. By February 1992, the plans of this concert had gone out, and soon as tickets were on sale, all 72,000 tickets were sold out in three hours. Multiple groups/people played that day, not just the three men Freddie had played with for roughly twenty years. These people were Elton John, David Bowie, George Micheal, Metallica, Def Leppard, Guns N' Roses, Elizabeth Taylor, and many more amazing artists. Months later a DVD of the concert was released and you can find the full concert on YouTube as well. This was the start of the still-active The Mercury Phoenix Trust and brought many great musicians together to celebrate the life and legacy of the amazing Freddie Mercury!♕

♕Queen's first gig- June 27, 1970♕

♕Location: City Hall, Truro, UK♕

♕Although the ads had said Smile in the paper, this is the very first gig for the band Queen. They performed for a British Red Cross charity event, in which Drummer's Mother, Winifred Taylor, was involved with the charity. Sadly, there isn't a confirmed set list but drummer Roger Taylor, singer Freddie Mercury, and guitarist Brian May had confirmed some songs such as Stone Cold Crazy, Father to Son, Son And Daughter, and Doing All Right, but then bassist Mike Grose had said the band covered Led Zeppelin songs. For example, Communication Breakdown, which Freddie had sung before with his previous band Wreckage (late 1969). The band also covered a few Elvis and Little Richard songs. They were paid 50 quid (66.77 U.S. Dollars) between them.♕

♕Roger Taylor- "[Freddie] didn't have the technique he developed later on; he sounded a little bit like a very powerful sheep... Freddie had a natural musicality. It was a real gift, but he had a very strange vibrato when we first met, which some people found rather distressing. But he applied himself and forged his own persona. He invented himself... That was actually arranged by my mother in aid of the Red Cross. We were paid £50 which was quite a lot of money back then. I’m not sure many people turned up though."♕

♕Brian May- "Our stage act was a show, more rock and roll-oriented than the first album. If you go on stage and people don’t know your material you can get boring if you do your own stuff all the time.”♕

♕Mike Grose- I know we had £50 for it. But there wasn't enough there to pay us I don't think, as it was a very small crowd. It was advertised as Smile but by then we were Queen... Freddie put a lot into that first concert at the City Hall. I remember he jumped about all over the place, prancing about, a bit like Mick Jagger - but Freddie-style."♕

♕Winifred Taylor (Roger's Mum)- "He just kept saying how regal it sounded."♕

♕After this gig, Farrokh Bulsara had adopted the name, Freddie Mercury, as his stage name then officially made changed his name not too long after that.♕

♕Queen's tenth studio album, Hot Space, was after Queen released Queen's Greatest Hits. With a new era starting, Queen started a mixture of disco, funk, rhythm, blues, dance, and pop music as their new sound. The tone for Hot Space was set after the success of their single Under Pressure, which came out in November of 81 then later appeared on the album. This wasn't a great success, many fans were confused and disliked the new sounds. This album also was different recording-wise, The four members' lives were separate due to the offers Munich had. Brian May wasn't fond of how this album was created, since they weren't really working together and the amounts of drinking, clubbing, and drug usage the party was doing. The album cover was a mixture of The Beatles' Let It Be and Andy Warhol style coloring. Once Hot Space came out, it confused a lot of fans but it did reach No. 4 on UK charts but only achieves 'only' gold in both UK and US, it was a drop for Queen's usual platinum. Queen went on tour to promote Hot Space, after a tour of the album's sale still being discouraging, all four members took a break together to do solo work and to refresh the creativity of Queen.♕

♕Brian May: "Hot Space was a mistake if only timing-wise...We got heavily into funk and it was quite similar to what Michael Jackson did on Thriller. But the timing was wrong. Disco was a dirty word."♕

♕Author Dan Ross- "The fans hated it {Hot Space}, Roger Taylor and Brian May loathed it, even John Deacon and Freddie Mercury thought it was a mistake."♕

♕Today marks 39 years since Hot Space came out!♕

♕I want to add to this post from my perspective, what I had read about the Hot Space time period, this was a rough time for the boys due to the 'failure' of Hot Space, 1982 was named the "traumatic" year for Queen. I know there is controversy when it comes to Hot Space, and this post is just from stats and not my own opinion, this is the only part out of the whole post that is my own opinion, and personally, my feeling for Hot Space is mutual, it's not the best Queen album but it's not really the worse.♕

♕Queen's first gig with John Deacon- July 2, 1971♕

♕Location- Surrey College, England♕

♕After going through multiple bassists (Mike Grose, Barry Mitchell, and Doug Bogie) Queen had their first gig with John Deacon. It was at Surrey College, this is the start of the 20-year lineup of Queen. There is no official set list of the gig sadly or any photographs, but there was an argument between John and Freddie on the attire for the gig. John had wanted to wear a simple t-shirt and jeans but Freddie had a certain shirt he wanted John to wear. John had finally given in and wore the shirt Freddie had picked out for him. Not only did Queen's official lineup start that night but their image started to spark that night as well.♕

♕Roger Taylor- "We thought he was great... We were all so used to each other and were so over the top. We thought that because he was quiet he would fit in with us without too much upheaval. He was a great bass player too – and the fact that he was a wizard with electronics was definitely a deciding factor."♕

♕After the fallout of Hot Space, the boys went temporarily on their separate ways. Brian went to LA to make his solo album Star Fleet Project, Roger went to Montreux to work on his 2nd solo album Strange Frontier, Freddie went to Munich to work on Mr. Bad Guy, and John had gone home to his family, not wanting to do a solo album. After an 18 month break from each other, the boys went back into the studio and started to work on their next album. The name came from Roger Taylor when he had told the others "Let's give them the works!". The band had been working on some tracks before and demoed them to the other members. There were a few wonderful collaborations with band members for some songs, and more of Queen's iconic songs had come off this album. There are three well-known music videos from this album (I Want To Break Free, Radio Gaga, and It's A Hard Life). There are some Unreleased and demo songs that were released later on such as Thank God It's Chrismas (Brian May and Roger Taylor), I Dream of Christmas (Brian May), Love Kills (Freddie Mercury and Giorgio Moroder), and much more other songs. The Works is the eleventh studio album by Queen but it's the band's first studio album to be released by Capitol Records in the United States. This was the first time Queen had recorded in America at Record Plant, Los Angeles, California then went to Musicland, Munich, Germany.♕

♕John Deacon: "We were disappointed with it {Hot Space} too, so we really did talk about how we were going to attack the next album. With The Works, we decided to go towards the things people actually associated with Queen"♕
