On today's episode of "everybody's having a bad time" enter Zhan Junbai!
That damn watch
I hate what he did but my god does he look good in that uniform (and the sharp breath where he blows out cold air but it looks like he's blowing out cigarette smoke...it's a damn good shot)
Prompt: Tangchun loses his memory and is sticking to Junbai like a puppy. Junbai likes it but fears the day Tangchun remembers. Twist: Tangchun pretends so he can spend more time together before revenege tears them apart forever
God fucking damn, I'm sorry this took me so fucking long to write. I don't know why but this prompt just did not want to cooperate with me. But it's done now, 7.6K words later, and I hope you enjoy it!
After leaving Zhan Tianqing’s mansion, Zhan Junbai and Yu Tangchun returned to Zhan Junbai’s mansion, Zhan Junbai dragging Yu Tangchun up to his room. Once they were inside the room, Yu Tangchun wrenched his wrist out of Zhan Junbai’s grasp and backed away from him, tears streaming down his face as he glared at the man.
“You…you were the one. You…killed my family” he snarled. Zhan Junbai looked at him with a strange look on his face before he took a step forward.
“Tangchun—” he started, reaching out to touch when Yu Tangchun smacked his hand away, a crazed look in his eye.
“DON’T TOUCH ME! YOU…MURDERER! YOU STAY AWAY FROM ME!” he screamed as he let out a sob. He then began to sob harder, curling in on himself as his sobs soon turned into wails. All the while, Zhan Junbai just stood there and watched, a look of sadness on his face. He wanted to be angry, of course he wanted to be angry, Yu Tangchun went to his uncle’s mansion and nearly fucking shot him (not that he didn’t think he deserved it, personally, but those were his own personal thoughts that weren’t going to be shared with anybody). But this was Yu Tangchun, his opera singer, his little songbird, and he couldn’t be mad at him…at least not for too long. However, his thoughts were soon interrupted by the sound of coughing; horrible, racking coughs; the kind that shook one’s body. He quickly shook himself out of it and looked at Yu Tangchun, who had one hand pressed into the mattress, almost as if he was stabilizing himself, while the other hand was covering his mouth as he coughed. Yu Tangchun continued to cough and cough, coughing so hard at one point he would have collapsed if Zhan Junbai hadn’t rushed forward and caught him.
“Tangchun” he breathed. Yu Tangchun glanced at him and tried to push away, but Zhan Junbai just wrapped an arm around his waist, holding him close.
“Shh, don’t fight. Don’t fight” he soothed as he reached up with his other hand, gently taking the hand that was covering Yu Tangchun’s mouth in his larger one.
“No” Yu Tangchun whimpered, trying to pull his hand away but his body was far too weak after all the harsh coughing so Zhan Junbai just easily pulled his hand away and looked at it, his eyes widening when he saw that his palm was almost covered in a mixture of blood and mucus. He let out a soft gasp before he quickly unwrapped his arm from around Yu Tangchun and guided him over to the bed, sitting him down.
“Stay. I’ll be right back” he declared. He then turned and headed out of the room, going to get some water and some towels. After he left, Yu Tangchun blinked sleepily at the door before he let out a heavy sigh and shut his eyes as he collapsed back onto the bed.
~*~*~*~*~*~
When Zhan Junbai returned to Yu Tangchun’s room and saw him passed out on the bed, his eyes widened and he quickly rushed over, placing the tray full of towels and a warm bowl of water down on the bedside table before he reached out and grasped Yu Tangchun by the shoulders.
“Tangchun. Yu Tangchun!” he exclaimed, looking at the young man in concern. He then noticed how warm Yu Tangchun’s body felt under his hand, so he let go of one of his shoulders and reached up, gently touching the back of his hand to Yu Tangchun’s forehead, hissing at how hot it felt. He then looked over his shoulder towards the door, where Qiu Ming was standing, since he heard Zhan Junbai shouting.
“Get Chen Yuzhi. Now” he snapped. Qiu Ming blinked in surprise before he dipped his head and turned, heading out of the doorway and down the stairs to get Chen Yuzhi. While he was leaving to get Chen Yuzhi, Zhan Junbai looked back at Yu Tangchun, whose face was pinched in pain, and sighed before he carefully sat Yu Tangchun up so that he could pull back the covers. Once the covers were pulled back, Zhan Junbai carefully scooped Yu Tangchun into his arms before carefully maneuvering him under the covers, tucking them up to his chin once he was under them. He then turned to the tray of towels and picked one up, saturating it with water from the bowl on the tray before squeezing out the extra water. He then turned and gently took Yu Tangchun’s hand, the one covered in blood and mucus, and began to clean it, making sure that he got all of it off. After he cleaned his hand, he placed that towel down and took another towel, soaking it with water before ringing it out, gently beginning to pat Yu Tangchun’s face and neck with it. At the cool touch of the towel, Yu Tangchun let out a whimper, causing Zhan Junbai to look at him with concern before he hushed him.
“Shh…shhh, I know. I know” he soothed, reaching up to gently brush his bangs out of his face. He then continued to pat Yu Tangchun’s face and neck with the wet towel, making sure to cool down his skin a little before he resoaked the towel in water, ringing it out again before placing it on Yu Tangchun’s forehead. Just then, Qiu Ming stepped into the room before stepping to the side, motioning for Chen Yuzhi, who was following him, to enter. Chen Yuzhi then made his way over to the bed, Zhan Junbai looking up at him.
“What happened?” Chen Yuzhi asked. Zhan Junbai shook his head.
“I’m not sure. He broke into a coughing spasm and coughed so hard that he coughed up blood. He also seems to have a slight fever” he explained. Chen Yuzhi looked at him with wide eyes.
“He coughed up blood?” he repeated. Zhan Junbai nodded and reached over, picking up the towel he had used to wipe the blood and mucus off Yu Tangchun’s hand and opened it, showing it to Chen Yuzhi. When Chen Yuzhi saw it, he hissed before he sighed.
“Damn it…” he murmured as he ran a hand through his hair. He then looked at Zhan Junbai.
“He might have bronchitis” he stated. Zhan Junbai frowned.
“Bronchitis? What’s that?” he asked. Chen Yuzhi sighed.
“It’s the inflammation of the lining of bronchial tubes, which carries air to and from the lungs” he explained. Zhan Junbai frowned.
“Can it cause a fever?” he asked. Chen Yuzhi nodded.
“It can…but only a slight one” he explained before he sighed.
“I don’t have the medicine for bronchitis with me at the moment…I’ll have to go to my clinic and get it but bronchitis is a virus that improves by itself. However, given that Yu Tangchun has his throat disease, it can make his symptoms worse. If you don’t mind, Executive Zhan, could you just…keep an eye on him overnight? If he gets worse, please don’t hesitate to give me a call” he instructed. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“Of course. Thank you for coming out” he thanked. Chen Yuzhi nodded, taking one last look at Yu Tangchun before he turned and headed out of the door, Qiu Ming bowing to him as he left. Once he was gone, Zhan Junbai looked over at Qiu Ming.
“Get me more towels and a new bowl of water” he ordered. Qiu Ming nodded and walked over to the tray, picking it up and carrying it out of the room as Zhan Junbai turned and looked back at Yu Tangchun, who looked a bit more peaceful, but not really. He sighed and reached out, carefully lifting Yu Tangchun’s head off the pillow so that he could place another pillow underneath it to prop it up to make sure his airways were somewhat open. After he had propped his head up, Qiu Ming returned with new towels and a new bowl of cool water. Zhan Junbai dipped his head to him before he reached out and took one of the new towels and dipped it in the cool bowl of water, wringing out the excess water before placing the new cool towel on Yu Tangchun’s forehead. Yu Tangchun let out a soft sigh of relief and Zhan Junbai couldn’t help but smile softly.
“Get some rest, Tangchun” he murmured as he watched over the young man.
~*~*~*~*~*~
About halfway through the night, as Zhan Junbai was quietly dozing off in the chair next to Yu Tangchun’s bed, Yu Tangchun was sleeping soundly, well, as soundly as one could with a rattling chest, when he took a deep breath, only to let out a horrible, chest rattling cough. It was so harsh that it startled Zhan Junbai out of his sleep, causing him to let out a soft gasp before he realized that Yu Tangchun was currently hacking up a lung.
“Tangchun” he breathed, quickly reaching out and helping the young opera singer sit up as he continued to cough and cough, tears now streaming down his face.
“Shh, shh…it’s okay…it’s okay” he soothed as he gently rubbed his back, noticing how clammy and sticky Yu Tangchun felt through his clothes. He then took his hand and gently touched the side of Yu Tangchun’s neck, noting that it was both extremely warm and sticky.
“Shit” he hissed before he looked at Yu Tangchun.
“Tangchun…how are you feeling?” he asked. Yu Tangchun looked over at him and slowly lowered his hand from his mouth, revealing a blood covered palm.
“Cold” he croaked before his eyes rolled to the back of his head and he fainted.
“Yu Tangchun!” Zhan Junbai shouted as he caught Yu Tangchun in his arms, cradling him to his chest. As he held Yu Tangchun, he could feel him trembling in his arms while his skin was also burning under his fingertips.
“God damn it” he murmured as he scooped Yu Tangchun in his arms, cradling him to his chest as he stood to his feet, heading towards the door, just as Qiu Ming opened it.
“Executive” he panted.
“We’re taking Boss Yu to the hospital. Call Chen Yuzhi and tell him to meet us there” he ordered. Qiu Ming nodded and quickly rushed off to call the young doctor as Zhan Junbai carefully headed down the stairs, Yu Tangchun cradled in his arms. Once he reached the lobby, he looked down at Yu Tangchun, who was still shivering in his arms, and noticed blood at the corner of his mouth.
“Oh Tangchun” he whispered, just as Qiu Ming walked over to them.
“Executive” he murmured. Zhan Junbai looked at him before he nodded.
“Let’s go” he ordered.
~*~*~*~*~*~
At the hospital, the minute the nurses and doctor saw Yu Tangchun, he was quickly admitted while Zhan Junbai was instructed to wait outside. As he waited outside, Chen Yuzhi quickly walked over to him, looking at him in concern.
“How is he? What happened?” he demanded. Zhan Junbai looked over at him and shook his head.
“He was resting just fine but then he broke out into a terrible coughing fit and when I was rubbing his back to try and soothe him, he was clammy and shivering but his skin was burning up. At one point, he even fainted” he explained. Chen Yuzhi was quiet and crossed his arms, a look of concentration entering his face. Zhan Junbai was quiet as he stared at him, wondering what the young doctor was thinking about, when Chen Yuzhi looked up at him.
“He probably has pneumonia” he declared. Zhan Junbai frowned.
“What is that?” he asked. Chen Yuzhi hummed.
“While bronchitis is inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, pneumonia is an infection that inflames air sacs in one or both lungs, which may fill with fluid. For people like Yu Tangchun, pneumonia is deadly as it can kill him if it’s not treated” he explained. Zhan Junbai’s eyes widened.
“What?” he breathed. Chen Yuzhi nodded solemnly.
“If not treated, pneumonia can and will kill Boss Yu faster than his throat disease” he declared before he smiled softly.
“But don’t worry, these doctors are trained like me in western medicine…they’ll do whatever they can to cure Yu Tangchun” he assured. Zhan Junbai looked at him before he huffed.
“I wish I had more faith in them like you do” he murmured. Chen Yuzhi smiled slightly.
“Well, if you don’t have faith in the doctors, then have faith in Yu Tangchun. Have faith that he’ll pull through and that he’ll be okay” he suggested. Zhan Junbai hummed before he nodded slightly.
“I think I’ll do that” he agreed. Chen Yuzhi smiled slightly again before he yawned, quickly covering his mouth.
“Excuse me” he murmured. Zhan Junbai shook his head as he looked at his watch.
“It is rather early…” he mused before he looked over at Qiu Ming.
“Qiu Ming” he called out, the man quickly walking over to them.
“Yes Executive?” he asked. Zhan Junbai motioned to Chen Yuzhi.
“Please escort Dr. Chen home” he instructed before he leaned over so that his mouth was by Qiu Ming’s ear.
“And please pay him handsomely” he whispered. Qiu Ming nodded as Chen Yuzhi gave Zhan Junbai a look.
“There’s no need—” he started when Zhan Junbai shook his head.
“I don’t want to hear it. Qiu Ming, please” he instructed. Qiu Ming nodded again before he looked at Chen Yuzhi.
“Dr. Chen, please” he stated. Chen Yuzhi huffed and nodded before he looked at Zhan Junbai.
“If you need anything—” he started when Zhan Junbai smiled and nodded.
“I know, I know. I’ll call” he assured. Chen Yuzhi smiled before he turned and followed after Qiu Ming, leaving Zhan Junbai alone in the hospital. As they walked away, Zhan Junbai watched before he walked over to one of the chairs and sat down, leaning his head back against the wall, shutting his eyes. He must have fallen asleep because the next thing he knew, a nurse was shaking his shoulder, telling him that Yu Tangchun had woken up from his fainting spell. He quickly stood to his feet and followed after the nurse, heading into Yu Tangchun’s hospital room, walking over to his bed.
“Tangchun…how are you feeling?” he asked, looking at the young man. Yu Tangchun looked up at him before he frowned.
“I’m…sorry, do I know you?” he asked. Zhan Junbai blinked before he frowned this time.
“You…you don’t know who I am?” he replied. Yu Tangchun looked at him before he shook his head.
“No, I’m sorry” he replied. Zhan Junbai frowned before he looked over at the nurse, who was checking Yu Tangchun’s charts, and quickly walked over to her.
“How come he can’t remember me?” he asked quietly. The nurse looked at him before she sighed.
“His fever was at 40 C for a while and when one’s body remains at the temperature for an extended amount of time, it can start to do damage” she explained. Zhan Junbai frowned.
“Is it permanent?” he inquired. The nurse shook her head.
“I’m not sure” she replied. Zhan Junbai took a deep breath before he walked over to Yu Tangchun and smiled softly.
“Boss Yu” he started, making Yu Tangchun look over at him and tilt his head to the side.
“Yes?” he replied. Zhan Junbai smiled a little wider before he bowed slightly.
“My name is Zhan Junbai. I’m here to take you home” he stated. Yu Tangchun blinked in surprise.
“Oh…are you sure? That’s really not necessary…” he started when Zhan Junbai smiled and shook his head.
“I don’t mind” he assured before he motioned outside.
“I’ll wait for you outside whenever the nurses say that you’re ready to be discharged” he explained. Yu Tangchun smiled and nodded.
“Thank you” he replied. Zhan Junbai nodded before he turned and headed out of the room, beginning to pace back and forth.
‘Okay…okay, this can work in your favor. If he can’t remember who you are…then he probably doesn’t remember what you’ve done’ he thought to himself, just as a gentle hand touched his shoulder, making him jump. He then turned to see Yu Tangchun smiling at him, something he hadn’t done in a long time. Zhan Junbai felt his heart clench slightly before he smiled.
“Are you ready to go?” he asked. Yu Tangchun nodded.
“Yes” he answered. Zhan Junbai nodded before he and Yu Tangchun headed out of the hospital, taking a stroll down the street. They walked in silence for a little while before Zhan Junbai looked over at Yu Tangchun.
“Boss Yu” he started, making Yu Tangchun look back at him.
“Yes?” he asked. Zhan Junbai smiled slightly.
“I actually have to stop somewhere first before we go home. Would you like to accompany me?” he inquired. Yu Tangchun nodded.
“Sure” he replied. Zhan Junbai nodded before he continued down the road. His destination? Chen Yuzhi’s clinic.
~*~*~*~*~*~
When Zhan Junbai and Yu Tangchun arrived at Chen Yuzhi’s clinic, Chen Yuzhi looked up from his work and smiled.
“Executive Zhan” he greeted before he looked at Yu Tangchun and grinned.
“Boss Yu! How are you feeling?” he asked. Yu Tangchun blinked before he nodded slightly.
“I feel fine…” he replied before he frowned.
“I’m sorry, do I know you?” he asked. Chen Yuzhi looked at him in shock before he looked over at Zhan Junbai in confusion. Zhan Junbai sighed and walked over to him, standing before him.
“When I asked one of the nurses, she said he lost his memory. Is that a symptom of pneumonia?” he asked. Chen Yuzhi frowned.
“It can be…” he murmured.
“Do you know if it’s a permanent thing?” Zhan Junbai inquired. Chen Yuzhi shook his head.
“I’m sorry, I’m not sure. I’ve never experienced a case of pneumonia where someone loses their memory…I’ll have to do a bit more research” he explained before he looked over at Yu Tangchun.
“Boss Yu, I haven’t introduced myself. I’m Dr. Chen Yuzhi” he introduced. Yu Tangchun smiled and dipped his head.
“Nice to meet you” he replied. Chen Yuzhi hummed before he tilted his head to the side.
“How are you feeling?” he asked. Yu Tangchun nodded.
“I feel alright…though my throat is quite sore” he murmured. Chen Yuzhi smiled and motioned to the chair in front of his desk.
“I can check it out for you” he offered. Yu Tangchun’s eyes brightened.
“Oh, that would be wonderful. Thank you” he thanked as he walked forward and sat down. Chen Yuzhi then took out a small towel and rolled it up, placing it on his desk before reaching out to take Yu Tangchun’s wrist and place it on the towel so that he had an easier time checking his pulse.
“Hmm…your pulse is a little quickened…but I suppose that’s normal” he murmured before he looked up at Zhan Junbai.
“Executive Zhan, I need to speak with Yu Tangchun privately for a moment. Will you step outside please?” he asked. Zhan Junbai nodded and turned, heading outside, as he had no reason to suspect that Chen Yuzhi was hiding something from him as Yu Tangchun obviously didn’t seem to remember anything. Once he was gone, Chen Yuzhi looked at Yu Tangchun with narrowed eyes.
“Boss Yu…do you really not remember who I am? Who Zhan Junbai is?” he whispered. Yu Tangchun looked at him before he smiled.
“Of course I remember you, Yuzhi. I remember Zhan Junbai as well. When I woke up, I had a lapse of memory but on the walk over here, it slowly came back” he replied. Chen Yuzhi looked at him in shock before he laughed and shook his head.
“What a talented actor you are, Boss Yu” he murmured. Yu Tangchun laughed.
“I’m an opera singer, I should hope I’m a good actor” he replied. Chen Yuzhi hummed before he looked at him.
“How long are you going to keep up the charade?” he asked. Yu Tangchun sighed.
“Until either Zhan Junbai finds out or I can’t keep up the charade anymore” he answered. Chen Yuzhi hummed before he sighed.
“Well…just be careful. I don’t know what Zhan Junbai will do when he realizes that you’ve been faking your memory loss” he stated. Yu Tangchun shook his head.
“He won’t do anything rash” he replied. Chen Yuzhi hummed again.
“If you say so” he murmured before he looked at him.
“Did the hospital give you any medication?” he asked. Yu Tangchun looked at him before he shook his head.
“No” he answered. Chen Yuzhi tsked.
“They’re supposed to do that” he grumbled as he stood to his feet and walked over to his cabinets full of different medicines, searching through them until he found the medicine for Yu Tangchun’s throat disease and the medicine to hopefully help stop the pneumonia. He then walked back over to Yu Tangchun and handed him the two pill bottles.
“Make sure you take the pneumonia medication twice a day, once in the morning and once before you go to bed” he instructed. Yu Tangchun nodded.
“Thank you, Yuzhi” he murmured before he stood to his feet, smiling softly.
“I should probably get going…Junbai might start to get suspicious” he stated. Chen Yuzhi nodded.
“I’ll stop by every now and then to check on your progress. Let him know that, please” he instructed. Yu Tangchun nodded before he dipped his head and turned, heading out of the clinic, Chen Yuzhi watching him with a strange expression on his face.
~*~*~*~*~*~
Outside the clinic, Yu Tangchun looked around before he saw Zhan Junbai leaning against the wall and smiled slightly before he walked over to him, standing before him.
“You were in there for quite a while. What did you two talk about?” Zhan Junbai asked, raising an eyebrow as he pushed off the wall. Yu Tangchun looked at him with wide eyes before he smiled and held up the pill bottles.
“He just gave me medication and told me how to take them. He also said he would be stopping by every now and then to check on my progress” he explained. Zhan Junbai hummed.
“I see” he murmured before he smiled.
“Shall we get going?” he asked. Yu Tangchun nodded and the two men began walking again, Yu Tangchun clinging close to Zhan Junbai, much to Zhan Junbai’s surprise but he just chalked it up to the memory loss and continued walking, quietly reveling in the fact that Yu Tangchun wanted to be close to him.
~*~*~*~*~*~
When Yu Tangchun and Zhan Junbai returned to the Zhan Mansion, Yu Tangchun looked around in “shock”.
“Is this…is this where I’m staying?” he asked, looking over at Zhan Junbai. Zhan Junbai smiled and nodded.
“Mm. You’ve actually been staying with me for a while because of your throat disease” he explained. Yu Tangchun nodded slowly.
“Oh…I see” he murmured, just as he felt a cough building up in his chest. His eyes widened and he quickly reached out, grasping Zhan Junbai’s arm tightly as he began to harshly cough. Zhan Junbai’s eyes widened and he looked over at him, quickly reaching out and grabbing him before guiding him over to the couch, sitting him down.
“Tangchun” he murmured, his voice tight with concern. Yu Tangchun shook his head, continuing to cough before the coughing spasm finally subsided, leaving him wheezing.
“Let’s give you some medicine. Can I have the bottles please?” Zhan Junbai asked, holding out his hand. Yu Tangchun nodded and weakly reached into his pockets, pulling out the pill bottles that Chen Yuzhi gave him before handing them over to Zhan Junbai.
“Thank god Chen Yuzhi labeled these” Zhan Junbai murmured before he placed down one of the bottles and opened the other one, popping it open before shaking out a pill. He then handed the pill to him.
“Tangchun. Here” he stated. Yu Tangchun reached out and weakly took the pill, popping it into his mouth before swallowing. Zhan Junbai then handed him a cup of tea that was on the coffee table, handing it to him.
“Drink” he ordered. Yu Tangchun reached out and took the cup, taking a sip of the tea, careful to take small and slow sips so that he didn’t cough up another lung. After he had drunk the entire cup of tea and took a deep breath, he looked at Zhan Junbai.
“Thank you” he croaked. Zhan Junbai nodded
“Of course” he replied. Yu Tangchun then looked over at Zhan Junbai’s wrist, looking at the watch that had haunted his memories, before he smiled and pointed to the watch.
“That’s quite the intricate watch” he murmured. Zhan Junbai looked down at the watch and his eyes widened slightly before he looked back at Yu Tangchun.
“My uncle got it for me for my eighteenth birthday” he explained. Yu Tangchun nodded.
“Oh…may I see it?” he asked. Zhan Junbai hesitated, unlike the first time Yu Tangchun had asked to see the watch, before he slowly unlatched it from around his wrist, handing it to the young opera singer. Yu Tangchun took the watch and slowly turned it in his hand, feeling his hands tremble as he touched the watch again before he looked up at Zhan Junbai and held out the watch.
“It’s a beautiful watch” he murmured. Zhan Junbai hummed as he looked at the watch.
“Is it? I think it’s quite dirty” he mused. Yu Tangchun frowned.
“What do you mean?” he asked. Zhan Junbai looked up at him with wide eyes before he smiled and shook his head.
“Oh, nothing” he replied before he tilted his head at Yu Tangchun.
“If you’re up to it, would you like to take a walk through the garden? Or if that’s too much, would you like to sit outside in the garden? Fresh air is good for recovery” he explained. Yu Tangchun looked at him in surprise; he thought Zhan Junbai would want to keep him locked inside, keep him like a caged bird, but that didn’t seem to be the case.
“Oh…yes, actually” he replied. Zhan Junbai smiled and stood to his feet, holding out his hand to Yu Tangchun, who looked up at him before he smiled and took his hand, allowing Zhan Junbai to help him up. Both men then headed out to the garden, Zhan Junbai guiding Yu Tangchun over to one of the garden chairs, sitting him down.
“I’m not an old man, Executive Zhan…I’m just a little weak, that’s all” Yu Tangchun murmured. Zhan Junbai huffed as he walked behind Yu Tangchun and gently placed his hands on his shoulders.
“I can’t risk you fainting again…” he grumbled before he sighed and hung his head.
“You don’t know how badly you scared me” he whispered, more to himself than Yu Tangchun, but Yu Tangchun still heard him. His eyes widened slightly and he looked up at Zhan Junbai before he looked back out on the garden, taking in a deep breath of air.
“Careful; don’t breath too deeply or you’ll send yourself into another coughing spasm” Zhan Junbai murmured, gently running his thumb over Yu Tangchun’s shoulder blade. Yu Tangchun chuffed.
“I didn’t think you cared, Executive Zhan” he mused. Zhan Junbai looked down at him, almost scandalized.
“Of course I care. I’m almost offended you think I don’t” he grumbled. Yu Tangchun laughed softly and Zhan Junbai smiled, something that the two hadn’t done together for a very long time, mainly because they were focused on their own goals; for Yu Tangchun, it was getting revenge and for Zhan Junbai, it was gaining power and control. But here, neither man were thinking about their goals…they were just enjoying each other’s company and the nice day.
~*~*~*~*~*~
After spending some time in the garden, Yu Tangchun and Zhan Junbai headed back inside the mansion, Yu Tangchun looking over at Zhan Junbai.
“That was nice…thank you” he murmured. Zhan Junbai looked back at him and blinked in surprise before he nodded.
“Of course. Is there anything else you’d like to do? Without exasperating your throat, of course” he asked. Yu Tangchun looked at him before he shook his head.
“Nothing…I’d actually like to rest, if that’s alright” he murmured. Zhan Junbai’s eyes widened and he nodded.
“Of course. Of course it’s fine” he assured. Yu Tangchun nodded before he smiled slightly.
“Then I’ll retire to my room” he murmured. Zhan Junbai nodded and watched as Yu Tangchun turned and headed up the stairs to his bedroom. He continued to watch as Yu Tangchun walked into his bedroom and once the door shut, he let out a sigh of relief and walked back over to the couch, about to sit down when there was knock on the door. He looked up in surprise before he walked over to the front door and opened it, revealing Chen Yuzhi.
“Oh, Dr. Chen” he greeted before he stepped aside, motioning for Chen Yuzhi to enter. Chen Yuzhi smiled slightly and dipped his head as he stepped inside, looking at Zhan Junbai.
“How’s Boss Yu?” he asked. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“He’s doing better…he did have a coughing spasm a few hours ago but I gave him one of the pneumonia pills and that seemed to stop the coughing for a little while” he explained. Chen Yuzhi hummed before he pointed to the second floor.
“May I?” he asked. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“Of course” he replied. Chen Yuzhi nodded and turned, heading towards the stairs that led to the upstairs bedroom, heading for Yu Tangchun’s bedroom while Zhan Junbai watched with a careful eye.
~*~*~*~*~*~
Inside Yu Tangchun’s bedroom, Yu Tangchun was sitting at his desk, reading a book when the door opened and Chen Yuzhi poked his head inside.
“Boss Yu” he called out, making Yu Tangchun look up from his book and smile.
“Dr. Chen” he replied as he closed the book. Chen Yuzhi smiled as he walked into the room and over to him, placing his doctor bag on the desk before he crossed his arms.
“Zhan Junbai said you said you had another coughing spasm” he stated. Yu Tangchun nodded.
“I did…this illness seems to be exasperating my lungs more than my throat disease” he mused as he let out a sigh, only to have his eyes widen before he began coughing harshly. Chen Yuzhi’s eyes widened and he reached out, quickly rubbing Yu Tangchun’s back.
“Just breathe, Boss Yu. Just breathe, you’re okay. You’re okay” he murmured as Yu Tangchun continued to cough and cough.
“Shh…you’re okay. You’re okay” he soothed as he continued to rub Yu Tangchun’s back before he sighed.
“I’m going to go get Zhan Junbai, okay?” he asked. Yu Tangchun nodded as he continued to cough, tears streaming down his cheeks at this point. Chen Yuzhi then removed his hand from his back as he rushed out of the room and ran over the banister, looking over it down at Zhan Junbai.
“Executive” he called out, making Zhan Junbai look up at him from where he was sitting on the couch with wide eyes.
“Yes?” he replied.
“Can you bring Yu Tangchun’s medication and a glass of water please?” Chen Yuzhi asked. Zhan Junbai quickly shot to his feet, grabbing Yu Tangchun’s pill bottles before he rushed into the kitchen, pouring Yu Tangchun a large glass of water before he came rushing up the stairs and over to Chen Yuzhi. He then handed him the medicine bottles before he headed inside the bedroom, Chen Yuzhi at his heels as he walked over to Yu Tangchun, who was taking in deep breaths, tears still streaming down his cheeks.
“Tangchun” Zhan Junbai murmured, causing Yu Tangchun to look up at him with wide eyes.
“Executive Zhan” he croaked. Zhan Junbai shook his head.
“Shh…don’t talk. Don’t talk” he whispered as he held out the glass of water. Yu Tangchun nodded and reached out, taking the glass of water, sipping slowly as Chen Yuzhi shook out one of the antibiotic pills and one of Yu Tangchun’s throat medication, holding them out to Yu Tangchun.
“Here, Boss Yu. Take these” he instructed. Yu Tangchun looked over at him and reached out, taking the pills from him before popping them in his mouth and swallowing them with a gulp of water. He then placed the glass down before he let out a heavy sigh.
“Hurts” he murmured. Zhan Junbai and Chen Yuzhi looked at him in concern.
“What hurts?” they asked at the same time. Yu Tangchun pointed to his throat and then his chest.
“It hurts” he repeated. Chen Yuzhi nodded.
“I bet. Why don’t we lie down and rest, Boss Yu?” he suggested. Yu Tangchun looked at him before he nodded.
“Alright” he agreed as he slowly stood to his feet, Zhan Junbai reaching out and grabbing his arm to steady him.
“Thank you” he whispered. Zhan Junbai nodded and slowly guided him over to the bed, moving back the blankets, helping him into the bed before tucking him in. He made sure that the pillows were propped up underneath his head so that it was elevated before he looked at Yu Tangchun.
“Do you need anything else?” he asked. Yu Tangchun shook his head as Chen Yuzhi looked at Zhan Junbai.
“Executive, I may have something that will help soothe Boss Yu’s throat and chest” he stated. Zhan Junbai looked over at him and raised an eyebrow.
“You do?” he asked. Chen Yuzhi nodded and walked over to his doctor bag, opening it and rummaging around inside before he pulled out a small jar. He then walked over to Zhan Junbai and held it out.
“It’s an ointment made with menthol that’ll help clear airways. It might help a little” he explained. Zhan Junbai reached out and took the jar, looking at it before looking at Yu Tangchun.
“I’ll try anything” he murmured. Chen Yuzhi looked at him in shock before he shook himself and smiled slightly.
“Well, give it a try. I’ll be back in a few days to see how he’s doing” he stated. Zhan Junbai looked over at him and nodded.
“Thank you, Dr. Chen” he murmured. Chen Yuzhi smiled.
“Of course” he replied as he walked back over to his doctor bag, closing it up before heading out of the room, leaving Zhan Junbai and Yu Tangchun alone. Once he was gone, Zhan Junbai looked over at Yu Tangchun, who looked just as small and weak as he did the time he got stabbed protecting Zhan Junbai in the tailor shop. He then sighed before he looked at the jar of ointment in his hand and hummed.
“I suppose we can give this a try” he murmured as he opened up the lid to the jar, his eyes suddenly watering at the pungent smell.
“I can see why Chen Yuzhi said it can help clear airways” he mused before he placed the jar down and reached out, slowly unbuttoning the top of Yu Tangchun’s changshan until his chest was revealed.
“What are you doing?” Yu Tangchun croaked, his voice barely above a whisper. Zhan Junbai looked at him and smiled as he took some of the pungent ointment Chen Yuzhi gave him onto his fingertips and began rubbing it into Yu Tangchun’s chest.
“Just trying something that will hopefully help you sleep” he replied. Yu Tangchun hummed but said nothing, allowing Zhan Junbai to continue rubbing the ointment into his chest until he thought it was well absorbed. He then carefully closed Yu Tangchun’s changshan before he reached out and brushed Yu Tangchun’s bangs out of his face.
“Get some rest, Tangchun” he murmured, causing Yu Tangchun, who had drifted off for a moment, to crack open a tired eye.
“You too” he replied. Zhan Junbai looked at him in surprise as he smiled weakly.
“You’ve been taking care of me and have not had any time to rest yourself. Please rest, Executive Zhan” he begged. Zhan Junbai continued to stare at him before he smiled softly and nodded.
“Alright. Alright” he agreed as he turned and headed towards the door of the bedroom, pausing to look back at Yu Tangchun, who had drifted off to sleep again, before he smiled and headed out of the room, quietly shutting the door behind him.

Over the next couple of days, Yu Tangchun slowly recovered, thanks to both Zhan Junbai and Chen Yuzhi’s watchful eye. And as he slowly recovered, he and Zhan Junbai slowly began to grow closer…almost like how they were when they first met. They smiled at each other more, they seemed to laugh with each other more, Zhan Junbai was more than willing to drop whatever he was doing whenever Yu Tangchun wanted to do something, and all plans of revenge and domination of the city seemed to just fly out the window. Even Zhan Junbai’s servants seemed to notice that there was a difference between the two men, especially Zhan Junbai. He seemed softer, less harsh and angry, and seemed to smile more. Of course, Yu Tangchun was still keeping up the pretense that he had lost his memory, so whenever they went out, he would cling to Zhan Junbai’s arm and look around with wide eyes, causing Zhan Junbai to explain the different people and places to him. And to be honest, Yu Tangchun enjoyed these little outings because he got to experience the world sort of from Zhan Junbai’s point of view, which was a different view than his view of the world, but that was what made people…people. And it was nice.
~*~*~*~*~*~
One day, however, when Yu Tangchun was feeling better, he decided to head out by himself, just to get some fresh air. Zhan Junbai wasn’t particularly thrilled with that fact but he didn’t want to keep Yu Tangchun caged inside all day, so he agreed, causing Yu Tangchun to smile.
“I’ll be right back, I promise” he assured before he turned and headed out the door. Zhan Junbai smiled as he watched Yu Tangchun walk away before he walked over to the couch and sat down, picking up the book that Yu Tangchun had left on the coffee table, deciding to give it a read. As he was reading, his uncle, Zhan Tianqing, walked into his mansion, making him look up in surprise.
“Uncle. What are you doing here?” he asked. Zhan Tianqing glared at him.
“You haven’t been very proactive in taking over Jing City” he growled. Zhan Junbai sighed.
“Uncle…taking over Jing City was your idea, not mine” he murmured. Zhan Tianqing pointed a finger at him.
“Do not talk back to me, boy” he growled. Zhan Junbai raised an eyebrow as he placed the book down and slowly stood to his feet, looking at Zhan Tianqing with narrowed eyes.
“Are you threatening me, Uncle? In my own home?” he asked. Zhan Tianqing’s eyes widened and he pointed a finger at him.
“You—” he started.
“Executive Zhan?” a voice called out, making Zhan Tianqing turn and Zhan Junbai look up to see Yu Tangchun staring at them in “confusion”.
“Boss Yu” Zhan Junbai greeted as Zhan Tianqing frowned.
“I thought you said you were going to take care of him” he growled, pointing to Yu Tangchun, who just tilted his head at him.
“Executive Zhan, who is this?” he asked. Zhan Junbai said nothing and instead just held out his hand, Yu Tangchun taking that as an invitation to walk over to him, standing beside him.
“Boss Yu, this is my uncle, Zhan Tianqing” he introduced. Zhan Tianqing looked at him in confusion.
“What is going on here?” he asked. Zhan Junbai huffed.
“Boss Yu had a very bad case of pneumonia and lost his memory” he explained. Zhan Tianqing looked at Yu Tangchun and smirked.
“He lost his memory? So he doesn’t remember anything?” he asked. Zhan Junbai shook his head.
“I’m not sure” he replied. Zhan Tianqing smirked again.
“So he doesn’t remember what you did? To his family?” he sneered. Zhan Junbai’s eyes widened and he opened his mouth to scold his uncle when Yu Tangchun began to laugh, a low and dark chuckle that slowly grew in volume till it was a loud and almost hysterical cackle. Zhan Junbai and Zhan Tianqing looked at him with wide eyes as he looked at Zhan Tianqing.
“Oh, I haven’t forgotten what he’s done…I haven’t forgotten at all” he snarled. Zhan Junbai looked at him in horror as he pointed at Zhan Tianqing.
“But you…I know it was you who told him to do so” he declared. Zhan Tianqing’s eyes widened and he let out a snarl as he stormed forward until he was face to face with Yu Tangchun.
“You little bitch” he hissed. Yu Tangchun smiled darkly.
“Maybe so” he replied. Zhan Tianqing snarled and lashed out, grabbing Yu Tangchun by the throat, causing him to let out a surprised cry.
“Uncle!” Zhan Junbai exclaimed but Yu Tangchun just lashed out with two fingers, jabbing Zhan Tianqing sharply in the wrist around his throat, causing him to let out a cry of pain and release Yu Tangchun. Yu Tangchun took a deep breath before he glared at Zhan Tianqing before he took a step forward and quickly and precisely jabbed Zhan Tianqing in his twelve chi points, watching with a satisfied smile as Zhan Tianqing collapsed to the ground, paralyzed and unconscious. He continued to stare at Zhan Tianqing before he felt a cough bubbling up in his chest and his eyes widened before he began to cough, the harshness of the cough so surprising that he stumbled back, only to be caught by strong arms.
“I’ve got you” Zhan Junbai whispered as he guided Yu Tangchun over to the couch, sitting him down.
“Deep breaths, deep breaths” he soothed, rubbing Yu Tangchun’s back, just as Qiu Ming walked into the room.
“Executive” he greeted. Zhan Junbai said nothing and motioned to Zhan Tianqing’s unconscious and paralyzed body, causing Qiu Ming to look over and raise an eyebrow.
“Have the servants send him back to the mansion and call a healer to look at him. Not Dr. Chen, but another doctor” Zhan Junbai ordered. Qiu Ming nodded and walked off, going to find some more servants to help him move Zhan Tianqing’s body out of the mansion, leaving Zhan Junbai and Yu Tangchun alone. Once they were alone, Zhan Junbai looked at Yu Tangchun almost accusingly before he grabbed Yu Tangchun by the wrist and dragged him upstairs to Yu Tangchun’s bedroom, shutting the door behind them once they were inside. He then released Yu Tangchun’s wrist, Yu Tangchun gently rubbing it as Zhan Junbai narrowed his eyes at him.
“So…you lied to me” he murmured. Yu Tangchun looked up at him and nodded.
“Yes” he replied. Zhan Junbai frowned.
“Why?” he demanded. Yu Tangchun smiled sadly as he walked over to his bed and sat down, sighing.
“Because…I liked the fantasy that we had going on when I was sick, when you thought I had lost my memory. You were…kind. You were gentle. You…you cared. You weren’t so fixated on the opium and on ruling Jing City. It was just the two of us and…I wanted it to stay like that for a while” he murmured. Zhan Junbai frowned.
“Who says they can’t?” he asked. Yu Tangchun looked at him.
“You’re going to have to give up everything you worked for” he argued. Zhan Junbai looked at him.
“But if I give all that up, will you stay?” he asked. Yu Tangchun blinked and looked back at him in surprise.
“You…you mean it?” he replied. Zhan Junbai huffed.
“I stopped wearing my watch for you” he declared. Yu Tangchun frowned in confusion before he looked at Zhan Junbai’s wrist and realized that the man really wasn’t wearing the watch that had been plaguing his dreams and thoughts for the past how many years.
“Oh” he whispered, making Zhan Junbai chuckle.
“If I’m willing to stop wearing my watch for you…do you not think I’m willing to give up everything just to have you stay?” he asked. Yu Tangchun looked at him with wide eyes, a blush slowly creeping onto his cheeks, before he looked at Zhan Junbai.
“You know I can never forgive you for what you did, right?” he asked. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“I know” he replied before he walked over and reached out, taking Yu Tangchun’s hand in his, making Yu Tangchun look at him in surprise.
“Will you stay?” he asked. Yu Tangchun blinked before he laughed softly and gave Zhan Junbai’s hand a squeeze.
“Who else is going to take care of me?” he replied. Zhan Junbai blinked in surprise before he laughed as well. Yu Tangchun then looked up at him, holding up a finger.
“I have one condition however” he stated. Zhan Junbai looked down at him and nodded.
“Name it” he replied.
“Your uncle is never to step foot in this mansion ever again” Yu Tangchun declared. Zhan Junbai was quiet before he barked out a laugh and nodded.
“Done” he agreed. Yu Tangchun smiled, almost proudly, before he leaned forward and rested his head against Zhan Junbai’s torso, letting out a content hum. Zhan Junbai looked down at him and let out a fond chuff before he reached up and gently pet Yu Tangchun’s hair, both men still holding each other’s hand. Maybe Yu Tangchun pretending to lose his memory was a good thing, seeing as it gave both Yu Tangchun and Zhan Junbai their happy ending, of sorts. They would, of course, have to learn trust each other again, but they could do that. They had all the time in the world.
Inspired by this ask sent to me. If Yu Tangchun succeeded in killing Zhan Junbai's uncle, what do you think Zhan Junbai would have done?
As Yu Tangchun made his way towards Zhan Tianqing’s mansion, he felt his heart hammering in his chest. There were two ways that this…interaction, meeting, whatever the hell you wanted to call it…could end: 1) Yu Tangchun would actually succeed in putting a bullet between Zhan Tianqing like he had originally planned at the opera house or 2) he would be the one who would end up with a bullet between his eyes. He really hoped he would get to do the first option because he had quite the long list of people to avenge, mainly his family and Zining, his “silly little girl”. He then took a deep breath before he walked into the mansion, walking over to Zhan Tianqing, who glared up at him.
“What are you doing here?” he demanded. Yu Tangchun smiled.
“To pay you a visit” he replied. Zhan Tianqing tsked and waved a hand.
“Don’t be such a pussy” he grumbled before he snapped his fingers, a servant immediately walking over to him.
“Take him to the mansion. My eyes will be polluted” he ordered. The servant nodded and reached out to grab Yu Tangchun by the arm, but Yu Tangchun stepped sided him and looked at Zhan Tianqing.
“Commander Zhan. I have some information about Executive Zhan that I wish to speak to you about” he stated. Zhan Tianqing took a deep breath before he looked over at him and raised an eyebrow.
“You? You don’t deserve it” he declared before he pointed at the servant.
“Let him out” he ordered. The servant nodded and moved to grab Yu Tangchun again when Yu Tangchun looked at Zhan Tianqing.
“Don’t you want to know what Executive Zhan says about you and how he treats you in private?” he asked, raising a calm eyebrow. Zhan Tianqing looked over at him and Yu Tangchun smiled slightly, he had the bastard’s attention. Zhan Tianqing then waved the servant away, the servant bowing before he turned and walked out. Once he was gone, Zhan Tianqing huffed and looked at Yu Tangchun.
“Tell me. What does Junbai say about me usually?” he asked. Yu Tangchun smiled and slowly walked towards him, like a cobra ready to strike.
“It seems like you really don’t trust Executive Zhan. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be interested in this topic” he mused. Zhan Tianqing scoffed.
“Excluding myself, I don’t trust anyone” he stated. Yu Tangchun tilted his head slightly.
“Are you worried about the bad things you’ve done before?” he asked before he pulled the Browning Zhan Junbai had given him out of his suit jacket, pointing it at Zhan Tianqing. Zhan Tianqing raised an eyebrow and instead of attacking Yu Tangchun like he thought he would, he slowly stood to his feet, smirking.
“You’re really going to kill me?” he asked, almost amused.
“I missed the first time” Yu Tangchun snarled as he pulled the slide back on the gun, raising it so that the muzzle was positioned right between Zhan Tianqing’s eyes.
“I won’t miss again” he promised. Zhan Tianqing raised an eyebrow in surprise.
“So you were the mysterious assassin…not that girl that I killed” he mused. Yu Tangchun snarled.
“That “girl” was my sister” he hissed, his hand beginning to tremble with anger and a little bit of fear. Zhan Tianqing noticed the slight tremble and smirked.
“What, scared to pull the trigger?” he sneered. Yu Tangchun scoffed.
“You wish” he growled. Zhan Tianqing then sneered as he took a step forward, the Browning’s muzzle pressed against his forehead.
“Go ahead then. Pull the trigger” he ordered. Yu Tangchun’s eyes widened slightly before his eyes steeled and his finger tightened on the trigger.

Meanwhile, Zhan Junbai was speeding towards his uncle’s manor, cursing Yu Tangchun under his breath.
“That idiot…what is he doing? Is he trying to get himself killed?” he growled before he looked at Qiu Ming.
“Step on it” he ordered. Qiu Ming nodded and stepped on the gas, speeding towards the Zhan Mansion. When he arrived, Zhan Junbai quickly got out of the car and started almost sprinting towards the mansion, only to come to a halt when a gunshot echoed through the air, his eyes widening in horror.
“Tangchun” he breathed before he took off towards the mansion again. When he entered the mansion, his eyebrows furrowed in confusion to see guards restraining Yu Tangchun while other guards armed with guns surrounded him.
“What happened?” he demanded.
“H-He shot Commander Zhan!” one of the guards exclaimed, pointing to Yu Tangchun. Zhan Junbai frowned.
“He what?” he asked, confusion on his face, before he turned and looked down, his eyes widening in shock at the sight of his uncle on the floor, dead, with a single bullet in between his eyes; shot point blank.
“What the fuck?” he whispered before he looked over at Yu Tangchun, who was just staring at Zhan Tianqing’s dead body, his face expressionless.
“What should we do with him, Executive Zhan?” one of the guards asked, looking over at Zhan Junbai, who looked away from Yu Tangchun and over at him.
“With who?” he demanded. One of the guards then jabbed Yu Tangchun in the back, causing the young opera singer to hiss in pain.
“Him” he answered. Zhan Junbai was silent before he snarled and reached out, grabbing Yu Tangchun roughly by the arm.
“I’ll take care of him” he growled before he wrenched Yu Tangchun out of the guards’ arms and dragged him away, dragging him out of the mansion. He then dragged Yu Tangchun towards the car, where Qiu Ming was waiting for them, and shoved him inside before getting in after him.
“Drive, Qiu Ming” he growled. Qiu Ming glanced back at him, noting his tone of voice, but said nothing as he put the car into drive and pulled away from the mansion. In the car, Yu Tangchun and Zhan Junbai sat in tense silence, Zhan Junbai continuously looking over at Yu Tangchun, who just kept his eyes down, still holding the Browning in his hand. Zhan Junbai then looked down at the gun before he held out his hand.
“Give me that” he ordered. Yu Tangchun looked over at him and raised an eyebrow before he handed over the gun, Zhan Junbai snatching it from him. He flinched slightly as he lowered his gaze again, clasping his hands together as they sat in silence once more.

When they arrived at Zhan Junbai’s mansion, Zhan Junbai got out first before grabbing Yu Tangchun by the wrist, dragging him into the mansion and up the stairs to Yu Tangchun’s bedroom. The minute Yu Tangchun was in the bedroom, Zhan Junbai slammed the door shut before he grabbed Yu Tangchun and slammed him into the door, making him cry out in pain.
“What were you doing?! Were you trying to get yourself killed?!” he roared. Yu Tangchun looked at him before he huffed and shoved him away, walking past him.
“I was avenging my family” he growled. Zhan Junbai shook his head as he reached out and grabbed Yu Tangchun’s wrist, spinning him around so that he was facing him.
“You could have been KILLED! Don’t you get that?!” he shouted. Yu Tangchun shook his head, tears coming to his eyes now as he wrenched his arm out of Zhan Junbai’s grasp.
“HE KILLED MY FAMILY! HE KILLED MY SISTER! DID YOU THINK I WAS JUST GOING TO LET HIM LIVE?! HE DESERVED TO BE SHOT!” he screamed.
“AT THE RISK OF YOUR OWN LIFE?!” Zhan Junbai roared. Yu Tangchun shook his head.
“I’M GOING TO DIE ANYWAYS; MY LIFE MEANS NOTHING!” he screamed. At that statement, Zhan Junbai and Yu Tangchun stared at each other, both men panting heavily before Zhan Junbai took a deep breath and composed himself, looking into Yu Tangchun’s eyes.
“You think your life means nothing…but it does. It means something to me. You’re important to me, Yu Tangchun” he declared. Yu Tangchun looked at him in shock as he let out a heavy sigh and turned, walking over and sitting on the edge of the bed. Yu Tangchun stared at him for a moment before he took walked over and sat down beside him, both men sitting in silence before Yu Tangchun felt tears well up in his eyes and he began to cry. Was he crying out of relief that he finally avenged his family and Zining or was he crying because he and Zhan Junbai had screamed at each other, something that they had never done before? He didn’t know, but he was feeling too many emotions at the present moment, so he did what any normal person did when they were feeling overwhelmed and that was cry. Zhan Junbai looked over at him in shock before his face softened and he reached out, pulling Yu Tangchun in for a hug, holding him gently, like he was a fragile porcelain doll, and one wrong move would cause him to break. Yu Tangchun curled into him, burying his face into his neck as he continued to sob, Zhan Junbai slowly reaching up to gently stroke his hair as he hushed him. After a while, when Yu Tangchun calmed down, he sniffled and wiped his eyes before he looked up at Zhan Junbai.
“I’m sorry” he whispered. Zhan Junbai frowned as he looked at him, raising an eyebrow.
“For what?” he asked. Yu Tangchun sniffled again.
“For killing your uncle. He’s an asshole and he deserved what he got but still…he’s still…he was still your family” he murmured. Zhan Junbai looked at him before he huffed.
“You’re right…he deserved what he got for killing your family and for killing Zining. She was such a sweet girl; she didn’t deserve what he did to her” he mused. Yu Tangchun nodded in agreement before he looked at Zhan Junbai.
“He also deserved it for forcing you to execute his plan to murder my family” he added. Zhan Junbai’s eyes widened as he turned to look at Yu Tangchun.
“You…how did you—” he started when Yu Tangchun reached out and took Zhan Junbai’s wrist in his hands, showing him the watch that his uncle had gotten him for his eighteen birthday.
“This watch…this watch has been engrained into my subconscious since that day…when I saw it again in your mansion when we first met…I knew at once that it was the same watch. I just…I didn’t want to believe it. That the man who had been so kind to me…could be so cruel” he whispered. Zhan Junbai was quiet, stunned that Yu Tangchun knew who he was…since the beginning.
“Why didn’t you…why didn’t you kill me?” he asked. Yu Tangchun laughed softly.
“Oh, believe me, I tried. But then I realized…that killing you would be pointless. You weren’t the mastermind behind the killing; you were just the good toy solider following orders. So, I figured…why not stop the evil at the source? That way people will stop getting hurt…because your uncle…has hurt a lot of people. Not just my family” he murmured. Zhan Junbai was quiet, just staring at him in awe; who knew that behind Yu Tangchun’s pretty face and gentle voice was the mind of a cunning man who seemed to know a lot more than he let on. After a while, Yu Tangchun sighed heavily.
“What are we going to do now?” he murmured. Zhan Junbai was lost in thought before he blinked, bringing himself back to reality as he realized that his uncle was dead and that he was finally free to do whatever the hell he wanted. He then laughed softly before he looked down at Yu Tangchun.
“I think…we should leave” he declared. Yu Tangchun frowned and looked up at him.
“Leave?” he repeated. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“Yes, as in leave Jing City” he replied. Yu Tangchun looked at him in shock.
“You’re…you’re willing to leave the opium and Jinma Hall behind? Didn’t you want to take over Jing City?” he asked. Zhan Junbai laughed softly and shook his head.
“Jinma Hall, the opium, ruling Jing City…all that was my uncle’s idea. His plan. Not mine” he stated as he looked off into the distance.
“You forget that my childhood was not a normal one by any means…I was an orphan, my uncle adopted me, trained me and raised me to be a soldier without ever considering that…I was just a child. I never got to experience the world…like everyone else” he murmured. Yu Tangchun looked at him for a moment before he looked down at Zhan Junbai’s wrist that he was still holding in his hands. As he stared at it, an idea came to mind and he quickly undid the watch from around Zhan Junbai’s wrist, making Zhan Junbai look down at him in confusion.
“What are you doing?” he asked. Yu Tangchun huffed.
“Well, if you really want to be free of your uncle, you can start by getting rid of this watch” he declared before he handed it to Zhan Junbai.
“It’s yours to do with it what you wish” he stated. Zhan Junbai took the watch and looked at it, once so proud to own it but now…he was just disgusted with it. He then placed it on the bedside table and huffed before he looked back at Yu Tangchun.
“Come with me” he insisted. Yu Tangchun looked at him with wide eyes.
“Are you sure?” he breathed. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“I think it would be good for both of us to get away” he stated. Yu Tangchun said nothing and looked away for a moment before he looked back at him.
“How are we going to get away? Jiang Yuelou probably knows that you’re San Ye…and you can’t escape him” he stated. Zhan Junbai chuckled.
“Maybe…but that doesn’t mean I can’t divert the blame to someone else. I’ve done that this entire time…nothing can stop me from doing it again” he declared. Yu Tangchun frowned.
“Who are you going to place the blame on this time?” he asked. Zhan Junbai gave him a look, as if the answer was obvious. Yu Tangchun looked at him in shock.
“Your uncle? But…he’s dead!” he exclaimed. Zhan Junbai smiled.
“Which is why it’s perfect” he explained. Yu Tangchun shook his head.
“I don’t…I don’t quite understand” he murmured. Zhan Junbai chuckled.
“If I pin my uncle being the mastermind “San Ye” and all criminal activity suddenly stops because he’s dead…Jiang Yuelou will never be the wiser and we can leave without any problem” he explained. Yu Tangchun looked at him before he sighed and nodded slightly.
“I hope you know what you’re doing” he murmured. Zhan Junbai smiled before he leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss to his forehead.
“Don’t I always?” he replied. Yu Tangchun huffed.
“Sometimes I wonder” he murmured, slightly stunned by the fact that Zhan Junbai had just kissed his forehead. Zhan Junbai chuckled before he took a deep breath and reached out, cupping Yu Tangchun’s face in his hand, making Yu Tangchun look at him in shock.
“I’m sorry” he whispered. Yu Tangchun frowned, and Zhan Junbai sighed.
“For what I did to your family. I’m sorry” he elaborated. Yu Tangchun’s eyes widened before he looked down, tears coming to his eyes at the mention of his family. Zhan Junbai then gently stroked Yu Tangchun’s cheek with his thumb as he leaned forward and rested his head against his.
“Forgive me” he whispered. Yu Tangchun sniffled as tears streamed down his face before he let out a shuddery breath and pulled away, looking into Zhan Junbai’s eyes.
“It might take some time for me to full forgive you but…I’m willing to try” he murmured. Zhan Junbai smiled slightly.
“I understand” he replied. Yu Tangchun smiled as well before he and Zhan Junbai rested their heads together again, just breathing together as one.

A few months later, as Chen Yuzhi and Jiang Yuelou were in Chen Yuzhi’s clinic, Jiang Yuelou leaning against Chen Yuzhi’s desk as Chen Yuzhi was reading through a medical textbook, a mail courier walking into the clinic, holding a letter.
“Dr. Chen?” he called out. Chen Yuzhi looked up from his book before he stood up and walked over to the courier.
“That’s me” he stated. The courier handed him the letter before he turned and headed out of the clinic, Chen Yuzhi looking at the letter in confusion.
“Who’s it from?” Jiang Yuelou asked. Chen Yuzhi looked up from the letter at him before he shook his head.
“I’m not sure” he replied before he walked over to his desk and grabbed a letter opener, slicing open the envelope before pulling out a photo, his eyes widening in surprise.
“Jiang Yuelou” he breathed, Jiang Yuelou immediately at his side. Both men then looked at a sepia photo of Zhan Junbai, dressed in western clothing, sitting in a chair while Yu Tangchun, dressed in his changsan, stood beside him. Jiang Yuelou raised an eyebrow.
“Where was the letter sent from?” he asked. Chen Yuzhi hummed before he looked at the envelope.
“Hong Kong” he replied. Jiang Yuelou smirked.
“So they really did get away” he murmured. Chen Yuzhi looked over at him in surprise.
“You knew they were going to do this?” he asked. Jiang Yuelou shrugged.
“I had a feeling” he replied. Chen Yuzhi hummed.
“Are you going to go after him?” he asked, raising an eyebrow. Jiang Yuelou raised an eyebrow this time.
“Why would I? Zhan Tianqing is dead, and the opium business and crime has gone down in Jing City. Zhan Junbai might have been San Ye and he might have been in charge of a lot of things but…he was just the puppet. Tianqing was the puppet master. With Zhan Junbai in Hong Kong and Zhan Tianqing dead…Jing City is a lot safer” he declared. Chen Yuzhi hummed.
“And Boss Yu?” he asked. Jiang Yuelou chuckled.
“I think he’ll be fine. Zhan Junbai wouldn’t lay a hand on him, and Yu Tangchun can hold his own” he replied. Chen Yuzhi nodded before he looked at the photo of Yu Tangchun and Zhan Junbai and smiled.
‘Good for them’ he thought to himself before he put the photo down and went back to reading his medical book while Jiang Yuelou made himself comfortable on Chen Yuzhi’s desk again, both men enjoying the silence and the thought that Zhan Junbai and Yu Tangchun got a happy ending of sorts.
love your works! :3 If I could request something...? Maybe Yu Tangchun getting hurt and going to Zhan Junbai for help first, something like if it's not too much trouble and if you have the time. :) Thank you in advance if you're able to, but no pressure!
Anon, I know you wanted like Junchun hurt/comfort, but for some reason when I read this prompt, my brain immediately went to Zining getting hurt and Yu Tangchun running to Zhan Junbai to help him get revenge on whoever hurt his sister. So that's kind of what I did with this prompt
It was a quiet and peaceful morning as Yu Tangchun sat in the courtyard of the opera house, enjoying the cool breeze and a warm cup of tea. As he sipped at his tea, he didn’t realize that someone had slipped out of the opera house and walked over to him.
“Ge” a soft voice called out, making Yu Tangchun’s eyes widen before he stood up and turned, a soft smile on his face.
“Zining—” he started, only to let out a gasp of horror. His beautiful little sister’s face was covered in scratches and there were cuts and bruises all over her arms. He then quickly walked over to her and reached out, gently cupping Zining’s face in his hands, careful not to hurt her.
“Zining, Zining, who did this to you?” he whispered. Zining sniffled and she looked away, causing Yu Tangchun to growl.
“Zining, you have to tell me or I can’t help you” he urged. Zining shook her head.
“I can’t tell you…” she whimpered. Yu Tangchun let out a hiss of air before he carefully pulled her in for a hug, holding her tightly. Zining immediately wrapped her arms around him and buried her face in his shoulder, letting out a soft sob. Yu Tangchun held her and gently stroked her hair, murder beginning to course through his veins. How dare someone hurt his beautiful sister? He continued to hold Zining and pet her hair as she clung to him tightly, sobbing softly.
“Shh…shh Zining. Shh” he soothed before he pulled away and looked down at her.
“Don’t cry. Don’t cry. Ge will take care of this” he promised before he sighed.
“But first we need to go see someone about your injuries” he declared as he took her hand and led her out of the courtyard.
“But Ge, my face!” Zining exclaimed. Yu Tangchun paused before he turned and quickly headed back inside, grabbing one of his many fans before he walked back outside, handing it to Zining.
“Here” he instructed. Zining quickly flicked open the fan and covered her face with it as Yu Tangchun took her by the hand again and guided her away from the opera house.

A little while later, Yu Tangchun and Zining arrived before Zhan Junbai’s mansion door, Yu Tangchun knocking on the door. The door opened a moment later by Qiu Ming, who frowned in confusion.
“Boss Yu. What are you doing here?” he asked. Yu Tangchun let out a huff.
“Is Zhan Junbai here?” he replied. Qiu Ming nodded.
“Yes, he is” he stated. Yu Tangchun nodded.
“Get him for me. And a warm bowl of water and a towel” he instructed. Qiu Ming blinked in surprise before he nodded and stepped aside, allowing Zining and Yu Tangchun to step inside. Yu Tangchun immediately guided Zining over to the couch and sat her down, looking at her compassionately as Qiu Ming walked over to them, carrying a tray with a warm bowl of water and a towel on it.
“Thank you, Qiu Ming” Yu Tangchun thanked. Qiu Ming nodded and stepped back as Yu Tangchun looked at Zining and smiled softly.
“A-Ning, you’re safe here” he assured. Zining looked at him before she nodded slightly and lowered the fan, revealing her scratched face. Qiu Ming let out a soft gasp of shock and Yu Tangchun spun around, shooting him a glare before he looked back at Zining, whose face was lowered in shame.
“A-Ning, it’s okay. It’s okay. Ge’s gonna get you cleaned up now, okay?” he whispered before he reached out and took the towel and dipped it in the warm water, making sure to saturate it before wringing out the excess. He then reached out and began gently cleaning up Zining’s face, gently cleaning the rather deep scratches. Zining whimpered and turned her face away, Yu Tangchun immediately pulling his hand back, the towel bloody in his hand.
“Boss Yu?” a gentle voice called out, making Yu Tangchun look up to see Zhan Junbai walking down the stairs towards him, a concern look on his face.
“Junbai” he breathed as Zhan Junbai got closer to them. As he got closer and he noticed Zining’s scratched face, his eyes widened and he quickly walked over to the couch.
“A-Ning” he breathed before he looked down at Yu Tangchun.
“What happened to her?” he demanded. Yu Tangchun shook his head.
“I’m not sure. She came home looking like this” he replied before he looked at Zining.
“Zining, let me finish cleaning you up, okay?” he murmured. Zining turned to look at him and nodded, causing him to smile before he reached out and went back to cleaning up Zining’s face. As he cleaned up Zining’s face, Zhan Junbai watched with horror in his eyes as the towel that Yu Tangchun was using became more and more bloody as he continued to clean. Once the towel was too bloody to use anymore, Yu Tangchun placed it to the side before he looked Zining in the eyes.
“Zining…you have to tell me what happened. I’m not going to get mad, I promise” he murmured. Zining sniffled before she looked at Zhan Junbai and Qiu Ming.
“I’ll tell you…but I don’t want them here” she replied. Yu Tangchun nodded before he looked up at Zhan Junbai.
“You need to leave” he instructed. Zhan Junbai opened his mouth to argue but Yu Tangchun just shook his head, a sharp look in his eyes. Zhan Junbai sighed before he nodded, motioning for Qiu Ming to leave. Qiu Ming nodded and they both turned, heading out of the room so that Yu Tangchun and Zining could have some privacy. Once they were gone, Yu Tangchun reached out and took Zining’s hand in his.
“Now…what happened?” he asked. Zining sniffled and she let out a little whimper as she lowered her head.
“I was just singing for the customers as usual when the man’s wife came home. She’s a violent woman and extremely of any other woman in the house so when she saw me, she attacked me. I tried to fight her off, ge, I really tried, but she was a lot stronger than me! She accused me of being a slut and a seductress and accused me of trying to steal her husband!” she wailed. Yu Tangchun growled low in his throat before he took a deep breath and gently stroked the back of Zining’s hand with his thumb.
“Okay…okay, did she do anything else?” he asked gently. Zining frowned.
“What do you mean?” she replied. Yu Tangchun sighed.
“When wives think that an opera singer is trying to seduce their husbands, they normally attack them with anything close to them…did she attack you with anything?” he explained. Zining frowned before she looked at him.
“She…she threatened me with a knife? She…she said if I ever came back, she would slit my throat” she explained. Yu Tangchun shut his eyes and took a deep breath before he nodded again.
“Okay” he murmured, his blood beginning to boil. Zining then looked at him, a frown on her face.
“You’re…you’re not mad at me?” she whimpered. Yu Tangchun looked at her in shock.
“Why would I be mad at you? You did nothing wrong! You were just doing your job” he stated before he reached out and gently cupped her face in his hands.
“Zining, you did nothing wrong” he murmured. Zining sniffled and nodded as Yu Tangchun leaned forward and pressed a kiss to her forehead before he pulled back.
“I’m going to go talk to Executive Zhan. I’ll be right back, okay?” he murmured. Zining nodded as Yu Tangchun stood up and turned, heading out of the living room and into the next room, where Zhan Junbai was leaning against the wall, his hands in his pockets.
“How much did you hear?” he asked softly. Zhan Junbai sighed.
“Enough” he replied. Yu Tangchun gritted his teeth and shook his head.
“I can’t believe that…that witch would attack Zining like that!” he exclaimed. Zhan Junbai looked lazily over at him.
“Should I get Jiang Yuelou and have him arrest her for assault?” he asked. Yu Tangchun shook his head.
“No…no I want to take revenge myself. Zining is my sister. If she thinks that she can get away with hurting my sister, she’s got another thing coming” he growled before he looked at Zhan Junbai.
“Do you have your gun?” he asked. Zhan Junbai frowned and pushed off the wall, looking at him.
“What are you planning, Tangchun?” he whispered. Yu Tangchun smiled slightly.
“Nothing too serious…just a little scare, a little intimidation, that’s all” he replied. Zhan Junbai was quiet before he nodded.
“Do you want help?” he asked. Yu Tangchun looked at him with wide eyes.
“Are you sure?” he asked. Zhan Junbai chuckled darkly.
“Besides Jiang Yuelou, no one does intimidation better than me. Whatever you need, I’ll help” he declared. Yu Tangchun smiled softly.
“Thank you” he whispered. Zhan Junbai smiled as he reached out and wrapped an arm around Yu Tangchun, pulling him against him.
“If they hurt you or Zining, they hurt me, and that is unacceptable” he whispered before he leaned in and pressed a kiss to Yu Tangchun’s forehead. Yu Tangchun laughed softly before he looked at Zhan Junbai.
“I should go back to Zining…she really needs me right now” he murmured. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“Of course. We can go take our revenge whenever” he promised. Yu Tangchun nodded before he slipped out of Zhan Junbai’s arms and headed back into the main room, where Zining was looking around nervously. As he walked over to Zining, Zhan Junbai was watching as he sat down on the couch and reached out, wrapping a careful arm around Zining before pulling her against him, Zining immediately melting into him and burying her face in his shoulder. While Yu Tangchun was comforting Zining, Zhan Junbai let out a low growl; he meant what he told Yu Tangchun: anyone who hurt Yu Tangchun or Zining hurt him and that was unacceptable.

A little while later, after Yu Tangchun had taken Zining upstairs to rest, he walked over to Zhan Junbai, who was smiling softly at him.
“Ready?” he asked, holding out a Browning to him. Yu Tangchun took the gun, checked the magazine to make sure it was full and ready to use, then looked up at Zhan Junbai.
“Ready” he replied. Zhan Junbai nodded as he and Yu Tangchun headed towards the front door, Zhan Junbai glancing over at Yu Tangchun.
“Do you know who her client was?” he asked. Yu Tangchun nodded.
“A rich man by the name of Wen Zhanxing” he answered. Zhan Junbai growled low in his throat, making Yu Tangchun look over at him in confusion.
“You know him?” he asked. Zhan Junbai huffed.
“I know of him…and he’s a bit of a skirt chaser” he mused. Yu Tangchun’s eyes widened as he stopped walking and looked at Zhan Junbai.
“So…so you think—” he started when Zhan Junbai nodded.
“It’s entirely possible that the reason his wife attacked Zining is that she might have caught her husband trying to feel up or get too close to Zining” he explained. Yu Tangchun blinked before he snarled.
“That bastard” he hissed. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“I agree” he stated. Yu Tangchun then shook his head as he started walking again, Zhan Junbai rushing to keep up.
“I’m going to kill him. I’m going to do it and I’ll have no regrets doing so” he snarled. Zhan Junbai huffed.
“Let me do the killing if killing has to be done. I don’t mind getting my hands dirty” he stated. Yu Tangchun glanced over at him and smiled softly.
“Thank you” he thanked. Zhan Junbai smiled slightly and nodded.
“You’re welcome” he replied.

After leaving the Zhan Mansion, Yu Tangchun and Zhan Junbai arrived at the Wen Mansion, both men not even bothering to announce that they arrived before they stormed into the mansion, searching for Wen Zhanxing and his wife, finally coming upon them in their private sitting room. When they stepped into the private sitting room, Wen Zhanxing and his wife looked up at them with wide eyes.
“Who the hell are you?” Wen Zhanxing demanded. Yu Tangchun opened his mouth to snap at him when Zhan Junbai laughed softly.
“I’m surprised you don’t know who I am…considering I know you who are, Wen Zhanxing” he snarled, glaring at Wen Zhanxing. Wen Zhanxing looked at him for a moment before his eyes widened in realization and he let out a gasp.
“Executive Zhan Junbai…w-what are you doing here?” he asked.
“Your wife attacked a young opera singer by the name Zining” Yu Tangchun snarled. Wen Zhanxing frowned as his wife snarled.
“That bitch. She was trying to steal my husband!” she shrieked. Yu Tangchun growled and reached for the gun that was in his waistband when Zhan Junbai reached out and placed a hand on his arm.
“That bitch, ma’am, just so happens to be my daughter” he growled, causing Wen Zhanxing and his wife to look at him with wide eyes. Yu Tangchun looked over at him in surprise as well and he opened his mouth to say something when Zhan Junbai reached behind him and yanked the gun out of his waistband before pointing it at Wen Zhanxing. Wen Zhanxing and his wife flinched back at the sight of the gun as Zhan Junbai growled.
“If you thought you were going to get away with hurting Zining…you thought wrong” he growled before he turned the gun to Mrs. Wen, making her eyes widen.
“You attacked my daughter because you saw your husband trying to feel her up, right?” he snapped. Mrs. Wen’s eyes widened even farther as Zhan Junbai took a step towards her.
“Right?” he roared. Mrs. Wen shut her eyes and turned away as Yu Tangchun took a step forward, placing a hand on his arm.
“Junbai…that’s enough” he whispered. Zhan Junbai glanced over at him before he huffed and nodded before he looked back at Wen Zhanxing and his wife.
“If you ever come near Zining again, I will find out and I will hunt you down. Do you understand?” he snarled. Wen Zhanxing and his wife nodded before Zhan Junbai nodded.
“Good” he murmured before he turned and headed out of the room, Yu Tangchun shooting Wen Zhanxing and his wife a glare before he followed after Zhan Junbai.
~*~*~*~*~*~
After leaving the Wen Mansion, Zhan Junbai and Yu Tangchun headed back to the Zhan Mansion, which surprisingly wasn’t that far.
“Junbai…thank you” Yu Tangchun murmured, making Zhan Junbai look over at him and smile.
“Of course. I told you, if someone hurts you or Zining, they’re hurting me” he stated. Yu Tangchun huffed.
“But the part about you being Zining’s father?” he asked. Zhan Junbai shrugged.
“They didn’t need to know it was a lie” he replied. Yu Tangchun chuffed before he leaned over and pressed a kiss to Zhan Junbai’s cheek.
“Thank you, anyways” he murmured. Zhan Junbai smiled again and nodded as they continued back to his mansion. When they arrived, they headed inside and upstairs, where Zining was still resting, a peaceful look on her scratched face. Yu Tangchun then walked over and sat down on the edge of the bed, reaching out to gently stroke Zining’s hair. As he pet her hair, Zining stirred and opened her eyes, looking up at him sleepily.
“Ge” she murmured. Yu Tangchun smiled.
“Zining” he replied as Zining looked over at Zhan Junbai.
“Executive Zhan” she whispered. Zhan Junbai smiled softly.
“Zining” he greeted. Zining smiled before she looked back at Yu Tangchun.
“Where did you go?” she murmured. Yu Tangchun and Zhan Junbai glanced at each other before they looked back at her.
“Oh, just to speak to Mr. Wen. That’s all” Zhan Junbai replied. Zining’s eyes widened.
“You went to go see him? Why?!” she exclaimed, sitting up in bed, only to have Yu Tangchun reach out and gently push her back down.
“Shh, shh. He won’t be bothering you anymore. You’re okay” he soothed. Zining frowned.
“What do you mean?” he asked. Yu Tangchun laughed before he looked up at Zhan Junbai and smiled fondly.
“Oh, Executive Zhan just so happened to threaten him and tell him that if he ever went by you again, he’d hunt him down” he replied. Zining looked at Zhan Junbai with wide eyes and Zhan Junbai shrugged.
“What can I say? Anyone who’s important to Tangchun is important to me” he replied. Zining blinked in surprise before she smiled tearily.
“Thank you” she whimpered. Zhan Junbai nodded as Yu Tangchun looked at Zining and smiled softly.
“Get some rest, okay?” he murmured. Zining nodded, her eyes already slipping shut before she went back to sleep. Yu Tangchun looked at her and smiled fondly before he quietly stood to his feet and walked over to Zhan Junbai, standing before him.
“We should probably give Yuelou and Yuzhi a call at some point” he murmured. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“I’ll call them later. Just rest for now” he replied. Yu Tangchun nodded in agreement before he looked at Zhan Junbai and smiled softly.
“Thank you again, Junbai” he murmured. Zhan Junbai smiled as he reached out and wrapped his arms around Yu Tangchun, pulling him against him.
“Anything for you” he murmured. Yu Tangchun smiled and dipped his head, Zhan Junbai chuckling softly before he leaned forward and rested their foreheads together, soft smiles on both of their faces.
For @mahan734 who requested Zhan Junbai/Yu Tangchun, hurt/comfort + fluff
So in this fic, Zhan Junbai is not power hungry or a giant douche nozzle. He’s just the minister of finance who likes opera and likes Yu Tangchun.
Zhan Junbai hadn’t realized how sick Yu Tangchun really was until he saw it for himself. He had always heard him talking to Chen Yuzhi about his “throat disease” and he had seen the young doctor hand him small packages which he assumed was medicine, so he knew he was ill, but he had never really realized just how ill he was until one day, after he had performed a private show for Zhan Junbai when he smiled, a cough suddenly bubbled within his chest and he let out a horrible rattling cough. Zhan Junbai looked at him with concern and took a step forward.
“Boss Yu, are you alright?” he asked. Yu Tangchun nodded and quickly grabbed a handkerchief, covering his mouth as he let out another rattling cough, this one racking his body so hard that he almost collapsed. Zhan Junbai’s eyes widened and he quickly stepped forward, gently grasping Yu Tangchun by the shoulders before he led him over to a chair, sitting him down. Yu Tangchun continued to cough before he pulled the handkerchief away, looking at it quickly before folding it up so that no one else could see the contents. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) for him, Zhan Junbai saw the blood on the handkerchief and his eyes widened slightly before he looked over his shoulder.
“Qiu Ming! Bring us some water!” he barked before he looked back at Yu Tangchun.
“Boss Yu, shall I fetch Dr. Chen?” he asked gently. Yu Tangchun shook his head as he avoided Zhan Junbai’s gaze.
“I’m fine” he assured. Zhan Junbai huffed.
“Considering that you just coughed blood into your handkerchief, I don’t think you are” he replied. Yu Tangchun looked at him with wide eyes before he shook his head.
“Don’t call Dr. Chen, please. He’ll tell me to stop singing and I can’t—” he started before he began to cough again, an awful, body racking, chest rattling cough. Zhan Junbai huffed.
“I’m calling Dr. Chen” he declared, just as Qiu Ming walked into the room, carrying a tray with pitcher of water and some glasses on it. As soon as he placed the tray down, Zhan Junbai looked at him.
“Call Chen Yuzhi” he ordered. Qiu Ming nodded and quickly walked out of the room as Zhan Junbai walked over and grabbed a glass, filling it with water before walking over to Yu Tangchun.
“Boss Yu, here. Drink something” he murmured. Boss Yu nodded weakly and slowly lowered his hand, which Zhan Junbai noticed was covered with blood. He didn’t comment on it and carefully held the glass in his hand as he helped Yu Tangchun drink, since he was pretty sure that after all that coughing, Yu Tangchun would be too weak to hold the glass himself. Yu Tangchun drank greedily, which didn’t surprise Zhan Junbai at all, considering how badly he had been coughing. Once the glass was practically empty, Zhan Junbai placed it down before reaching into his pocket, pulling out a handkerchief to gently wipe the blood from Yu Tangchun’s lip. Yu Tangchun blushed, just as Chen Yuzhi walked into the mansion, making a beeline for them. Zhan Junbai quickly took a step back, allowing the doctor to kneel before Yu Tangchun, looking him over before checking his pulse. After checking his pulse, Chen Yuzhi sighed heavily.
“Tangchun, I told you, you have to stop singing. It’s going to get worse if you don’t” he murmured. Yu Tangchun shook his head.
“I’m sorry, Yuzhi, but I can’t” he replied, his voice weak. Chen Yuzhi huffed.
“Well then, since you won’t stop voluntarily, then I will make you stop. You’re not to sing for the next week or so until your throat isn’t so raw” he declared. Yu Tangchun’s eyes widened.
“Yuzhi, I can’t—” he started when Chen Yuzhi fixed him with a stern gaze.
“You can and you will” he ordered before he turned to look at Zhan Junbai.
“Executive Zhan, if it’s not too much trouble, will you watch after Boss Yu? I don’t trust himself to not listen to me” he explained. Zhan Junbai smiled and nodded.
“I will make sure he gets rest” he assured. Chen Yuzhi smiled slightly before he reached into his case and pulled out a few pills, shaking them into a little package before handing it to Zhan Junbai.
“Make sure he takes one every day. They won’t cure his disease, but they can at least soothe it” he explained. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“I’ll make sure he takes them” he promised. Chen Yuzhi nodded before he pushed himself to his feet, giving Yu Tangchun a stern look before he turned and walked out, leaving Yu Tangchun and Zhan Junbai alone.
“I apologize for that, Boss Yu, but seeing you cough up blood concerned me” Zhan Junbai explained. Yu Tangchun looked up at him, tears coming to his eyes.
“But if I can’t sing, what will I do?” he whimpered. Zhan Junbai smiled.
“I’m sure there are other things you can do. You seem like a capable man” he replied. Yu Tangchun huffed before he frowned.
“What about my job? If I can’t sing for a week, I’ll lose my job” he croaked. Zhan Junbai smiled.
“Would you like me to speak to your boss for you? Explain what’s going on?” he asked. Yu Tangchun shook his head.
“If he knows that I have this disease, then he’ll definitely make me stop singing. And if I stop singing then…I’ll stop existing” he murmured. Zhan Junbai was quiet before he held out his hand.
“Come Boss Yu. You should rest” he murmured. Yu Tangchun looked up at him with wide eyes.
“Are you sure it’s okay to stay here?” he asked. Zhan Junbai chuckled softly.
“Didn’t Dr. Chen instruct me to look after you? Of course it’s okay to stay here” he replied, still holding out his hand. Yu Tangchun huffed before he reached out and took Zhan Junbai’s hand, allowing him to help him up from the chair. They then headed upstairs to the second floor, Zhan Junbai leading him to one of the first bedrooms. He then opened the door and motioned for Yu Tangchun to step inside. Yu Tangchun nodded and stepped inside, looking around before turning to look back at Zhan Junbai, who was smiling at him.
“Is this room up to your standards, Boss Yu?” he asked. Yu Tangchun smiled and nodded.
“Yes, thank you” he thanked. Zhan Junbai smiled and dipped his head before he looked at Yu Tangchun.
“I’ll be taking tea in the garden later, if you would like to join me” he stated. Yu Tangchun blinked before he nodded.
“That sounds lovely” he replied. Zhan Junbai smiled.
“I’ll have someone fetch you” he stated before he turned and headed out of the room, leaving Yu Tangchun alone. Yu Tangchun looked around the room before he walked over to the window, smiling softly as he had a lovely view of the gardens.
~*~*~*~*~
A little while later, Zhan Junbai and Yu Tangchun sat in the garden, both men enjoying the cool weather and the warm tea as the cherry blossoms surrounded them.
“This is nice” Yu Tangchun murmured, making Zhan Junbai smile.
“I’m glad. How is the tea?” he asked. Yu Tangchun nodded.
“It’s good. It’s also soothing to my throat” he explained. Zhan Junbai smiled a little wider.
“Well then, this was a good idea, wasn’t it?” he asked. Yu Tangchun smiled and nodded. Zhan Junbai smiled again for probably the umpteenth time before he took a sip of his tea, both men enjoying each other’s company. After drinking their tea, Zhan Junbai and Yu Tangchun walked around the gardens, a soft smile on Yu Tangchun’s face. Just then, a gentle breeze blew through the garden, causing the cherry blossom petals to fall around them like rain and as Zhan Junbai looked over at Yu Tangchun, his eyes widened slightly. Yu Tangchun looked like something out of a fairytale, with the cherry blossoms falling around him as he lifted his hand to catch a few of them in it, a soft smile on his face. Zhan Junbai felt his heart flutter as he looked at Yu Tangchun, who looked over at him and frowned, his brows creasing delicately.
“Executive Zhan? Is something wrong?” he asked. Zhan Junbai’s eyes widened and he shook his head.
“No, no, nothing” he replied as he walked over to Yu Tangchun and reached up, gently plucking the cherry blossom petals from his hair. Yu Tangchun’s eyes widened slightly as he looked into Zhan Junbai’s eyes, which were fond as they looked back at him. They looked at each other for a moment before Yu Tangchun coughed and turned his head away, Zhan Junbai’s eyes slightly.
“Would you like some tea? Should we go back inside? Is it too cold?” he asked, concern in his voice. Yu Tangchun coughed again before he took a shuddering breath.
“I think I would like to rest, Executive Zhan” he replied. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“Of course, of course” he agreed, both men heading back to the mansion.
~*~*~*~*~
As they were walking back, Yu Tangchun looked over at Zhan Junbai.
“Executive Zhan” he started, making Zhan Junbai look back at him.
“Hmm?” he replied. Yu Tangchun smiled softly.
“I would like to do this again…if you don’t mind” he murmured. Zhan Junbai smiled brightly.
“Of course. Is there anything else you would like to do here?” he inquired. Yu Tangchun hummed.
“You like opera, don’t you?” he asked. Zhan Junbai nodded before he narrowed his eyes.
“But Dr. Chen said you’re not allowed to sing” he reminded. Yu Tangchun laughed softly.
“I won’t sing, you will. You’ve been practicing, haven’t you?” he asked. Zhan Junbai blinked before he nodded.
“A little” he replied. Yu Tangchun smiled.
“Well, with a little help from a trained opera singer, maybe you can get better and maybe even replace me one day when you decide to retire from the finance department” he explained. Zhan Junbai huffed.
“You know I’ll never be as good as you” he argued. Yu Tangchun smiled.
“Maybe, but you can at least come in second place” he teased. Zhan Junbai’s eyes widened and his mouth fell open in shock before he let out a loud, boisterous laugh, making Yu Tangchun smile. He liked it when Zhan Junbai laughed or smiled; it made him look younger and less…serious.
“Alright then, Boss Yu. My voice is in your hands” Zhan Junbai declared after he stopped laughing. Yu Tangchun nodded.
“I shall treat it well” he replied as they continued towards the mansion.
~*~*~*~*~
That evening, as Yu Tangchun was sleeping, his breath hitched, causing him to break out into a terrible coughing fit. He quickly sat up and covered his mouth as he continued to cough, just as the door burst open and light suddenly flooded the room.
“Boss Yu” a voice exclaimed before footsteps came running towards him. Yu Tangchun weakly opened an eye and found Zhan Junbai, dressed in his pajamas, kneeling before him, concern very evident in his eyes.
“Qiu Ming. Bring water and a cool compress!” Zhan Junbai shouted before he looked back at Yu Tangchu and reached up, gently rubbing his back.
“It’s okay, Boss Yu. It’s okay, just breathe. Just breathe” he soothed. Yu Tangchun nodded and slowly lowered his hand away from his mouth as he tried to take deep breaths without sending himself into another coughing spasm. As he lowered his hand, Zhan Junbai noticed that his hand was once again covered in blood. His heart clenched a little and as soon as Qiu Ming walked over with the cool compress and glass of water, he looked over at him.
“Get me a warm wet hand towel” he ordered. Qiu Ming nodded and placed the tray down on the bedside table before he walked out of the room. Once he left, Zhan Junbai reached into his pocket and pulled out the pouch of medicine Chen Yuzhi gave him, shaking out a pill before grabbing the glass of water.
“Boss Yu. Here” he murmured. Yu Tangchun reached out with his non-bloody hand and popped the pill into his mouth before Zhan Junbai carefully helped him drink. Yu Tangchun then swallowed the pill, just as Qiu Ming came back with the warm towel.
“Thank you” Zhan Junbai thanked, taking the towel from him before turning to look at Yu Tangchun.
“Let’s prop these pillows up first” he murmured, placing the towel down before he stood to his feet and carefully helped Yu Tangchun arrange his pillows so that his head would elevated. Yu Tangchun then laid back down, letting out a heavy sigh as Zhan Junbai reached over and gently placed the cool compress over his neck.
“Just to soothe the swelling” he soothed after Yu Tangchun jumped from the cool touch. Yu Tangchun nodded, relaxing a little as Zhan Junbai took the warm towel and began to gently clean Yu Tangchun’s bloody hand. Yu Tangchun’s eyes widened and he looked over at Zhan Junbai.
“Executive Zhan, you don’t—” he croaked when Zhan Junbai shook his head.
“Save your voice, Tangchun. I don’t mind” he replied as he continued to clean Yu Tangchun’s hand. Once the hand was cleaned, he looked over at Yu Tangchun and smiled softly.
“Better?” he asked softly. Yu Tangchun looked tiredly up at him and nodded. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“Good” he replied as he placed the bloody towel on the tray alongside the glass of water, reaching out to take the cool compress from Yu Tangchun’s neck.
“Get some rest, Tangchun” he murmured as he placed the compress on the tray and picked it up before standing to his feet and heading over to the door.
“Zhan Junbai” Yu Tangchun called out, making Zhan Junbai look back at him with a raised eyebrow. Yu Tangchun then smiled weakly.
“Thank you” he croaked. Zhan Junbai smiled and nodded before he headed out of the room, shutting off the light with his elbow as he left. Yu Tangchun then shut his eyes, taking a shuddering breath before he felt sleep come for him.
~*~*~*~*~
After what happened last night, Zhan Junbai kept a much closer eye on Yu Tangchun. He tried not to hover or to be too up in his business, but he was worried about the man. Every time he coughed, he looked as if a light wind brushed him, he would collapse like a falling cherry blossom petal. Thankfully Yu Tangchun took his care in stride, smiling every time Zhan Junbai asked if he was alright or if he needed something. He was definitely feeling better, so the medicine was working, which was good. Zhan Junbai’s overattentiveness was helpful as well, seeing how the minute he coughed the man was by his side in an instant.
“Executive Zhan, I’m fine” he assured after his last small cough that nearly sent Zhan Junbai into a panic. Zhan Junbai huffed before he nodded.
“If you say so” he murmured. Yu Tangchun nodded.
“I do say so. I’m fine. You’ll know if it gets worse” he replied before he smiled.
“So, shall we practice today?” he asked. Zhan Junbai blinked before he rubbed the back of his neck, suddenly nervous.
“Oh, uh, I suppose” he agreed. Yu Tangchun smiled as they headed into the sitting room, Zhan Junbai pulling out his music stand and sheet music as Yu Tangchun sat down on the chair closest to him.
“Whenever you’re ready” he assured. Zhan Junbai nodded before he looked down at his sheet music and began to sing. He had practiced this piece many times, so he knew its tune and words by heart, making it easy for him to sing in front of Yu Tangchun, who watched with a small smile but an intense gaze. After he finished singing, he looked over at Yu Tangchun, whose small smile widened and he politely clapped his hands.
“That was really good. I’m very impressed” he stated. Zhan Junbai smiled and dipped his head.
“It’s an honor to get such praise from you, Boss Yu” he murmured. Yu Tangchun smiled softly.
“I really don’t think I have much to critic. Have you taken lessons before?” he asked, looking at him. Zhan Junbai shook his head.
“I taught myself and listened to a lot of opera” he explained. Yu Tangchun’s eyes widened slightly before he smiled.
“I am impressed” he murmured. Zhan Junbai smiled before his eyes took on a delighted gleam.
“Maybe when your throat is better and Dr. Chen allows you to sing again, maybe you would like to sing with me?” he asked. Yu Tangchun blinked in surprise before he smiled.
“I would like nothing more” he replied.
~*~*~*~*~
A week went by quickly at Zhan Junbai’s mansion, since he and Yu Tangchun spent almost every waking moment with each other. They loved spending time with each other, but if you asked them what their favorite time spent together was, they’d both answer spending time out in the garden having tea. That time especially was Zhan Junbai’s favorite because whenever they’d walk around the garden, the breeze always seemed to know that they were out there and would gently blow through the trees to cause the cherry blossom petals to fall all around them, mainly around Yu Tangchun and make him look ethereal. Every time Zhan Junbai looked at him, he could feel his heart flutter and his words catch in his throat; he swore Yu Tangchun was the only person that made him feel this way…he wondered if he made Yu Tangchun feel the same way.
“Junbai” a soft voice called, shaking Zhan Junbai from his thoughts. He then looked over to see Yu Tangchun smiling softly at him.
“Is there something wrong? You’re staring” he explained. Zhan Junbai shook his head before he chuckled softly and walked over to him, standing before him.
“No…I’m just staring because you look ethereal with these petals falling all around you” he replied. Yu Tangchun’s eyes widened as a soft blush tinted his cheeks. Zhan Junbai smiled as he reached up and gently brushed the petals off of Yu Tangchun’s hair and shoulders, making him blush even deeper.
“Executive Zhan…this is inappropriate” he murmured. Zhan Junbai chuckled softly.
“Why? No one is here but us. No one can see” he replied. Yu Tangchun shook his head.
“But…you’re a high member of society and I’m just an opera singer—” he started when Zhan Junbai reached up and gently cupped his face in his hand, making him look up in shock.
“I don’t care about that. I just care about you” he murmured, gently rubbing Yu Tangchu’s cheek with his thumb. Yu Tangchun blushed and lowered his gaze, making Zhan Junbai shake his head.
“Don’t look away” he murmured. Yu Tangchun obeyed and slowly lifted his gaze to find Zhan Junbai staring fondly at him. He blinked in surprise; no one had looked at him like this before…only Zhan Junbai looked at him like this.
“Executive Zhan…are you sure you want to be with me” he asked, his voice soft and unsure, which was unusual for him. Zhan Junbai smiled and wrapped his arms around him, pulling him in for a gentle hug, careful not to send him into a coughing spasm.
“I’ve never been more sure than anything in my life” he replied. Yu Tangchun blinked at the confession before he carefully wrapped his arms around Zhan Junbai and buried his face in Zhan Junbai’s shoulder as cherry blossom petals fell around them. They didn’t know where this relationship would go but…as they pulled away and looked at each other, both men smiling softly at the other…they could feel like it was going to be something good and new. For the both of them.
Can you do a fix-it for Yu Tangchun and Zhan Junbai? Their story is so too horrific. Boss To deserves better and Zhan Junbai should have a second chance without his uncles's interference.
I hope this is what you wanted anon! I tried my best to give them a somewhat happy ending because they too deserved a happy ending.
Yu Tangchun didn’t realize how badly he didn’t think through his plan to shoot Zhan Tianqing until he shot the man in the arm and Zining had ended up grabbing the gun when he dropped it. The minute he saw Zining held by Zhan Tianqing’s men, Zhan Tianqing pointing a gun at Zining’s head, his body reacted without thinking and he ran forward, stepping in front of the girl he called his sister as Zhan Tianqing pulled the trigger, hitting him in the deltoid muscle. Zining let out a scream as he collapsed to the ground, crimson blood blossoming out from his wound like a bloody rose, while Zhan Junbai ran forward, murder in his eyes.
“Uncle, what have you done?! Are you mad?!” he roared. Zhan Tianqing frowned in surprise at his anger.
“What are you getting so angry for? He deserved it for stepping in front of the assassin” he replied as he raised his gun again, pointing it at Zining, who was cradling Yu Tangchun in her arms. However, before he could even think about firing, Zhan Junbai stepped in front of her, glaring at him.
“Don’t you think you’ve caused enough trouble this evening, Second Uncle?” he hissed. Zhan Tianqing frowned and narrowed his eyes at him.
“What is wrong with you?” he demanded. Zhan Junbai shook his head before he pointed away from him.
“Please leave” he ordered. Zhan Tianqing opened his mouth to argue when Zhan Junbai snatched the gun out of his hand and pointed it at him.
“Leave!” he roared. Zhan Tianqing looked at him with wide eyes before he huffed and turned, walking away from him. While he walked away, Qiu Ming stepped forward, concern on his face.
“Sir” he started as Zhan Junbai looked over at him.
“Call Chen Yuzhi” he ordered. Qiu Ming nodded and quickly rushed off as Zhan Junbai knelt down beside Zining and Yu Tangchu, looking Yu Tangchun over with fear in his eyes.
“Tangchun. Tangchun” he breathed, reaching out to touch but holding back. Zining looked at him before she gently lifted Yu Tangchun into his arm, Zhan Junbai immediately cradling him to his chest.
“Tangchun. Tangchun” he breathed. Yu Tangchun gasped and cracked open his eyes to see Zhan Junbai looking down at him.
“Junbai” he croaked, weakly reaching up to touch Zhan Junbai’s face. Zhan Junbai quickly reached up and grasped Yu Tangchun’s hand, holding it tightly.
“I’m here. I’m right here, Tangchun” he assured, just as Chen Yuzhi came running towards them, his medical kit in hand.
“Executive Zhan! Boss Yu!” he exclaimed, quickly kneeling down beside Zhan Junbai and Yu Tangchun. He didn’t even have to look at Yu Tangchun before he looked at Zhan Junbai.
“He needs to get to a hospital. He’s going to lose a lot of blood if we don’t” he stated. Zhan Junbai nodded and stood to his feet, cradling Yu Tangchu in his arms. He then quickly headed towards his car, Chen Yuzhi and Qiu Ming following after him.
~*~*~*~*~
At the hospital, Zhan Junbai and Qiu Ming were waiting out in the waiting room while Chen Yuzhi and a few other doctors were working on trying to save Yu Tangchun’s life. While the bullet wasn’t close to his heart, it was still dangerous for it to be in his body and especially with his throat disease, it was going to make recovery a bitch. But thankfully they were able to remove the bullet and when he stepped out of the emergency room, Zhan Junbai looked at him with wide eyes.
“Dr. Chen. Is he—” he started. Chen Yuzhi smiled and nodded.
“He’s going to be fine. Recovery might be a little longer than usual, due to his throat disease. But I’ll leave him in your care” he stated. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“I’ll look after him” he assured. Chen Yuzhi nodded.
“Good” he agreed before he turned and headed back inside. Once he was gone, Zhan Junbai let out a heavy sigh and pinched the bridge of his nose when he felt something heavy on his wrist. He then pulled his hand away from his face and looked down to see the watch that Zhan Tianqing had given him when he was younger. Upon seeing it, he felt a surge of anger and he quickly took it off before handing it to Qiu Ming.
“Get rid of it” he ordered. Qiu Ming frowned.
“But sir…your uncle—” he started when Zhan Junbai turned and glared at him. Qiu Ming quickly shut his mouth and dipped his head before he slipped out of the hospital, leaving Zhan Junbai alone. He let out another heavy sigh before he walked over to one of the chairs and sat down, placing his head in his hands. As he sat there, he heard the soft clicking of heels nearing him, so he looked up to see Zining smiling hesitantly at him, tears in her eyes.
“Executive Zhan” she greeted, her voice soft. Zhan Junbai blinked before he slowly stood to his feet.
“Miss Zining” he murmured. Zining smiled before she motioned to the emergency room.
“Is he—” she started when Zhan Junbai nodded, smiling softly, just like how Chen Yuzhi had smiled softly at him.
“He’ll be okay. Dr. Chen and the other doctors were able to remove the bullet” he explained. Zining nodded slowly, letting out a relieved sigh before she nearly collapsed. Thankfully Zhan Junbai rushed forward and caught her, gently sitting her down in one of the chairs as he knelt before her.
“Miss Zining. Are you alright?” he asked, concerned. Zining nodded.
“I’m alright. Just relieved” she answered before she looked over at him and smiled.
“Like I’m sure you are” she murmured. Zhan Junbai blinked before he cleared his throat and nodded.
“Yes. Yes I am” he admitted. Zining looked at him for a moment before she smiled.
“Executive Zhan—” she started, making Zhan Junbai look at her.
“Yes?” he replied. Zining smiled.
“Thank you” she whispered. Zhan Junbai frowned.
“For what?” he asked. Zining smiled again.
“For standing up to your uncle. For me and ge” she explained. Zhan Junbai blinked again before he nodded.
“Of course” he replied. Zining smiled softly before she stood to her feet, Zhan Junbai standing as well.
“Executive Zhan, please take good care of my brother” she requested. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“I will” he promised. Zining nodded before she turned and walked away, her heels softly clicking on the tile floors. Zhan Junbai watched her leave before he sighed and rubbed his temples.
‘What am I going to do about uncle?’ he thought to himself.
~*~*~*~*~
A few hours later, when Yu Tangchun was released from the hospital, Zhan Junbai had him brought back to the mansion and placed in his room. As he laid in bed, Zhan Junbai sat beside him, holding his hand and gently rubbing circles into the back of it. After a while, Yu Tangchun began to stir, making Zhan Junbai look down at him with slightly wide eyes.
“Tangchun” he whispered. Yu Tangchun let out a soft groan and cracked open an eye, looking up at him.
“Mother?” he whispered. Zhan Junbai smiled fondly and shook his head.
“No, it’s me, Zhan Junbai” he replied. Yu Tangchun frowned and Zhan Junbai wondered if he was still high off of the drugs he was given.
“How are you feeling?” he asked gently. Yu Tangchun shook his head.
“Tired. I’m so tired, mother” he whispered. Zhan Junbai sighed heavily before he reached up and gently stroked Yu Tangchun’s head.
“Just rest then, Tangchun. You’ll feel better in the morning” he murmured. Yu Tangchun buried himself deeper under the cover, letting out a sigh.
“Do you not remember your own son’s name, mother?” he murmured. Zhan Junbai frowned as he looked down at him.
“Is your name not Yu Tangchun?” he asked softly. Yu Tangchun shook his head as he turned away from Zhan Junbai.
“My name is Fu Cheng” he murmured before the drugs took him and pulled him back under. Zhan Junbai, on the other hand, was left stunned, a cold chill in his blood. He looked down at the man in the bed, eyes widening slightly, before he stood to his feet and rushed out of the room, not before shutting the door quietly behind him. He then quickly headed downstairs and sat down in his chair, running a hand through his hair.
‘Fu Cheng…the son of the man uncle sent me to kill…the missing boy’ he thought to himself before he shook his head.
“He’s here…in my home” he murmured before he groaned; now this made everything so much more complicated. He sat in his chair a while, letting everything stew over in his brain before he sighed heavily. Thinking about it tonight wasn’t going to make this situation any better so he might as well go to bed and figure it out in the morning.
~*~*~*~*~
The next morning, Yu Tangchun awoke from his drug-filled slumber to find Zhan Junbai sitting beside him, looking lost in thought.
“Junbai?” he croaked, causing Zhan Junbai to jump before he turned and looked down at him.
“Sorry. How are you feeling, Tangchun?” he started before he paused and looked into Yu Tangchun’s eyes.
“Or should I say…Fu Cheng?” he murmured. Yu Tangchun opened his mouth to reply when his blood suddenly ran cold and he looked back at Zhan Junbai with horrified eyes.
“How did you—” he started when Zhan Junbai smiled slightly.
“You were talking in your sleep. I think the drugs caused you to reveal your secret” he explained. Yu Tangchun quickly sat up, only to gasp in pain and clutch at his shoulder, which had been bandaged from surgery. Zhan Junbai quickly reached out; his grip gentle as he grabbed Yu Tangchun’s arm.
“Careful, careful. You don’t want to pull the stiches” he murmured. Yu Tangchun looked over at him and shook his head.
“If you knew who I was, why didn’t you kill me? Like you did my family?” he hissed. Zhan Junbai looked at him before he sighed and released his arm, placing his hands in his lap.
“Because you’re my friend. And I wouldn’t hurt my friend” he replied. Yu Tangchun then motioned to the window.
“But what about all the other people whose lives you’ve ruined?” he demanded. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“You’re right, I did hurt them” he agreed before he looked into Yu Tangchun’s eyes.
“But I couldn’t hurt you” he admitted. Yu Tangchun blinked, stunned by the confession, before he sighed.
“So what now? You know my secret…what are you going to do with me?” he asked, a slight tremble in his voice. Zhan Junbai looked over at him and raised an eyebrow.
“What would you like me to do with you? You’re not my prisoner, Fu Cheng. Dr. Chen just gave me instructions to look after you until your injury heals and Zining asked that I take good care of you” he explained. Yu Tangchun looked at him in surprise.
“Zining…Zining’s not dead?” he breathed. Zhan Junbai chuckled softly as he reached out and gently tapped the bandage on Yu Tangchun’s shoulder.
“Where do you think this came from? You moved in front of her and Second Uncle shot you” he explained. Yu Tangchun shook his head.
“No, I remember that. But he didn’t…he didn’t take a second shot?” he whispered. Zhan Junbai shook his head.
“I wouldn’t let him” he replied. Yu Tangchun blinked in surprise before he looked down and noticed that the watch Zhan Junbai normal wore wasn’t on his wrist.
“Your watch…it’s gone” he breathed. Zhan Junbai looked down at his wrist and hummed.
“Yes, I had Qiu Ming get rid of it” he replied. Yu Tangchun shook his head.
“But why? It was a gift, wasn’t it?” he asked. Zhan Junbai sighed.
“It was…but after what he did to you…I didn’t want to be associated with him anymore” he murmured. Yu Tangchun frowned.
“So what now?” he asked. Zhan Junbai shook his head.
“I’m not sure. I don’t really know where to go from here” he admitted before he looked at Yu Tangchun.
“All I know is that I want you to be safe and healthy. And not in Jing City, where your life might be in danger” he explained. Yu Tangchun huffed.
“Aren’t you the one behind all of the death that’s been happening in Jing City?” he asked. Zhan Junbai chuckled.
“You’re a clever one, aren’t you?” he asked. Yu Tangchun sighed.
“I have been planning my revenge for a while…unfortunately a wrench kind of got thrown into that plan” he grumbled. Zhan Junbai raised an eyebrow.
“Oh?” he asked. Yu Tangchun sighed.
“Growing quite comfortable in your company…feeling safe here. Even though this whole time you were my parents killer” he explained. Zhan Junbai raised his eyebrow again.
“Are you telling me you have feelings for me, Fu Cheng?” he asked. Yu Tangchun huffed.
“Don’t you have feelings for me, Zhan Junbai?” he replied. The two men stared at each other before Zhan Junbai chuckled.
“Ah, so you’re not just a pretty face and a pretty voice. You’re quite dangerous when you want to be” he murmured. Yu Tangchun smirked before he crossed his arms.
“What are you going to do about your uncle?” he asked. Zhan Junbai looked at him and raised an eyebrow.
“Do you have something in mind?” he replied. Yu Tangchun sighed.
“Unfortunately you got rid of my sesame cakes that I was going to give to your uncle so I am all out of the pills that Yuzhi gave me” he explained. Zhan Junbai frowned.
“Pills?” he asked. Yu Tangchun nodded.
“I had asked for some pills that if you overdosed on them, you would die quietly in your sleep. I had ground them up and slipped them into the flour to make the cakes. You never gave them to your uncle and probably discarded them, so all my hard work went down the drain” he explained. Zhan Junbai huffed.
“It’s a good thing I didn’t try the cakes then” he murmured. Yu Tangchun smirked.
“You wouldn’t have been able to eat them anyways, since you can’t eat sesame” he reminded. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“True” he agreed before he sighed.
“My uncle is a very cautious man; he won’t just eat anything without someone else eating it first” he explained. Yu Tangchun hummed.
“Does he have a sensitive nose?” he asked. Zhan Junbai frowned.
“What do you mean?” he replied. Yu Tangchun sighed.
“Well, you could always poison his wine or tea. If he doesn’t have a sensitive nose, then it should be an easy assassination” he explained. Zhan Junbai frowned.
“But won’t the police suspect me? I was his nephew, after all” he explained. Yu Tangchun shook his head.
“Remember, Zhao Moqing is his “wife”. They could easily place the blame on her, if they found motive that she wanted him dead” he explained. Zhan Junbai looked at him awe before he shook his head.
“Where have you been all my life?” he breathed. Yu Tangchun looked at him before he smiled slightly.
“Trying to kill you” he replied. Zhan Junbai laughed and Yu Tangchun couldn’t help but smile as well. They really did make a good pair, especially when talking about killing Zhan Junbai’s uncle. Zhan Junbai then let out a sigh and shook his head.
“While I like your plans, Fu Cheng, I would prefer to keep him alive. For my plan” he explained. Yu Tangchun frowned.
“Your plan?” he repeated. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“Yes…pin him as “San Ye”” he declared. Yu Tangchun frowned.
“But won’t Jiang Yuelou suspect something?” he asked. Zhan Junbai shrugged.
“Maybe. But he is looking to crack down on the opium in Jing City and my uncle wants to take over Jing City so…it’s the perfect solution” he explained. Yu Tangchun’s frown deepened.
“But didn’t you want Jing City under your power? Isn’t that why you’re doing all these horrible things?” he asked softly. Zhan Junbai looked at him, his eyes soft, and shook his head.
“Not anymore” he replied. Yu Tangchun blushed slightly before he sighed.
“So, let me get this straight: you’re going to claim that your uncle is “San Ye” and was pulling the strings and making you do all these terrible things in Jing City and Jiang Yuelou is going to fall for that and arrest him while you—” he started, looking at Zhan Junbai for the last part of the plan.
“Run away with you” Zhan Junbai answered. Yu Tangchun blinked.
“What?” he breathed. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“Run away with me, Fu Cheng. We can start a new life together, somewhere where my uncle can never find us. We’ll be safe. We’ll be free” he breathed. Yu Tangchun bit his lip; the idea was tempting.
“But…what about Zining?” he asked. Zhan Junbai smiled.
“She can come with us” he replied. Yu Tangchun looked at him before he sighed heavily.
“You’re making it very difficult for me to want to kill you, Zhan Junbai” he murmured. Zhan Junbai chuckled.
“You haven’t made me stop calling you “Fu Cheng” so I think your plans of revenge are dissipating” he replied. Yu Tangchun blinked in surprise; Zhan Junbai was right, he hadn’t stopped him from calling him “Fu Cheng”. He…actually liked the way his real name came out of Zhan Junbai’s mouth.
“So, what do you say, Fu Cheng?” Zhan Junbai asked, shaking Yu Tangchun out of his thoughts and making him look over at him.
“What do I say about what?” he asked. Zhan Junbai smirked.
“Run away with me” he repeated. Yu Tangchun looked at him before he sighed.
“I will…only if you promise that Zining can come with us” he replied. Zhan Junbai smiled before he leaned forward, pressing a gentle kiss to the side of Yu Tangchun’s head.
“Deal” he agreed. Yu Tangchun blushed as Zhan Junbai smiled fondly before he lowered him back down into the bed.
“You need to rest. We need your stiches to heal before we leave” he explained. Yu Tangchun nodded as he let his eyes slip shut, Zhan Junbai gently brushing his bangs out of his face before he stood up, a look of determination in his eyes. He would take care of his uncle and then run away with Yu Tangchun and Zining. He could start over without his uncle hanging over his head. An evil smile slowly grew on his lips and he laughed softly.
“Watch out, uncle” he whispered before he slipped out of Yu Tangchun’s room, letting the man sleep.
~*~*~*~*~
Over the next couple of weeks, while Zhan Junbai worked on pinning Zhan Tianqing as “San Ye”, Yu Tangchun worked on recovering, making sure that he could use shoulder to its full capacity without straining it too much. Chen Yuzhi also showed up from time to time to help with the rehabilitation process and during those secession when he was there, Yu Tangchun would let slip what Zhan Junbai was doing so that Chen Yuzhi could report back to Jiang Yuelou and have Jiang Yuelou deal with Zhan Tianqing. After one of their rehabilitation secessions, Chen Yuzhi looked at Yu Tangchun with worry in his eyes.
“Are you sure about this? Isn’t this the man you’ve wanted revenge on for so long?” he asked softly. Yu Tangchun looked at him and smiled.
“I’m sure. Even monster’s hearts can change you know, Yuzhi” he explained. Chen Yuzhi sighed.
“I suppose. But do you know that he’s going to protect you and look after you? It’s one thing to say it but it’s another thing to do it” he explained. Yu Tangchun chuckled.
“He didn’t kill me when he learned my real identity and he’s willing to take down his uncle so that he can run away with me. I think his actions are speaking pretty loud and clear” he explained. Chen Yuzhi frowned.
“But don’t you think this is one of his traps? One of his tricks? We know he’s San Ye and yet—” he started when Yu Tangchun shook his head.
“No, I don’t think so. I genuinely think he wants to be out from under his uncle’s thumb and this is the only way to do it without outright killing him” he explained. Chen Yuzhi looked at him before he sighed and nodded.
“Alright. Just…just be careful” he murmured. Yu Tangchun chuckled softly as he looked into Chen Yuzhi’s eyes.
“You might think I’m crazy, Yuzhi, but…this is the safest I’ve felt in a long time” he admitted. Chen Yuzhi looked at him in surprise before he chuckled.
“I’ll admit, Executive Zhan has certainly changed since the two of you have become close” he admitted. Yu Tangchun smiled.
“See? A monster’s heart can change” he murmured. Chen Yuzhi smiled and nodded before he stood up from his chair.
“I’ll come back next week to check on your shoulder and make sure it’s okay” he stated. Yu Tangchun nodded as Chen Yuzhi headed for the door, opening it before stepping out. He then shut the door behind him and headed downstairs where Zhan Junbai was waiting.
“Dr. Chen” Zhan Junbai called out, making Chen Yuzhi look over at him.
“Yes Executive Zhan?” he replied. Zhan Junbai walked over to him and stood before him.
“How is he?” he asked. Chen Yuzhi smiled and nodded.
“He’s recovering nicely. In a week or so, the stitches can come out and then he’ll need maybe another week of healing” he explained. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“I see. Thank you” he thanked. Chen Yuzhi nodded before he turned and headed towards the door, only to pause and look back at him.
“Executive Zhan” he called out, making Zhan Junbai turn and look at him.
“Yes?” he answered. Chen Yuzhi looked at him and his eyes were dark, a serious expression on his face.
“I expect you to keep your promise to Boss Yu and protect him and Zining because if you break that promise, there is nowhere on this earth that you can hide from Jiang Yuelou and I. We will hunt you down” he warned. Zhan Junbai blinked in surprise before he nodded.
“I understand, Dr. Chen” he replied. Chen Yuzhi nodded.
“Good” he growled before he turned and walked out the door. Zhan Junbai stared after him as he left before he huffed and shook his head.
“No wonder Jiang-xiong loves him. He’s just as terrifying as he is” he murmured.
~*~*~*~*~
Over the next few weeks, Zhan Junbai’s plans came to fruition and Zhan Tianqing’s plans to take over the city slowly crumbled until one day, Jiang Yuelou and the Jing City Police stormed into Zhan Tianqing’s home and arrested him for all the crimes he had committed against Jing City. While he was being arrested, meanwhile, down by the docks, two tall men, one dressed in a white suit and one dressed in a maroon suit, and one young woman dressed in a simple cheongsam were walking towards a departing boat, suitcases in each of their hands. The man in the white suit and the man in the maroon suit looked over at each other, both of them smiling fondly at each other. Getting out of Jing City was the best thing for the both of them; they could start over, create new identities for themselves, and leave their pasts behind. And for Yu Tangchun and Zhan Junbai together with Zining…that’s all they ever wanted.
Can I ask for a Yu and Junbai fanfiction? With "Tending wounds/sickness", where Junbai hurt, something that doesn't require a doctor and Yu patch him up. Thank you
Hey! I hope you like this! I always wanted to write about Yu Tangchun singing Zhan Junbai to sleep, so this was a nice chance to write that!
Zhan Junbai had never felt a headache like this before in his life. It was a terrible pounding behind his eyes and every time he stared at words or paperwork, the words would swim and blur, making his headache even worse. No matter how much water he drank, the headache would still not go away. After about half a day at the office with the awful headache, he couldn’t handle it anymore and ordered one of his men to take him home. As he sat in the backseat of the car, he let his eyes shut and leaned his head back, hoping that some rest would hopefully make the headache go away.
~*~*~*~*~
When he returned to the mansion and the driver woke him from his rest, he found that the headache was not only not gone but it was worse.
“Fuck” he whispered to himself as he stepped out of the car and headed inside, Qiu Ming immediately at his side.
“Sir, are you alright? You look awful” he murmured. Zhan Junbai shook his head.
“It’s just a headache. Make me some tea” he instructed. Qiu Ming nodded and headed off to the kitchen as Zhan Junbai walked over to his chair and sat down, placing his head in his hand.
“You don’t look so good, Executive Zhan” a gentle voice called out, making Zhan Junbai look up to see Yu Tangchun walking down from the second floor, looking ethereal as usual. Yu Tangchun then walked over and stood before him, a gentle smile on his face.
“Is something the matter?” he asked. Zhan Junbai stared at him and felt his vision blurring, causing him to shake his head.
“Nothing. I’m fine” he replied. Yu Tangchun tsked softly and shook his head as he stepped forward, leaning down to look at Zhan Junbai’s face, causing the older man to jolt back in surprise.
“Boss Yu” he breathed. Yu Tangchun smiled.
“Sorry. But you look exhausted. Have you been sleeping well recently?” he asked. Zhan Junbai looked at the young man before he sighed and shook his head.
“No” he admitted. Yu Tangchun hummed before he reached out and gently touched Zhan Junbai’s forehead, startling him again.
“Boss Yu” he hissed as Yu Tangchun placed the back of his hand to his forehead before he sighed.
“No wonder you don’t feel well, Executive Zhan. You have a fever” he declared. Zhan Junbai blinked in surprise.
“Fever?” he repeated. Yu Tangchun nodded.
“You haven’t been sleeping well, right? A lack of sleep can bring on things like fevers because your body is trying to re-regulate itself. You need rest” he declared. Zhan Junbai groaned.
“But I have so much work to do” he murmured. Yu Tangchun raised an eyebrow.
“Don’t you have subordinates at work? Let them take care of it. You don’t have to do everything yourself, you know” he stated. Zhan Junbai made a face, causing Yu Tangchun sigh.
“If you don’t trust your subordinates to do it, then you need to at least rest so you can do it yourself” he instructed as he held out his hand. Zhan Junbai frowned and looked up at him in confusion but he just smiled sweetly and motioned to his hand.
“Come Executive Zhan” he murmured. Zhan Junbai’s frown deepened before he sighed and reached out, taking Yu Tangchun’s hand. He then allowed himself to be guided up to his bedroom, where the young opera singer led him over to his bed and sat him down.
“You can change later, Executive Zhan, but for now, just take off your shoes” he instructed. Zhan Junbai did as he was told and took off his shoes before he slipped under the covers, letting out a heavy sigh.
“I’ll get a cool towel” Yu Tangchun murmured as he slipped away and headed to the door, opening it quietly before he headed downstairs. He soon returned, Qiu Ming following behind with a tea tray. Qiu Ming then set the tray down and bowed before he turned and left, leaving Zhan Junbai in Yu Tangchun’s care. Yu Tangchun then walked over to the tray and picked up the cool damn towel before turning back, placing the towel over Zhan Junbai’s forehead.
“This should help to bring down the fever” he murmured. Zhan Junbai hummed, barely registering Yu Tangchun’s words. Yu Tangchun looked down at him and smiled softly, shaking his head before he turned and headed out of the room, heading towards his bedroom. He then walked over to his desk and opened it, pulling out the brown bottle of pills that Chen Yuzhi had given him for when he had last been sick. He shook a pill out into his hand, quickly putting the bottle back into the drawer before he turned and headed back to Zhan Junbai’s bedroom, where the man was almost, but not quite, asleep. He smiled softly again as he walked over to the man, sitting down on the edge of the bed as he reached out, gently shaking Zhan Junbai’s wrist.
“Executive Zhan” he murmured. Zhan Junbai cracked open a tired eye, looking up at him with barely conscious recognition.
“Tangchun” he whispered. Yu Tangchun’s heart fluttered at how Zhan Junbai called his name, but he just cleared his throat as he held out his hand, revealing the pill.
“You need to take this. It’ll lower your fever” he murmured. Zhan Junbai nodded and slowly sat up, weakly holding out his hand. Yu Tangchun placed the pill in his larger hand and watched as he quickly popped the pill and dry swallowed.
“Junbai, you need to drink water with that. Taking pills without water isn’t good for you” he explained softly before he stood up and walked over to the tray, picking up the cup of tea that Qiu Ming made. He then turned and handed the cup to Zhan Junbai, who took it and nearly chugged the cooling tea before letting out a pained groan. Yu Tangchun took the cup from him and placed it on the bedside table before he reached out and placed a gentle hand on his shoulder.
“Junbai, get some rest, okay” he murmured. Zhan Junbai nodded and slowly lowered himself back down into his sheets, Yu Tangchun tucking him in like he was a little child. Yu Tangchun then took a step back and watched as Zhan Junbai’s breathing began to slow and soon his chest was rising up and down at a regular pace, signaling that he was asleep. Once he was asleep, Yu Tangchun softly cleared his throat before he took a deep breath and began to sing. He had been living in the Zhan Mansion for a while and Zhan Junbai was so kind to him so the least that he could do was sing for the man to hopefully help him sleep a little better.
~*~*~*~*~
The next morning, Zhan Junbai awoke to find that while his body was a bit achy and his skin felt sticky, his head was no longer pounding and he definitely felt a lot better. As he slowly sat up, he looked over to find Yu Tangchun fast asleep in a chair beside his bed, his head hanging in what looked like an uncomfortable position.
‘Did he stay here all night?’ he thought to himself before he remembered that he heard something that sounded like singing in his dreams. His eyes widened in shock.
‘Was he singing to me the whole night?’ he wondered as he slowly slipped out from under the covers and walked over to Yu Tangchun, kneeling before him.
“Tangchun. Tangchun” he whispered, placing a gentle hand on the opera singer’s knee. Yu Tangchun let out a soft hum as he slowly opened his eyes and lifted his head, only to nearly jump out of his skin when he saw Zhan Junbai kneeling before him.
“Executive Zhan!” he exclaimed before he blushed in embarrassment.
“Did I fall asleep? I’m sorry, I meant to continue singing but my voice needed to rest and I was feeling a bit tired so I thought I could just rest my eyes for a few minutes, I didn’t realize—” he started when Zhan Junbai moved his hand from his knee and reached out, gently taking his hand.
“Tangchun” he interrupted, stopping Yu Tangchun in his rambling. Zhan Junbai then smiled fondly.
“Thank you” he whispered. Yu Tangchun smiled.
“Are you feeling better?” he asked. Zhan Junbai nodded.
“Much” he answered. Yu Tangchun grinned.
“Good. I don’t like seeing you in pain like that” he admitted. Zhan Junbai blinked in surprise before he huffed.
“I’m sorry to make you worry. But I feel better now. Thank you” he thanked. Yu Tangchun nodded as Zhan Junbai stood to his feet, still holding his hand.
“If you’re feeling up to it, would you like to take tea with me in the gardens?” he asked. Yu Tangchun smiled.
“I would love to” he replied as he stood to his feet as well. As they headed out of Zhan Junbai’s bedroom and downstairs towards the gardens, Zhan Junbai looked over at Yu Tangchun and smiled fondly. He was grateful to have the opera singer by his side and he hoped…he hoped that he would stay there. Forever.
