“Hmmm? Oh. Fine. Just...worried about Audrey.” She understood her daughter’s need to go off. To find out who she was outside of their family. But that didn’t mean she didn’t wonder every day where she was, what she was doing. “She took Storm and Tansy with her and I know...know they would never let anything happen to her.” Just as Reed had watched over Preston during his time away. “I just wish she’d call is all.”

“    no    –    ”    hic!    “    –    nothing!    ”    feeling    lighter    than    air,    audrey    floats    through    her    room,    the    weight    of    the    world    finally    off    her    shoulders.    with    a    giggle    and    a    grin,    she    spins    around    the    room,    a    secret    treasure    in    hand    –––   a    bottle    of    absolem,    a    birthday    gift    she    had    been    keeping    stashed    in    a    shoe    box    underneath    her    bed.    pressing    her    lips    to    the    bottle,    she    tilts    her    head    back,    the    liquid    almost    too    sweet    as    it    slips    past    her    lips    and    down    her    throat.    the    more    she    drinks,    the    more    her    center    of    gravity    dissolves,    leaving    her    swaying    back    and    forth    like    a    ship    on    the    sea.    she    tries    to    set    the    bottle    down,    but    her    grace    has    left    her    as    well.    vision    multiplied    by    two,    she    underestimates    the    distance    between    her    hand    and    the    bedside    table.    as    she    tries    to    the    set    the    bottle    down,    her    knuckles    hit    her    rose    colored    lamp,    sending    it    clattering    to    the    floor.    

“    oopsie!    ”    she    whispers    to    herself   before   grinning   and   breaking    out    into    laughter    at    the    word.    abandoning    the    bottle,    she    goes    to    pick    the    lamp    up,    not    noticing    that    the    bottle    teeters    on    the    edge    of    the    table.    once    her    fingers    leave    the    glass,    the    bottle    topples    over,    liquid    spilling    out    onto    her    white    carpet,    staining    it    violet    immediately.    “    oh    no,    ”    the    words    slur    together.    audrey    drops    to    her    knees,    cupping    her    hand    in    a    poor    attempt    to    scoop    the    liquid    back    into    the    bottle.    in    a    lapse    of    judgment    and    a    moment    of    desperation,    she    puts    her    lips    to    the    puddle,    slurping    at    the    liquid    that    hasn’t    fully    sunk    in    yet.    it’s    a    good    thing    she    won’t    remember    this,    but    the    ugly    purplish    blemish    would    be    a    reminder    enough.

high,  hysterical  laughter  dulls  to  a  miniscule  glimmer  in  her  eyes  as  she  shuts  the  door  behind  her.  glancing  down  at  her  phone  and  pressing  the  side  button,  she  refrains  from  sighing  at  her  grandmother’s  penchant  for  punctuality.  “  it’s  only  ten  minutes  after  curfew.  it’s  not  a  big  deal.  ”  scoffing,  audrey  sets  her  purse  down  on  the  table.  by  the  look  in  grammy’s  eyes,  that  answer  wouldn’t  do.  “  dinner  with  chad  and  ben  ran  a  little  late.  sorry,  ”  audrey  grumbles,  cowering  under  the  woman’s  gaze. her  apology  sounds  as  if  it’s  hassle  to  make,  rather  than  a  genuine  admission  of  guilt.   “  it  won’t  happen  again.  ”
