nina had given no signs that she was tired of her. she left the way she came unexpected. silent. an aura of mystery surrounding the circumstances. the morning audrey woke to find her gone, nina left no answers on the nightstand only questions in the mirror. why did she go? where had she gone? what had she done?
calls went unanswered. texts unread. it was as if nina never existed. yet audrey knew she did. nina existed in the gaping wound in what was left of a loving heart. pieces of her name only existed between the hours of two and five am, tangled with strangled sobs, gasps of air and salty tears. though nina wanted her to forget, her absence only made her more present.
audrey never learned to live completely without nina. she merely learned to ignore the streets that shouted her name. she went through the motions, took it day by day. put together the finishing touches of her business that she had been putting off in exchange to bathing in love and tossing around in sheets. so, the last place she expected nina to show up was her launch party. the last thing she expected her to do was take a night that was about her accomplishments and make it about nina’s disappointments. stealing the show was her thing.
when you love someone and they leave, the ache never goes away. with only ten words, nina takes audrey’s heart and wrings it, stops the blood from flowing into her brain, the oxygen into her lungs. all she ever wanted was for her to come back, but now that she was here it was almost too painful to look at her. “ i never said that you weren’t? ” it wasn’t a good enough reason. “ when did i ever say that? ”
