Two tourists were rushed to hospital after losing control of an ATV earlier this afternoon in Surfside.
The two young women were apparently riding together on a quad as part of a tour and lost control near the first bridge from Flamingo, sending both flying over the handlebars.
According to witnesses, one landed in the water and the other may have been crushed under the ATV. Both were taken away by ambulance; nothing as yet is known about their identities.
[UPDATED | 4:43pm: One of the injured suffered a broken collarbone and the other, a broken wrist and ribs. Neither injured their spinal cord.]
The incident is one of a string of injuries and fatalities involving the controversial ATV tours, which have residents complaining about noise and disruption, in addition to the dangers of lax security regulations, alcohol consumption (including tour guides) and illegal trespass on local beaches.
The latter may sound exciting to some but can cause significant damage delicate turtle nests buried in the sand.
In 2009, a 12-year-old tourist fell to her death when her ATV went off the road in the Flamingo hills during a tour by an unlicensed operator.
