"Not even for a quickie, baby?" Figgins interrupted, his stomach falling in disappointment at the thought of going yet another month without seeing his beautiful girlfriend. "You can say that I'm just a backstage crew-member."
She sighs, the sound crackling down the phone. "I'm sorry, Figgy dear, but I just can't risk this getting out! You don't know what it might do for my career."
"What," Figgins asked, his voice breaking a little bit at the pain of her rejection, "being open about being in love? What harm could that do?"
"My entire reputation could go up in flames! I'm already getting questions about who my next arm-candy will be--the only way I'll stay in the public eye is if I'm dating the newest bit of sweet hotness and getting into scandals every few weeks." He can hear the sound of a door opening and closing in the background, a sharp voice calling his beloved's name and he knows, his heart hurting, that they have bare seconds left.
"I love you," he chokes out, covering his face with his hand so as to avoid the curious stares of the students passing his office. "I love you so much, baby."
He can hear the smile in her voice as she replies, "I know, Figgy-wiggy, and I love you too. I'll text you tonight from my secret phone, okay?"
"Okay," he agrees, voice little more than a sob. He manages to pull himself together just enough to scowl at that Hummel kid as he passes by, Hummel's arm linked with his annoying brat of a boyfriend. "I'll see you." 'Or not,' lingers in the air as he sets down his phone and wills himself not to break down into a flood of ugly tears.
