RESULTS: Pre-Tournament Qualifications

The results are in from our pre-tournament qualifications!

The winner of the Utah qualifications was the Arches design! It handily trounced the Greatest Snow on Earth design, gaining 90% of the vote to Snow's 10%. United We Stand didn't even make it out the gate.

Meanwhile, the New Mexico plates put up a bit more of a fight. The yellow design came in last with 7% of the vote—a weak showing, but better than Greatest Snow on Earth's bellyflop. Chile Capital of the World's bold black-and-yellow design and red-and-green peppers certainly made an impact, garnering 35% of the vote. Still, this wasn't enough to beat the teal design, which beat the competition with 57% of the vote, an absolute majority. Congratulations to the teal team!

Now that our contestants are finalized, we will begin the official tournament! Polls will open on a staggered schedule beginning Wednesday, November 29 at 8:00am PST, and each poll will stay open for a week. I am very pissed

I went to Monaco to see the qualification round and when I tell you that people there love Max Verstappen more than CHARLES!!!!!!I am not kidding okay. I saw his face like a 100 times on the poster, I saw an image of Charles once on the back of a bus!!!!And I did not see on freaking Ferrai suporrter only Red Bull and once in a while Mercedes.Like what the actuall F**k!!!

Die Qualifikation

Die Bewerbungsfrist zur Teilnahme an der Qualifikation zur Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 1974 endete am 30. Juni 1971. Die Auslosung der Qualifikationsgruppen fand am 17. Juli 1971 in Düsseldorf statt. Von 99 gemeldeten Nationen waren zwei direkt für die Endrunde qualifiziert. Nachdem sieben Mannschaften ihre Teilnahme zurückgezogen hatten, nahmen schließlich 90 an der Qualifikation teil. Neben dem amtierenden Weltmeister Brasilien und Gastgeber BR Deutschland, die automatisch zur Teilnahme am Turnier berechtigt waren, konnten sich 14 weitere Mannschaften für die WM-Endrunde qualifizieren.

Überraschend dabei war insbesondere das Ausscheiden Englands gegen Polen, womit bei der Weltmeisterschaft 1974 ein früherer Weltmeister fehlte. Zum wiederholten Male setzte sich auch Bulgarien durch, diesmal gegen Portugal, dessen große Zeit und die von Eusébio endgültig vorbei war. Etwas unerwartet schied in der Qualifikation auch Spanien gegen Jugoslawien aus und Mexiko belegte in der Qualifikationsrunde hinter Haiti und Trinidad und Tobago nur den dritten Platz. Neben den Fußballern der Karibikinsel schafften erstmals auch die DDR, Australien und Zaire, als erste schwarzafrikanische Mannschaft überhaupt, die Qualifikation.

Während die Sieger der restlichen Qualifikationsgruppen direkt für die Weltmeisterschaft qualifiziert waren, musste die Sowjetunion als Erster der Europagruppe 9 in zwei Play-off-Spielen um die Teilnahme an der WM-Endrunde gegen Chile, den Sieger der Südamerika-Gruppe 3, antreten. Im ersten Spiel in Moskau trennten sich beide mit 0:0. Zum Rückspiel in Chile trat die Sowjetunion nicht an, da das Spiel im Stadion von Santiago de Chile, in dem während des Militärputsches im September 1973 Oppositionelle inhaftiert worden waren, durchgeführt werden sollte. Trotzdem wurde das Spiel angepfiffen, jedoch nach dem 1:0 abgebrochen, da mangels anwesender sowjetischer Spieler kein Wiederanstoß möglich war.
