Quality Start

The last few practices had been, for lack of a better word, uneventful.  Just settling into a routine, learning the basics, and getting comfortable with the sport.  Most of all, though, it was Adam learning how to handle the boys and them learning how to handle him in turn.  Now, a few weeks later, he was much more comfortable than he had been at the first practice, much looser in speech and action and actually having an idea of how (and how not) to talk to kids.  That was not to say he was any less hard on them, or any gentler with them.  That hadn't changed much at all; rather, it was just a fact of learning that he wasn't doing it to hurt their feelings, but was instead trying to help them do their best.  He had never been one to pad his words, and old habits were hard to break.  If any of his players were still bothered by the way Adam spoke to them, none of them had mentioned it to him, and neither had their parents (which he was more concerned about).  They worked hard, played hard, and generally just were boys--occasionally, he would join them with a joke or a laugh, some good-natured teasing or a few not so hidden smiles.  And to top things off, he even knew their names--most of the time.

This practice was different, though.  It was the last practice they were going to have before their first game.  He wouldn't run them as hard today, since they wouldn't have as much time.  A lot of the time was going to be devoted to going over how the games would work, when they should show up and what they needed to bring.  What they could and couldn't wear.  Adam still hadn't set up when the first players started trickling under the pavilion he had commandeered, still unsure whether or not they were even going to use it.  But that in itself wasn't anything new, he was hardly ever ready by the time the first kids showed up.  Sure, he showed up early and he was organized enough, but he could never quite make up his mind until he actually talked to the team and gauged their mood, and he was never one to do something unless he knew he absolutely had to do it.

For a few minutes he chatted with his team and the parents who felt like sticking around, making polite conversation and listening while some of the boys all tried to talk over each other while talking at him.  Eventually he found an excuse to shuffle off to the side, going through his papers to find the schedules he'd forgotten to give out when he got them two practices ago, along with all the other information he needed to throw at his group today.  Every so often he glanced up, scanning the growing number of faces and mentally going down his roster even while he tripped over some of the names.  He'd get them down eventually, for sure.  As it was, he didn't mess up too poorly.  Sam was the kid who needed a haircut.  Ryan was the one with the bitchy mom who tried not to look at too much.  Jack was the one whose cleats were always untied.  Sean was one of the four who rode their bikes to practices, but Adam still couldn't tell him apart from the other three who rode their bikes, too.

He cleared his throat unintentionally, quickly looking up over his clipboard to make sure he hadn't drawn anyone's attention--technically not everyone had shown up yet, and he wasn't particularly feeling the "parent meet and greet" that tended to spring up when he wasn't looking busy.  Among other reasons as far as some of the mothers were involved, Adam never really felt like talking much to the parents because he never knew what to say.  He wasn't a parent, didn't even really like kids (though his team had very quickly grown on him).  The last thing he wanted was to open his mouth and say something to a parent that would spread among the gossipy housewives and leave him teamless.  Besides, some people he just didn't have the patience to deal with.  At least, that was the impression he'd gotten after that first practice--one that he didn't bother to fix but instead fueled with intentional tones and choice comments mumbled under his breath.
