The subject of the history of the rank of Gunnery Sergeant has come up at work a few times over the past couple of months, and I know I'd read something about it in the past. This wasn't the article I read originally, but it is concise and hits the major points in the timeline. I hadn't recalled that this rank only came around in its current iteration during the late 50s.
