I learned that aimer meant to like but I see it translated as love often does it mean to love as well?

Aimer generally means to like but it can be translated as to love when applied to people. 

For example: 

J'aime dormir. = I like to sleep.J'aime jouer du piano. = I like to play piano.J'aime ce jeu. = I like this game. 

Mon petit ami est magnifique, je l'aime. = My boyfriend is magnificent, I love him.

If you want to say that you like a person rather than love them, you can add bien or beaucoup after aimer (so for example, “Je t'aime bien”). There’s a bit of nuance between bien and beaucoup – from what I’ve seen and heard, beaucoup appears to be a little stronger.
