Queering up #YYC
My boyfriend & myself once a month are throwing a party titled: Fudge packer friday’s. Where we DJ and make a safe space for alternative queers to come hang out dress up and do our damn thing.
Miranda who i still DJ with came up with the idea to do a night months ago called “Music we wanna hear, that fuccbois won't play” because we were sick to death of shitty Dj’s(Mostly male) that were treating women like objects and playing the worst music. Calgary’s queer scene is white washed and totally terrible. Going to the one gay club here were the DJ is out of touch with what is current in music and the decor is even worse. the men that go are all seriously scared of anything that does not fit in a box of what a gay man “should” be. most times incredibly homophobic toward not masc male’s that go to have a good time and maybe get laid.
SO we got the idea to make a safe space to get naked play rad music thats more punk/experimental with dashes of obvious top 40 from now and the past to bring a new kind of experience to the city’s non existant alt queer. In addition to focusing on that we also will be doing a queer zine focusing on the artist’s that are the more unknown contenders. Im going back on the photo shoot grid and will be doing two this week which will be covering issues like identity/gender fluidity/race/feminism. I want my work to mean something to me and to the community that i want to see be built.
BOTTOM LINE: put your fucking time in and lets fuck shit up and make great things happen instead of trying to move away from the problem and bitch about it. YOU CAN MAKE ANYTHING HAPPEN AND KNOW THAT I BELIEVE IN YOU TO DO IT AS MUCH AS I WILL TRY TO BELIEVE IN ME. xx
