I just finished Tanya Huff‘s THE SILVERED. It pulled me in and pulled me along to the very end.
Understandably I highly recommend it. Available in Kindle, Audiobook, Hardcover.

Life in the Commonwealth of Sutherland is far from content.

[Free eBook REPEAT] A Symphony of Storms by Robert E. Vardeman [Epic Quest Fantasy]
A Symphony of Storms by Robert E. Vardeman, a 1972 Hugo Award finalist for Best Fan Writer, in addition to being an author in his own right, is the 3rd novel in his The Demon Crown trilogy of epic adventure quest fantasy, free again for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press' Venture imprint.

This story follows the aftermath of two such restoration quests, which have yielded a corrupted king and then his potential replacement twin, who seems to be a suitable queen but whose beginning reign is plagued by treachery and civil war from her ousted brother-king's faction, leading to the third and final quest for the aid of a legendary wizard to help save the realm.

Revenge: book two of the Saga of Loralil Greyfox
***
After a pleasant half hour Loralil slipped into the old shirt she used for sleeping in and lay down on the softest bed she had slept in for three months. She was soon asleep and for a while she slept peacefully, but it didn’t last. As the dream unfolded she was brought back to the final day of her village. She saw the slaughter and lived through the rape and the worst yet she saw her parents die again. She awoke with a shudder, drenched in sweat. It was always the same reliving that day each time she tried to sleep without taking something. Why must she dream the same dream every time? She had not dreamed the whole time she was a slave in the arena. Going to bed exhausted every night made sure of that and if it didn’t she had access to powerful intoxicants. She had gotten a taste for them while she was working at Mistress Terry’s establishment. There she had to dull her mind. She knew it was not wise then, but as long as she could perform what was required the Mistress did not care.
But ever since her uncle had freed her she had been suffering from daily nightmares. She was as used to them as could be expected and her uncle no longer knew that she suffered from them. When they were in Mer’Beyrl, the healers had worked up a potion to allow her to rest, but had recommended she only use it when she really needed to. They were worried she would get addicted and rightly so.
She had stopped using it and had gotten to the point where she could live on very little sleep. It was a good thing that as an elf grew older they didn’t need to rest as much. Loralil figured she was just going to start a little earlier than the rest. She knew deep inside that the only way to stop those dreams was to do just what she was doing.
Tomorrow morning she would go into town and get the information she needed if she had to beat it out of the hides of those who had it. In fact she looked forward to beating those beings with in an inch of their lives. Loralil knew that it was wrong to use her training and arena born strength against others without a good cause, but she was going to get that information and if she got a bit of revenge at the same time well so what?
It was wrong she knew, but she needed to feel that she was in charge of her destiny. She sat up when she noticed sounds coming from the bathing room. Her uncle must be washing up. When he was done she would go inside and rinse off the sweat and then dress for an evening of human music.

Mika pulled out his flashiest costume for an evening in his good friends’ taproom. He knew very well that Samis always had the best entertainment. At different times in the past Samis had managed to have bards to entertain along with the best of the street musicians. There were even times when he set up the courtyard for the traveling players to put on their plays and skits. He had told Mika that last month during the warmer weather he had a troop of dancers practicing before they were to perform at the ducal palace. Yet another reason why this small inn could command the higher costs than its neighbors.
Tonight’s performer was supposed to be one of the best of the human harpists. She sang songs from peoples that he had never even heard of. He hoped that Loralil would stay to listen. He knew that she loved music, but whenever Elven music was played she would simply leave the room. She could not bear to hear the music of her people, it reminded her too much of her mother.
Maybe someday she could be convinced to go back to the training of her musical talent. The way things were going he sincerely doubted it would happen. It saddened him that her gift was going to waste. He had sat outside the chamber when his friend Terrell had convinced her to take lessons. She had a pure voice and a talent for catchy tunes that would serve her well anywhere, but Mer’Beyrl. It was obvious that his sister had taught her well.
As he finished dressing he could hear Loralil in the bathing room. She was getting cleaned up for the evening, which was a good sign. She must plan on going down stairs. He had caught her soft moans from the nightmares she suffered from. Though he knew she thought he had not noticed he knew that she was still suffering them. She needed something to distract her from the memories.
He waited until he was sure she had enough time to get dressed and then went and tapped on the connecting door. She opened it and stepped back with a shy smile. Mika glided inside and was pleased and surprised to see that she had donned one of the gowns he had made up when they were living in Mer’Beyrl. “You look lovely my dear. I hadn’t thought you brought any of the gowns with you when you left the city.”
“I decided that I might need one. I take it that the time for dinner is upon us.” She curtsied to her uncle with a twinkle in her eye. It was a game that they used to play when she first came to the city. Mika was glad to see his niece at ease.
