Escape rooms
In our more recent adventures to Riga, we discovered a fascinating and fun attraction that we had never even imagined before. Games called ‘escape rooms’ (or exit rooms, or quest rooms) are quite popular in some parts of Europe. Particularly in Riga, which we learned on the boat over.
A team of two to four people are placed in a locked room full of objects and clues. They have one hour to complete a series of puzzles in order to find keys and codes to locks and ultimately escape from the room. Without going into any specifics, there is code breaking, pattern finding, looking for small hidden objects, and mirror based puzzles. I’ve played games that are similar to them online before, where your character awakens in a room and must piece clues together to make their escape, but the real life version is an entirely different and exhilarating experience.
We played three rooms total so far, all with their own fun and novel theme. The first (and only one we could finish in time) was pirate themed, where we searched for locked treasure and keys corrosponding to the points of a compass. The second was a small bunker, where we had to diffuse a bomb before it exploded before making our final escape. And the third was Saw (as in the movies) themed, where we began in a run down bathroom with locked chains strapped to our legs.
These escape rooms were all fun and unique experiences and we deeply recommend them to anyone who would love a thrilling themed puzzle game. Don’t get too stressed about losing, as that is all part of the thrill and challange. Plus, the staff are all wonderfully nice and will provide hints throughout the game of you get stuck, and will show you the answers and workings of the rooms should your time run out.
I grew up spending nights in this room, and never rightfully appreciated it until now.
