Uhtred’s head flopped onto the pillow as he looked at Alfred. then he snorted and couldn’t help as he erupted into full-blown peals of laughter, which shook his body and the mattress beneath the two of them.

“you have,” Uhtred agreed, grinning as he turned onto his stomach, taking Alfred’s hand so he could press a kiss to it. “in both drink and hump, and have overdone both. welcome to the heathen life, Lord.” for all his words seemed dire, his tone was light and teasing, and he leaned forward to kiss the heated skin of Alfred’s neck. he gently bit down, not enough to mark but certainly enough to feel. then he murmured, “let’s sin some more.”

the second his feet landed on the island, gabe dashed straight for the closest bar. his agenda mainly consisted of one thing: getting drunk as much as possible. shots are consistently filling his vision as the glasses are downed in a blink of an eye. however, he does notice a familiar figure through his peripheral vision and a grin surfaces onto his face. taking a spare shot of tequila, he walks over to the girl and holds it out for her. ‘ hey, ’ gabriel greets, his tone a bit slurred from the amount of liquor in his system, ‘ you done being pissy at me or what ? ’

Uhtred trailed his lips down the curve of Alfred’s neck, pausing at the spot right below Alfred’s ear. one hand was pressed against the ridges of Alfred’s ribs; the other was braced beside Alfred’s head against the wall. smiling against Alfred’s skin, Uhtred murmured, “because I’m a heathen, or because doing this with me turns you into one?”

“as much as a man misses a flea,” Uhtred said, arching a brow. “I thought I’d been rid of a pest forever. alas, here you stand.” still, he smiled to soften the words. he was relieved. he’d lost Leofric in the heat of the battle; had feared him lost to the gods — or heaven, whatever — and so it soothed a fear deep in Uhtred’s heart.

climbing to his exhausted feet, Uhtred leaned out an arm and grasped Leofric by the shoulder, expression soft. “I did fear you’d proven useless with a sword after all.”

“I will stop treating you like a child when you stop acting like one!” Uhtred snapped. “until then, you remain under my thumb where I can watch you! what were you thinking, hm? you are neither trained nor experienced enough to join a shield wall, much less against Irishmen!” much less without me there to protect you, much less without at least telling Sigtryggr so he could watch out for you, much less without proper armor, much less without proper sword, much less without being on the furthermost lines, much less without —

the list was endless. for as much as Stiorra had Gisela’s beauty, she had inherited all of his personality. faced with the sudden reflection of his pride, Uhtred wondered how he hadn’t been strangled by foe or friend yet.

“Stiorra,” he tried again, exhaling so his tone was calmer. “you must have known this was foolish. you may be a Dane, but you haven’t yet learned to fight as one. if you want to be a shieldmaiden, fine — I cannot stop you. but I will give you the best chance you have to survive, whether you want it or not.”

you already have, Uhtred ached to say, the words caught behind his teeth. he could have meant any number of things that Alfred had taken from him, could have meant his freedom or his Danish life or his only remaining family now locked in the Winchester dungeon, but it was none of those. he couldn’t put a name to what Alfred had taken — not even to himself, too afraid to learn the words that would be associated with it.

a coward’s move, but the only one Uhtred could make — for his sanity and his heart and that gaping, missing chunk that Alfred had carved out. that Alfred now possessed.

“and what part?” Uhtred asked instead, folding his arms across his chest. “I have nothing for you to take. I have lost everything.”
