𝕄𝔸ℝ𝕀𝔸ℕ𝔾𝔼𝕃 ℙ𝔼ℕ𝔸 — CHARACTER TROPES
SELFIE FIEND: a selfie fiend is a character who is always taking selfies of themself. They’re usually female and usually a teenager or 20-something year old.
GIRL NEXT DOOR: the girl next door is a stock character (often as a potential Love Interest for the male protagonist) who is open, approachable, and unassuming: the girl he thinks of as his best friend, his childhood pal, even just One of the Boys. she’ll usually embody a “wholesome” sort of femininity, so she’s rarely the promiscuous sort, though she might act as a foil to a woman who is. she will always be easy to talk to and usually a good listener.
POM POM GIRL: the pom-pom girl is a stock sharacter and often truth in television. though she does not always carry pom-poms and is not always female, the image of a perky dancer with pom-poms and the chants they tend to inspire are recognizable enough that they often appear outside of the intended cheerleading role.
OBLIVIOUS TO LOVE: expect alice to say things like “i wish there were someone out there for me” and bob to respond with “he might be closer than you think.” of course, she’ll think he’s being vaguely hopeful rather than literal. in the worst cases, alice may be actively looking for someone (in general or particular) and just be completely blind to other people’s feelings for her, or even already seeing someone (let’s call him charlie), charlie may or may not be the right guy for her, but that’s secondary to her being oblivious to bob trying very hard to get her attention.
TEAM MOM: in an ensemble show, especially of the fighting kind, there needs to be someone to hold this ragtag bunch of misfits together before they kill each other or wander off into the woods like so many player characters. the team mom basically acts as the mother figure for everyone else in the group, regardless of age or family relations.
ALL LOVING HERO: this character, simply put, loves everyone. loves them with a deep, spiritual love that means they will shake heaven and earth, destroy gods and planets, bring nations to their knees, etc. for the person they just met yesterday. they will believe the best of everyone, and constantly give someone a second chance (though they will defeat the Big Bad). They repay cruelty with kindness and anger with calm.
GO-GETTER GIRL: a young woman who devotes herself to achievements other than homemaking above everything else. the reasons for this might vary: she may have some personal goal she feels she needs to accomplish, she may be desperately seeking the approval of others, or she may simply enjoy competing against her peers and taking the number one rank. in any case, she’s well aware of the effort that her path requires, but she’s more than up to the challenge. she finds it easy, or at least manageable, to discipline herself to avoid distractions, and while others might complain about the expectations of superiors, she will do whatever she can to meet and exceed them.
FLOWER IN HER HAIR: flowers have long been a symbol of femininity, and therefore young women (and those who are young at heart) sometimes wear them in their hair.
THE MATCHMAKER: this person is notable for several things. one, they can’t seem to grasp the concept of personal space. two, they seem to have a pathological obsession with hooking up their friends.
