what does "bigger than the world" mean? sorry if this is potentially triggering, I just want to know what to tag for you!
it means what it means. an object whose physical size is bigger than the earth
I don't know if you've heard of it, but there's thing called the "Vans Custom Culture Contest" where high school art classes design shoes. One of the design categories is "art" and i think it would be really interesting to create a design based on other culture's art styles (Indian, Chinese, etc.) but I'm worried it could be interpreted as a bastardization of culture. What's your opinion?
Basing a design on a culture is not necessarily a bastardization of culture. What is a bastardization (cultural appropriation) is taking some aspect of a culture and using it as a design crutch.
Basing a design on a certain culture's art style is not necessarily bad. For example, I'm making shoes and I'm planning to use Southeast Asian influences. I'd stick to one striking style - Maybe the clean, bold strokes of Japanese art, or the detail of Korean art. Maybe a mix. Then I could say that I had Southeast Asian influences. "Here I decided to imitate Japanese Ukiyo-e art. Sharaku's pieces were a huge influence."
But imagine I decided to be lazy. Imagine I painted, on a pair of chucks, a few ghost-white, slit-eyed women in long flower-print dresses posing with armored samurai boldly brandishing katanas while slaying a Lung dragon. Then i said it was "oriental". Aside from being extremely ugly design-wise, it's a bastardization of several Southeast Asian cultures by selectively taking bits and pieces to suit my needs."I made an oriental pair of shoes."
Basically, if you respect the source culture by saying it was inspired by it ("I was inspired by the richness of Chinese culture...","This piece is Filipino-inspired") rather than actually being part of the culture ("I made a Japanese pair of shoes","this one is a Korean pair...") then you're good to go.
I might be wrong, feel free to correct me.
I could probably turn this blog into a satire blog and I'd still gain followers because of those three posts
