Quick Talk - If You Don't Read, Don't Bother Zawe
Quick Talk is at The Lawns in Kololo to find out the Ugandan in Zawe Ashton, a British born actress with Ugandan roots. Zawe was here for her granny's 80th birthday.
[Laughs. Zawe has this deep laugh]. Yes.
When do you plan to have a kid?
Not any time soon. I am happy in my relationship and happy with my work.
Are you born an actress or do you develop the talent along the way?
I think it is something you are born with. You need to be tenacious, you need to have thick skin. You need to be open but at the same time really strong. You need to be vulnerable and strong at the same time.
This movie [Blitz] with Jason Statham. So what's up, do you fall for the guy in the movie?
No, no, it's pretty an old movie now. We play cops in London. And my character is a cop with a past of drug addiction, and he is someone that is catching the serial killer in the film. And he manages to pick her up after her spiralling out of control.
Brad Pitt or Denzel Washington, who would you rather have dinner with?
[She takes a deep breath like she was waiting for such a question all her life.] Well, I was at the BAFTAs [British Academy of Film and Television Arts] only a week ago, and Brad Pitt was there. And I have to say in person wow with a capital W.O.W
[laughs. That deep laugh]. Denzel Washington, for me, is such a wonderful actor and he's so charming, and his offstage persona is incredible. So, maybe I can have the main course with Denzel and then dessert with Brad Pitt.
What do you think of our MP Ken Lukyamuzi?
I am keeping all political questions off.
Who is your kind of guy: a well chiselled body or a lean guy?
Someone who reads. If I come to your house and there is no book there, I can't connect. [There you go, all you pretenders flocking the gyms]
Which team do you support?
Ah, so Arsene Wenger should be fired, as some fans demand?
I withhold my comment. I think when you are a brilliant team, you are going to go off the boil. It's part of being brilliant.
So, Wenger should be fired.
How often do you go to the disco?
It's mostly work. I don't have time. Or if I do go out I just want it to be with friends, or my boyfriend or traveling.
Where would you love to have your honeymoon?
I think my boyfriend would have to come here before marriage...[huh sighs]...I have never been to Brazil, I have always wanted to go to Brazil. But if he came to Uganda, I think he would say Zanzibar. [Quick Talk thinks hard, and with a reflection of his high school geography, remembers that Zanzibar is actually not in Uganda.]
But we have Kalangala...it's a beautiful place.
Really? Well, I will take the recommendations.
How much time do you spend on Facebook?
I am more on Twitter now. [Read: I'm into serious stuff than those lousy Facebook updates about you having a blast at your cheap local pub last night.]
What would you rather wear for a night out: hot tight pants or short skirts?
Neither. [She pronounces neither in a deep, shocking tone...like how could I even suggest such outfits. Clearly she is not a Kampala girl.] I think I am more of a tomboy.
Ah, so you are into baggy jeans.
Not baggy. No, no, no, no. That's for the nineties. Anything that feels comfortable. Nothing that is too revealing.
How often do you go to church?
You know it's funny. I have been wanting to go back to church. Not regularly, but it is always on my list of things to do. Actually, I went to church with Jjajja on Sunday. That was really nice.
