“honestly? it’s been long overdue.” that was said with pride, and he gently squeezed her hand, his gaze not leaving hers. “and well-deserved.” one hand reached her cheek, his thumb gently brushing over the fading golden lily tattoo on her skin. he’d longed for this - for sydney to quit letting this mark - this institution define her when she could be so much more.

“so, rome - huh? will there be a room for a starving artist in this scenario? i mean, i can totally sell art on the street.”

       “whoa, was my cooking really that bad?” but his good-natured jest died out as he recognised that painful agitation in her eyes. he was quick to push off the chair, aiming to hold her close - but was that even the best thing to do? he felt inequipped - never really dealt with a panic attack before - and so he warily pulled a chair and gestured for her to take a seat, green eyes searching her gaze, “you’ll be okay, look at me.”

there weren’t a lot that she told him about reeducation, mainly because of the traumatic stress that it brought even just by recollection, but he vaguely remembered that forced vomiting was one of the torturous methods they inflicted on her - which could’ve been triggered right now.

“hey, sage. just look at me. i’m sorry, i’m so sorry,” this time, his hands cupped her cheeks, fingers swatting the hair that curtained her eyes. “breathe, sage. you’re here with me. you’re safe. you’re home.”
