I think part of the issue with something like BookTok [or Tumblr] is that we are hearing everyone's opinion. Not everyone reads the same way, and we are all forced into each other's timelines against our will. It means we are often having to confront opinions in ways we don't want to be challenged. I never like to think of myself as an elitist, but I've had a sort've come-to-Hera moment and accepted that on a certain level... I am an elitist. I thought that loving Space Jam, and Sucker Punch, and Rent, would prevent this condition from taking hold over me, but... I read Anne of Green Gables at a very young age and I don't think there's any hope for me. I have a Janus Film tote bag, I love a Criterion sale, I can sit through a three hour movie without needing an intermission, I don't even hum along to musicals anymore when I watch them because I think it's bad theatre etiquette. I'm a ✨pretentious bitch ✨ That doesn't mean I can't appreciate fun! ... I enjoy fun things, and I am the first person the need to scroll when someone doesn't like something I like. But, critics exist for a reason.

In a letter, we can deliver a thousand volts of passion, without faltering, and without danger. We write letters because they are more potent than verbal declarations. A letter can be the best expression of our love and admiration because it is a considered thing, and time spent on a love letter allows refinement towards perfection. We write letters because they allow the reader to have their own unwitnessed reaction, to think about what is offered, and to reply in their own time. We write letters because they last, even when the love that inspired them has gone, leaving little other trace. We also write letters because someone wants them. This is partly because we are all insecure. We cannot hear often enough that we are loved, or tell the loved one about the delight we take in them. We can scarcely believe our luck.
