So I was wondering, how does a person get into the Persona universe? Where to start? What is needed? Everything is confusing
I’m glad you’re asking friend! This is a very good question and I can understand that you don’t know where to start. This is gonna get a bit long so…
So first, when it comes to Persona games, there are, for now, 4 main ones. (With a bunch of P4 related games too, since this one got the most popularity thanks to the animation)
If you just want to get a gist of the plot and characters for P3 and P4, you can watch the P3 movie Spring of Birth (this is the only one that is available and subbed at the moment) and the P4 anime but you will miss a lot of stuff, so you really should also play the games if you can.
I can’t really tell you much about Persona 1 and 2 since I haven’t played those yet, but here’s what you need to know about P3 and P4 :
There are three versions of P3 : Persona 3, Persona 3 FES and Persona 3 Portable. The first two are on the Ps2 and the latter is on the Psp.
When it comes to differences, P3 FES is better than plain old P3 since they added a lot of things, including a brand new scenario for one of the characters.
In P3 Portable you can choose to play as the heroine, so this gives you a new point of view, (and other potential romantic partners) I think they also kept what was added in P3 FES but they removed the anime cutscenes which is a shame. Also before you could walk from one place to another, in P3P it’s a point and click system instead I believe.
As for P4, you have two versions : the original one on the Ps2 and Persona 4 Golden for the Vita. I was lamenting for the longest time because P4 Golden got A LOT of added content and I wanted to play it so bad gosh.
For example you get : new costumes, a new social link, bonus scenes, lots of battle costumes, a new character, additional elements of gameplay, alternate endings, etc.
But if you can’t get it it’s okay! Persona 4 is already very good as it is.
So yeah, I highly recommend you play the games, you don’t have to do them in order btw, (they both have their own story) but that’s what I did and I think it’s better this way.
I hope I managed to answer your question, I know it can seem kinda complicated but it’s really not. :)
Ps : Oh and I almost forgot to mention Persona Q on the 3DS! This one is very recent, and is heavily inspired by the Etrian Odyssey saga, a well known dungeon crawler. To be honest, I’m not a big fan of those kinds of RPG’s because there’s often too much grinding required and not enough plot but! For one you can choose the difficulty level, (thank the gods) and from what i’ve seen the plot is very decent and most importantly it’s like fanservice paradise because the P3 and P4 casts get to meet! It’s been a great experience so far.
