REGULUS BLACK • TWENTY-ONE • FC: DUDLEY O’SHAUGHNESSY

BACKSTORY:

[ Trigger Warnings: Death, Mutilation. ]

( by all accounts, you really should have died– ) Regulus was a quiet child, a shadow. Not forgotten, but never quite at the forefront of anyone’s mind. A child you saw out of the corner of your eye. Sirius was loud, burning bright like the star he was named after; Regulus was not. It didn’t matter, much. They looked up to their big brother. Their hero. There role model. Their king.And everything Sirius did sent one message: second best isn’t good enough. And so Regulus didn’t want to be second best anymore. They fell in with the right crowd by pure chance. Voldemort’s lot. It seemed like the right thing to do, the sane thing to do. Why wouldn’t you side with the man who was going to control death? Sharp, quick, and with a brilliant tactical mind, Regulus did well, always did well. So young, people would say, so young, and they would grin that quiet grin like they had a secret. Training was simple, training was effortless even when it was grueling and brutal and would have driven them to their wits end. They rose quickly in the ranks, were placed on a project to help eradicate any survivors. And then one day, they did the impossible: they found survivors. They were out on patrol with two others – friends – when they saw a small group of Protectors. Finally, it was what they’d been looking for the whole time. Burke, on rear guard, didn’t see them. Flint did. But what Regulus saw was Sirius. There was a little girl with them. Maybe a survivor they’d just found. Maybe an orphan. Maybe immune. Maybe they were saving her. Maybe Sirius was saving her. And Flint shot her straight in the head. So Regulus shot Flint and shouted for the Protectors to run. Burke came running when she heard the gunshot. She didn’t see the Protectors. She just saw Regulus, with their gun aimed at Flint’s dead body. There wasn’t a trial. Regulus became an example for the others; this is what happens when you turn against me, look how even the highest, even the brightest can fall. So young… Their tongue was cut out. So proud… They were cast out to fend for themself. To die. So they found the Protectors. Found the Underground. Found Sirius. Found Albus Dumbledore and, voiceless and helpless, laid their life in his hands.Let me help you, they wrote on a scrap of paper. I have information. Let me help you. And so the second round of training begun.
