I have a question regarding revisions and querying agents. One of the agents I sent a query to liked the full MS enough to give me feedback and suggestions, and said she would be open to seeing a revised text. I thought her ideas were spot on, and made the changes. Now it's as done as i can make it, so the next step is to send it back to her. What is the proper etiquette for such an endeavor? Do I send her a new query, or pick up from where we left off? Thank you for your input.
Most authors have sent me a new query in this situation, but personally I see no reason not to pick up where you left off if the agent was clear about their interest in seeing a revision. If they really wanted it, they’ll be excited to see the new version, and using the same email thread helps refresh their memory and keep all correspondence in one place. If you’re still unsure, here’s a very loose recommendation: if it’s been less than a year and/or they seemed exceptionally friendly or interested in the work, reply to the thread. If it’s been over a year and/or they seemed more formal than friendly, send a fresh query.
But regardless of whether you choose to start a new email or reply to an old one, be sure to state clearly that the agent requested the revision, and the extent of your changes, especially if based on their comments. If the changes are substantial enough to have changed the plot significantly, a new query pitch is also a good idea.
