I don't understand why this has so many notes and I have seen it on my dash a few times. I'm finally just tired of it.
I don't understand why the degradation of those with special needs and learning disabilities is a joke.
I don't understand why a beautiful little child with Down syndrome or Autism or any other disorder needs to hear people throw around this word.
Would it be better if it was a "nigger" seal? Or a "spic" seal? Or a "gay" seal? Would that be acceptable for you to use then?
No. It wouldn't. Because those are hurtful terms that no one uses any more.
Then why is it okay to use the r-word in such a context? What makes that any different for you to make fun of those children and adults with special needs?
That remote control isn't "retarded" just because you hit the wrong button while changing the channels. The garbage can that you knocked over with your car isn't "retarded" just because you have to get out and pick it back up. Your friend isn't acting like a "retard" just because he tripped over his shoelace. There are so many other words in the English language that I'm sure you can use in those contexts. Words that won't demean fellow human beings.
I'm not expecting every single person in the world to stop using the r-word - as much as I wish that I would happen. I just ask that you think about the word and what it means. Not only are you demeaning those with special needs, you're hurting their families and those that love them.
Stop and think - would you like it if someone used that word against you? No? Then don't use it.
