After reading my last post about dholak,some friend asked me to tell them more about Udaykumar Dube.
Dubeji as we call him is old friend of mine.Together we have played hundredd of songs.He was assistant to music director G.S.Kohli who was assistant to O.P.Nayyar. As a independent music director he gave music to film Lambe Hath, Char Darvesh and some other films but he got real fame from film Shikari.All songs of this f.c. Mehara film were very popular. Film made good business because of music.
Remember the songs"Mangi hai duvaye hamne sanam", "Chaman ke fulbhi tuzko gulab kahte hai", "Tumko piya dil diya kitne naazse", "Ye rangin mahefil", Agar mai puchhu, jawab doge". All were hit song.Dubeji and Kalu become close friends. Kohali was called Kalu by his friends. Dont know why he was called Kalu as he has fair skin. Once Kalu took Dubeji to Nayyarsahab's home. Nayyarsahab liked his playing and he become permanent sitting member till his last film. Dubeji once told me a funny story. When Kohli signed Shikari, he wanted Lataji as singer while Nayyarsahab was totally against using her voice in his own films. Kohali knew about Nayyarsahab's dislike for Lataji. He was worried but Dubeji advice him to not tell Nayyarsahab till they had talk with Lataji.They phoned her and she called them at her home after two days.
Now Lataji and Ashaji's flats are next to each other and there is a door in between. Lataji welcomed them, offered tea and asked him to sing, wrote song in her diary, had him sing two more time and Ashaji entered the flat..Kohali,s worst fear came true.In the lift he was praying" god let Ashaji not see me here. Ashaji was surprised. What Nayyar sahabs assistance doing here ! She left. Lataji promised to attend recording on given date. After coming on the road Kohli said my days with Nayyarsahab are over. They went in hotel and got drunk.
Next day nervously they went for sitting. Ashaji already had told Nayyarsahab but the gentleman did not say anything. Dubeji has many interesting stories about Nayyarsahab too. After Nayyarsahab he joined Chitragupt. He was very close to him. When Chitragupt's two son Anand Milind become music director, he become rhythm arranger with them. Once Uttamsing recorded a track for Gulamali.Both went to Pakistan to record it there but due to some reason could not record it there so came back to India along with Gulamali and recorded it at film centre.He was always with Uttamsing in every recording.
He was called for R.D.Burman's recording. For many years he played R.D. and S.D. both. Today many of his students are working in film industry. We are still in touch with each other and remembering old memory of golden era.
