West Side Story (1961)

If you can’t tell by my blog, I love musicals. I’ve seen WSS many a time and every time it is just as good as the previous. I love attempting to sing along to the songs and attempting to dance along to ‘America’.

The story line is a classic Romeo and Juliet, two people from rival gangs (Jets vs Sharks, White Americans vs Puerto Ricans ) fall in love but the rival gang thing causes a bit of an issue. Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer portray the leading lovers perfectly without overshadowing the talented ensemble. Marni Nixon the unsung (hehe) talent of the film did all of Wood’s singing for her luckily for our ears.

A classic well known musical which transferred well to the screen - I thoroughly enjoyed it and will watch again!

3x09, A Deep Fried Korean Thanksgiving (2002): While in a confrontation with Dean, Jess says that their feud is “too West Side Story.”   JESS: It’s getting a little West Side Story here, Dean, and I gotta warn you, my dancing skills are not up to snuff. DEAN: But now’s your chance, there’s no one else around. JESS: Go home. Cool off.

6x09 The Prodigal Daughter Returns (2005): Lorelai calls Luke “Bernardo” and Sookie calls Jackson “Riff” when the two men begin to argue. JACKSON: It takes twice as long. LUKE: You got someplace to be? (takes out another plate) JACKSON: No, you just go right ahead and rub those sticks together. I’ll just go learn a language or something. LORELAI: (to Luke) Bernardo. SOOKIE: (to Jackson) Riff.

A Year in the Life: Spring (2016) In the bathroom scene in an argument with Francie, Paris says, “Take a powder, Baby John.” PARIS: Oh you’ve been spying on me, cyber stalking me, how do you know all this? FRANCIE: You invited me on linked in! PARIS: Yeah right. Take a powder Baby John, this is our turf.

Rosemary’s Baby (1968)

The first time watching this film and I enjoyed it. I don’t tend to watch horror or psychological thrillers but as I’m doing the gg list I put it on.

Rosemary’s Baby is about a young couple who move into a new weird apartment with weird af neighbours. Rosemary (Mia Farrow) wants a baby and her husband Guy (John Cassavetes) eventually obliges with the help of some suspicious chocolate mousse and their elderly neighbours (Ruth Gordon and Sidney Blackmer).

Rosemary gets pregnant and then descends into a paranoid (rightfully so) spiral of confusion and despair and a fixation on the safety of her unborn child.

The film builds suspense subtly the whole way through and culminates in the last 10 minutes. I’ve given it only 3 stars because although enjoyable I felt it a little slow at the start and although classified as horror, it was only scary in the last 10/15mins. The final part of the film was the best because I felt confused along with Rosemary, was she just being paranoid or was what she thought really true.

Overall, enjoyable and would watch again. Interesting that I happened to watch it on a date with 3 sixes in…

For the first gg movie I’m impressed. On to Mommie Dearest next!

1x01, Pilot (2000) : Rory first properly interacts with Dean, and comments on his presence.  RORY: God! You’re like Ruth Gordon just standing there with a tannis root. Make a noise. DEAN: Rosemary’s Baby. RORY: Yeah. 

1x08, Love and War and Snow (2000): Lorelai uses “having Satan’s baby” as a reason for being late to Friday night dinners. This is the second reference to this movie in the series.  LORELAI: Hey, sweets. I have a locksmith coming to the house today like five-ish, and I don’t know how long it’ll take, so will you tell Grandma and Grandpa that I’m gonna be late, and that I’m having Satan’s baby. You pick the order. 

2x12, Richard in Stars Hollow (2002): Rory suggests renting it for a Ruth Gordon trilogy.  RORY: Ooh, we could do a Ruth Gordon film festival. Harold and Maude, Rosemary’s Baby, and that really great episode of Taxi.
