Here are some frivolous cut-outs I made from space-time diagrams belonging to rule 233R. The top, third-from-left specimen, for example, comes from here. It is hard to deny a distinct “biological aroma” to these items, emphasized by my decontextualization but emerging nonetheless from the rule’s simple generative mechanism.

Coloring cells by neighborhood is a useful method for studying the phenomenology of cellular automata. Filtering out some colors helps to uncover the underlying structure of phenomena. Interestingly, there are often multiple “underlying structures” that seem to be in superposition and may be separated from each other by applying the right filters.

Pictured above is a classic “volatile-collapsing” collision between particles in rule 233R under three different color filters. Each one brings out a different structural aspect.
