Quick question for people with rabbits:
Both of my rabbits are going on 7 years old. My male and female were separated for about 1 1/2 - 2 years and living in different households. In that time, I managed to litter train my male rabbit who lived with me and after maybe a week of encouraging him to actually use the pan and not eat it or try to rip it off its locks, he succeeded. He used his litter pan up until I moved the female rabbit back in with us. Note they do have separate cages, so that's not an issue here. I guess he saw that she wasn't using her litter pan (she wasn't properly trained to use it, so not the problem, either) and he stopped using it altogether and they both used their pans as beds for a while. Anyway, I'm 100% done with letting them poop wherever they want (her cage is kind of bad because it only opens from the top and I'm lazy and fat, so trying to clean up the cage KILLS my back.) I've ordered 2 new litter pans and I'm not going to be putting bedding in the entire cage anymore to discourage the "I will poop everywhere else but my toilet!" behavior. And yes, I did put the litter boxes in their popular pooping and urinating spots. Anyway, I see some people use carpeting for the cage floors and I don't have access to anything like that and I'm not entirely sure if I would want it given it's not as easy to clean if there's an accident. Does anyone use something special in the cage the rabbits won't pee/poop on? Our apartment is drafty garbage and even though we run the heat in the winter, I do worry that they might get cold if I leave their cages barren. Maybe I'm just rambling and overly worried or maybe I will make them some little cardboard houses or something to lay in. I just need some rabbit cage on a budget hacks.
