Positioned above the car is the Rockwell-MBB (Messerschmitt Bölkow Blohm) X-31, an experimental fighter jet that was a joint U.S. and German build to test thrust-vectoring technology and "super-maneuverability". By redirecting engine exhaust, it could fly at extreme angles of attack (over 70°) where conventional jets would stall. Only two were built, one of which survives today. Its notoriety was the Enhanced Fighter Maneuverability (EFM) program to test how aircraft can maintain controlled flight well beyond normal aerodynamic limits. It had a General Electric F404-GE-400 turbofan (delivering 16,000 lbf of thrust with afterburner).
