‘Thar’s Gold in Them Hillbillies’
In this analysis of the music industry of (what looks to be) 1938 is a interesting look into how two of the major categories of records — Hillbilly and Race — were thought of in their time. Both groups of music were decidedly not “mainstream” per say, that’s exactly why the artists were never given the privilege of joining the Pop charts. That distinction is made quite clear merely with how the author characterizes and describes the artists and songs that comprise Hillbilly and Race music. A not-so-subtle sense of condescension shines through with phrases like “[Race music] make[s] no sense whatever to the untrained white mind.”
What also struck me as interesting is this notion that, at the time, northern record companies for some reason lacked the conception that people from the south (regardless of their race) are a legitimate market for recorded music. The realization of that fact was then met with more condescension from the executives running the labels.
It’s clear that, at the time, music (or at least good music) was seen by the corporate industry as being predominantly white and educated. Sure, you could sell music to black people and poor people and uneducated people. But such records were of a lower quality, clearly. That’s why, at the end of the article, the author seems to have some apprehension about Hillbilly songs being adapted to the high art of swanky orchestras.
