This video was filmed by 📽🐬☆Bob Fraumeni off Race Rocks in Canada and posted through Cassidy and Megan @sevenseasoffreedom , shared to all of us by Fellow Co-Founder of The Legacy Group, Animal Rights Advocate, Conservationist and Environmentalist, Dear Friend, Kimberly Nicole Forssander @respectanimalrights - Viewing killer whales in the wild will always be a far superior experience to visiting them in barren tanks. Free orcas don’t always “put on a show” but, when they do, it’s because they *choose* to without any form of food motivation or fear. - 🔵Killer whale cows mature at the age of 15 and give birth at very different rates until they are about 40. They average one calf per cow every five years. A female that lived to be over 90 had five or six offspring in her lifetime. Killer whale females seem to experience menopause. For a long time it was thought only human females had menopause. Among resident killer whales, mates are chosen from distantly related pods within their communities in order to avoid inbreeding. As far as anyone knows they don't mate outside their community. This is at least partly for cultural reasons because different communities speak different dialects and have different traditions and customs. Calves can be seven to eight feet long and weigh nearly 400 pounds at birth. They don't sleep their first month of life. Mothers also stay awake and don't begin to take short naps until the forth week after birth. See Dolphins. Calves nurse for as long as three years, the flow of milk only stops when it is determined that the calf is skilled at catching of prey. Older mother killer whales seem to do a better job raising their young than younger inexperienced ones. A study of 30 years of data by Eric Ward of the Northwest Fisheries Science Center in Seattle found that calves born to older mothers had a 10 percent better chance or survival in the crucial first year of life. - #Conservation #Education #Research #OceanOptimism🌊 #OneOcean🌊 #OneLove💙 #OnePlanet🌍 #OneOceanGlobal🌏 #Orca #KillerWhales #RaceRocks #Canada #ThanksButNoTanks #WildAndFree #Breach🐬@oneoceanglobal @oneoceandiving @waterinspired
