Below is the full text of 10-year-old cyclist Rachel Lee’s testimony at today’s L.A. City Council Transportation Committee hearing on Mobility Plan 2035. Lee is pictured above (center) with her father John Lee (right). Rachel Lee received loud and sustained applause for her prescient remarks. She reminded us of another livable streets hero Matty Grossman.
“Hello, my name is Rachel Lee and I’m in 5th grade at Fairburn Elementary. Thank you for the chance to speak today.
I’m here to ask for more bike lanes, not less, and you should not remove them Westwood Boulevard. I live in Westwood, and my family is very active. We love to bike. My dad taught me how to ride a bike on the UCLA campus. It is a way of transportation that gives you a good workout, it’s healthy for you, and it’s fun.
I have collected 200 signatures from children in West L.A. to increase the number of bike lanes. We want more bike lanes and would like to see it start with Westwood Boulevard. By reading about other cities, I learned that you can build bike lanes without losing lanes for cars and without losing parking spaces.
I ask that you add bike lanes and not remove them. I hope you will work to add more bike lanes throughout the city, starting with Westwood Boulevard, so that I can make memories riding my bike to UCLA with my future children. Thank you for your time and for your service to our city.”
