Suddenly, the pain is gone.
Daniel is familiar enough with what’s happening to his body that he knows, if he’s not feeling pain, he must be either dead or close to it. Maybe if he’d been close to some state of the art Federation medical base, they could’ve saved him, but no. He’s out in the middle of nowhere.
In fact, he’d had to hitch a ride on a non-Federation ship (who may or may not have been involved in illegal activities; he didn’t ask) to get here. A system where some rogue researchers had set up a base on an uninhabited moon to study the Borg. They were far away from the Federation on purpose and now that was why he--and everyone else in the facility--wouldn’t survive the accident that had flooded the place with radiation.
He’d rushed in to stop the cascade failure before it destroyed the entire moon and likely the nearby planet, but that’s all he’d managed. The others had died immediately, while he sat in a corner with his back against the wall, waiting.
But he’s not sitting anymore. And there are no floor or walls. No facility or researchers. Maybe there’s no moon either. Only white.
“Hello?” he calls out, feeling foolish for doing so. He’s dead. He’s got to be dead. Is this the afterlife, or the last few neurons in his brain firing off before they blink out entirely? He doesn’t believe in an afterlife, but he can’t shake the feeling that he’s not dead... and he’s not alone. He looks at his hands, then touches his chest. The burns are gone, and he’s wearing the white sweater he wore to the service for Sha’uri. He hasn’t worn it in years. He doesn’t even know where it is.
“Is there someone here? Or am I going to have to talk to myself? I mean, I will, if I have to...”
