Musings on AI
Listened to Radio Lab this morning as it attempted to describe AI in a more comprehendible way.
It comes as zero surprise that Math continues to be the villain.
Very interesting scratch of the surface inspection of what we have coined as AI (which is such a misnomer).
This being said, AI as a search engine is at least applicable and carries less ethical issues for me (minus the conversational aspect). AI as a translator is also something that I support as a helpful tool (with some caveats). AI as a voice replicator for those who are unable to speak or a describer for those not able to visually process is also very exciting to me.
But it's very difficult to separate helpful AI from an assault on creativity and a replacement for humanity in the arts.
It did give me opportunity to think about humanity and experience and how that colors identity and Self. How Self exists in humans cannot exist in generative predictions and mathematical equations. Because "A.I." does not experience.
Experience and mistakes are our input. Self is how we learn to protect ourselves from events that have harmed us in the past. Chatbots and generative technology has no sense of self-protection. Because it doesn't understand its own vulnerability. And it is VERY vulnerable.
Which, I guess, kind of means vulnerability is what it means to be human and to have Self. In a way. I think. Maybe.
the shark week radio lab episodes really make me wanna go down in a shark cage and the description of them soaring above you… i need to experience it
